This beautiful home is just as described. The beach was the nicest I have ever seen with shells and live sea life everywhere. The guys had great surf for their body-surfing and I had miles of non-crowded shoreline to walk. ALL right out the backdoor!! We had a Howler Monkey family greet us almost every morning and the colorful varieties of bird species are unbelievable. Usually I am very busy planning and making all the family arrangements when we go on vacations..whew... NOT this one - Corynne is the Concierge and she is amazing! We told her what we would like to do and next thing we knew everything was arranged. This is the most relaxing vacation I have ever been on thanks to Corynne.Corynne also owns Frijoles Locos Surf and Spa. We took full advantage of the spa with massages/pedicures when we arrived and massages/facials when we left. We rented bikes to cruise around and opted out of vehicle rental which was perfect with plenty of local activities like the Estuary Tour (crocodiles, tons of birds, lizards) - it is a must do adventure. We did the Turtle Tour and saw a 750 lb Leatherback dig her nest and lay eggs - Amazing. We did the Sunset Catamaran cruise which is a lot of fun. There is also a water taxi that can take you over to Tamarindo where you can shop for souvenirs or go to the very nice Auto-Mercado (market). Corynne arranged for a driver to drive us to and from our activities and it was very reasonable priced. The Costa Rican people are genuinely caring and friendly - I was very honored to have such good people serve us while we were there. We had 2 ladies come to the house and cook a meal with the fresh fish and shrimp we bought, the meal was bountiful and amazing. The surrounding restaurants are good. If I had my way I would of had the ladies come everyday and cook (-: While we are on the subject of Food.. Manfred is the property manager and an awesome Chef. He made us a 3 course meal that was unbelievable and fresh baked bread and pastries daily. You will have the vacation of a lifetime here at Casa Baula! Annette, Corynne, Manfred are attentive and take great care to ensure you have an awesome vacation. Thank you for making a lifetime of wonderful memories.

Casa Mambo on Playa Grande is one of the most unique spots in Costa Rica or in Central America. The fact that you are living in a beautiful home on a beach protected for the turtles from tourism, light pollution, and trash is absolutely amazing. You will not find a beach like this anywhere! You get the beauty of a secluded beach, with the availability of Tamarindo nearby. In fact, we only went to Tamarindo once in the ten days we were there. This is a place you want to stay and enjoy. Our ten year olds surfed first thing in the morning and again at sunset every day (they were beginners at the start of the vacation!). We saw turtle hatchlings, heard howler monkeys, and saw more stars than you can imagine. Following Playa Grande we went to La Fortuna for four days, then on to Puerto Viejo for ten days, both made us appreciate Playa Grande that much more. We did not rent a car, but would recommend it for convenience and exploring.

Owner response: Thanks for your awesome review Lori. Especially valuable since you've been traveling Latin America, with your family for 2 months, and have a vast comparison/perspective on surrounding beaches and countries. However, :) we are the CASA BAULA not Casa Mambo!

The 6 of us were in awe upon entering "Casa Baula"....We stayed only 5 nights, before heading north in to Nicaragua. Nothing was as great as Playa Grande! We kept wishing we had stayed longer, to just relax more! The photos you post are true to character...all amenities excellent! House-keeping, gardening...the grounds are so lovely! (loved that out-door shower). Having Corynne assist with "concierge" duties was so helpful (we never did get to meet), but want to thank her for all she did in regards to our questions! Do I dare mention how lucky we were to witness a Leatherback lay her eggs? Shss shush...And of course, our evening with Manfred was too much! How wonderful his meal was! We truly want to return soon...and just stay and relax in this magical home and beach. Thanks so much for sharing!

Wow! Casa Baula is awesome! The house is lovely, private and peaceful, with beautiful art and comfortable furnishings. We enjoyed the cool respite of the living room with wifi and soccer on tv when it was 90 degrees outside. That was one moment we were so glad to have chosen this beautiful house. But the most amazing part is the gorgeous beach just outside the back door, that is nearly empty! Coffee on the beach in the morning and a glass of wine while watching the sunset were highlights of our visit. The hospitable owners put us in touch with everything we needed to finish off the vacation, from surf lessons on the beach behind the house, to zipline adventures, to a guide who took us to uncrowded national parks to see wildlife, waterfalls and volcanoes. We did not even need a car. 3 good restaurants are within easy walking distance. Clean? Oh yeah, the cleaning crew came every other day! A caretaker was available but unobtrusive, for times like when we accidentally set off the house alarm. We felt very safe, secure, and pampered. An iguana kept us company on the roof, and we saw hatchling leatherback turtles on the beach one morning. It is magical, you won't go wrong choosing this one! Trust me, I am picky and scoured the entire Costa Rica inventory before choosing it. We can't wait to go back.

