Phippsburg Maine Vacation

Kingfisher Cove House - a Perfect Maine Getaway on the Water Phippsburg, Maine Vacation Rental by Owner Listing 91036

Location: Phippsburg, Mid-Coast & Islands, Maine, USA (50 miles north of Portland; 5 miles from Bath, nr. Sebasco)

Accommodations:  Two-Story House, 3 Bedrooms + Den, 1.5 Baths (Sleeps 8)

For many years, we have slipped away from the boarding school where we both teach, to spend the summers at Kingfisher Cove House, our beautiful home in mid-coast Maine. ItÕs the perfect place to escape the tourist traffic of the Route One corridor. Now, for the first time, our house is available for rent, both weekly during the summer, and from October to May on a monthly basis.

From the view of the cove that fronts the house, to the hand-made cherry kitchen cabinets, to the exposed beam and wide pine flooring in the open living/dining room, to the cool, slate floor of the den, this house is the perfect place in which to spend a week or more in the summer and fall. We love this place; you will too.

Kingfisher Cove is a tidal inlet that is an arm of the Basin, one of the loveliest spots on the Maine coast. The Basin is a deep-water, protected, salt-water lake connected by an inlet to the mouth of the New Meadows River, on the eastern edge of Casco Bay. It has long been famous as a gunkholeing spot for yachters traveling up the coast.

On an early morning paddle, keep your eyes peeled for seals, bald eagles, herons, egrets, and osprey. The house has 3 bedrooms and 1.5 baths. Including the den, with its futon sofa/bed, there are two double beds, one queen bed, one beautiful antique three-quarter bed, and 1 twin bed. The living/dining room is open, with a view of the cove. There is a mud-room for all your outdoor gear, and a full basement, with washer and dryer.

The kitchen has all the major appliances, including dishwasher and microwave oven. There is basic cable TV, a VCR, DVD player, tape/CD player, and even a piano. Best of all, the house is beautifully clean and well-kept up. The living room opens directly onto a screened porch and attached deck. The summer sun is shaded by oaks and birches and in the summer months there is usually a nice breeze off the water.

For chilly days in the fall, the house is heated with a Monitor vented-kerosene heater, a vented propane wood-style stove, and electric back-up heat in every room. The super-insulated walls keep the house cool in the summer and warm in cooler months.

Located within a private development, the area is peaceful and quiet, but is also very close to all the amenities of the mid-coast. Historic Bath, with the Maine Maritime Museum and numerous antique stores is just 5 miles away, and spectacular Popham Beach State Park and Fort Popham State Historical Site are a quick 20 minutes from the house.

Brunswick, with the Bowdoin Summer Theater and Bowdoin College, and lots of great restaurants, is just 25 minutes from the house. Freeport, with L.L.Bean and other outlet stores is just 10 minutes beyond Brunswick, and even Portland and Camden are less than an hour from the house.

The summer resort of Sebasco Estates, with its excellent restaurants and golf course, is just 10 minutes down the peninsula. Close by are movie theaters, a great bookstore with cafe, a bowling alley, miniature golf and driving range, and lots of excellent eateries. In Bath, Maes Cafe, Kennebec Tavern, Beale Street Barbeque, Solo Bistro, Starlight Cafe, and Creme Cafe are some of our favorites. Near the beach, Spinneys Restaurant offers all kinds of seafood in an informal setting right at Fort Popham.

For those who enjoy the outdoors, you can canoe directly from the house at high tide, hike the Center Pond trails, walk the old road through the Morse Mountain Conservation Area to a secluded beach, bike the back roads of Phippsburg, or fish for stripers either in the Basin itself, or from Popham Beach, one of the premier spots in New England. Stripers over 36 inches can be had, even on a fly.

Come to Maine this summer and enjoy Kingfisher Cove, the perfect place from which to explore the area, or simply spend time relaxing with a book on the deck.