I can't say enough about our experience at Casa Baula ,Playa Grande. The house was great with everything we were expecting and more, beds were great, house was very comfortable. We walked to the nearby Cantara (sp?) Restaurant several times, the food was excellent, that was so convenient! Loved the Rip Jack restaurant also. We wanted a spot that wasn't too crowded yet close enough to town and other activities. This location was perfect. Our older boys went to Tamarindo a couple of times and Brassalito once, had lots of fun. The best part was the beach, right out side our back gate! Great water, awesome waves and no people! Loved it! Our concierge, Corynne, was great also, helped us make some wonderful choices of what to do. She lined us up with Javier Vargas at LovingCostaRica.com, our guide to Palo Verde and more. He was so fun and knowledgeable. We also did a sunset sail and snorkel trip, all good! Manfred's pastries are the best, we wish we had ordered some for the trip home, and he was so helpful when we needed a little assistance returning our car. I could go on and on, but in short, our stay was terrific and I would highly recommend stay at Casa Baula, Playa Grande !

What a truly incredible home and location!!! Our family of four stayed at Casa Baula for a week and was like a 'home away from home' for us because of its inviting, authentic and artistic feel. We have been to Costa Rica many times before and this is the best in terms of it's care, amenities and location. A few steps out of the back seating and dining area is Playa Grande, one of the most beautiful beaches ever. There is surfing, shell seeking and boogie boarding and a wonderful sunset every night. The amenities are over the top...from Manfred's fresh croissants and breads to Corrine at Frijoles Locos for surf, spa and concierge services. The convenience store is a short walk away for any last minute items you may need for meals. The Catarana restaurant is right across the road and offers a truly special dining experience. There are two incredible pizza options close by as well as a wonderful wrap/burrito bar. There are many day trips available but we simply loved the home, the beach and the sunsets! It is truly the most beautiful home on the beach at Playa Grande..which is one of the most magnificent in Costa Rica.

My wife and I and two other couples stayed at this house in June of 2012. It is absolutely amazing. The house is gorgeous with 3 beautiful bedrooms decorated with all kinds of artwork. There is a 'great' room where we spent a lot of time with 20' high ceiling and exposed beams. There is a gourmet kitchen that has everything you would need to cook meals with beautiful granite countertops. The outside porch area has a built in barbecue and large area to lounge in. The backyard leads out to a gate which opens up to a thick canopy of trees and within a few steps you are on a breathtaking beach which most of our stay was totally private and no one around! All activities were within a fairly close drive and they have a personal conceierege that will coordinate everything, she is absolutely amazing and made our trip!! (Thanks Corynne!) I can't say enough about this house and this area, this was probably my 5th time to Costa Rica and definitely the best!! If anything else have dinner with Manfred at his home, , , amazing!

From our first encounter with Javier, at the airport, to our very last day we felt the warm hospitality of the Costa Rican people. Manfred was always there when we needed him and we all looked forward to the days that he brought over his scrumptious croissants, baguettes and muffins. Coryene was full of wonderful information & helped to arrange several of our outings, as well as, THE best massage Mark & I have every had. The highlight of our trip was a boat ride down the Pempisque. River. I don’t think my 18 month old granddaughter will EVER forget seeing a monkey sitting on her Grandma’s shoulders. And none of us will forget the experience of being within 10 feet of the largest crocodile we’ve ever seen. Carol & her mother, Yanera came one night and cooked us a ‘traditional’ Costa Rican meal and joined us for dinner. We spent the 4th of July at Hacienda Pinilla and took day trips to Tamarindo (lunched at Nibbano) and shopped in Quitel for their handmade pottery. Now, Casa Baula... OMG ! Those were the words out of each and everyone of our mouths when we pulled into the courtyard and were greeted by “crabbies” as Jalen would call them. It became our daily ritual to check that Brian or Mark had helped the crabbies out of the outside shower. Your home is, by far, one the the most beautiful locations we have every stayed in. The attention to detail throughout each & every room is amazing. You’ve put such love & creativity into making this truly “a home away from home.” Thank you Dennis and Annette for sharing, Sincerely, Mark, Barbara, Erin, Brian, Jalen and Vera

We stayed at Casa Baula for a week in early April and loved every minute of it. The home was beautifully decorated with ocean and local wildlife inspired motifs, three beautiful bedrooms, a great cook’s kitchen featuring everything you would need to make a great meal. The living spaces were ample, clean, inviting and comfortable indoor and outdoor living rooms. Access to the beach was an easy, private two-minute walk out the back door from the house. Once there, it was clean, private and the sunshine and warm water were so relaxing. Walking the beach at low tide fun as we us collected beautiful shells and ventured down to Tamarindo. Every evening we sat on the beach around 5:00 pm waiting for beautiful sunsets. The local restaurants, only a few minutes drive nearby, plus two within short walking distance were all open air and very good, with fresh fish, local dishes, great drinks and good service. One of the best features of the house was the local concierge who helped with dinner reservations, advice on trips, recommendations on how best to use our time based on our interests and her knowledge of all the offerings in Playa Grande and the surrounding towns. We played a fantastic round of golf at Hacienda Pinella – picture ocean holes, serious pot bunkers, well-protected multi-level greens, gorgeous views, iguanas and native deer. The people in the clubhouse were gracious and very helpful. A big highlight of the week was a trip to Palos Verdes national park where we saw lots of birds, iguanas, crocodiles and native plants. We highly recommend doing this, as an adventure you won’t forget. We’ve recommended the house and the trip to many friends already and hope to return very soon. It’s one of those places you go that’s easy to get to, relaxing and fun. It’s probably the first vacation I’ve taken where I didn’t do so much that I felt like I needed a vacation from my vacation when I returned. Pura vida!

Playa Grande is the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. The water was amazingly warm, with fun but gentle wave. The sand is like sugar with amazing shells. Casa Baula has everything you need to make your stay comfortable. The moment you walk in you feel all of your troubles melt away. It is very safe and secure. We had surf lessons arranged right in front the house one morning thanks to the help of the owners of the local surf shop Corynne and Ian at "Frijoles Locos". They were also able to help us arrange other activities. We also had an amazing dinner cooked for us our last night by a local chef. It was amazing. My three girl friends and I could not have had a better time. I would bring my family back in a second. I highly recommend La Casa Baula. Annette was very helpful with all of the booking details.

Our vacation to Casa Baula was perfect. The VRBO listing is spot on and the Sullivan's made everything so easy. The house was very clean, well appointed and just right for our family of 4. It was especially nice to have such a well stocked, high quality kitchen -- we cooked a large traditional Christmas dinner and had everything we needed. Manfred, the conceirge, was very helpful and delivered fresh baked breads and rolls to our door several times during our stay. There are several very good restaurants within easy walking distance (Cantarana, Bula Bula, and Taco Star down the beach) -- as well as a small but well stocked market for basics. There are several other restaurants and shops within a short drive that are well worth the trip (Rip Jack's, MarBar,Frijoles Locos, etc.) -- without having to go all the way to Tamarindo. The beach is a short walk out the back door and through the mangrove. The water is warm and clear, the sand is soft and the waves are a surfer's dream. You won't find a better beach for quiet morning and sunset walks. There are enough people so you don't feel like you are on a desert island but not so many that you feel cramped or invaded. Keep your eye out and you will see where the leatherback turtles have crawled up the beach to lay their eggs -- and if you are lucky and venture out early in the morning you can watch the babies emerge from the sand and make their way to the sea. Our kids (son 13, daughter 15) loved this Christmas vacation trip. Annette hooked us up with Corynne at Frijoles Locos, one of the local surf shops. She knows all the cool places and things to do. If you tell her what sorts of things you like she will help you coordinate the perfect vacation that mixes adventure with the Pura Vida lifestyle. Everyone we met was friendly and helpful -- and even if your spanish is limited to Hola and Cervesa you will get along just fine. Costa Rica is a great Christmas break vacation spot and Casa Baula is the perfect place to stay.

The most wonderful family vacation we have ever had! The home is charming and comfortable! The decor maintains a beautiful island feel! I loved all the special touches and art work! The house has everything you could possibly need! We especially enjoyed the board games at night. The location could not be better, a few steps to the beautiful beach! Good waves and beautiful sunsets! The restaurants were all fabulous. We especially liked Waltinis and Bula Bula. We enjoyed the excursions of zip-lining, estuary tour, sunset and snorkel cruise. My husband and my sons went deep sea fishing one day and my daughter and I had massages at the house. Life doesn't get any better! The concerige was very helpful! The people of Costa Rica are very friendly and the island is just so beautiful! This is a vacation home I would definitely recommend and I only hope I have the opportunity to go again!!!

We were guests at the Casa in June for 8 nights. My son's dream was to have a private surf beach. I would say this was the place. Playa Grande has to be one of the most spectacular beaches in the world. The surf, the sunsets and the shells! Our family had a wonderful time. The casa is very comfortable, the property is well cared for and is equipped with everything you need. The caretaker is immediately available for any questions or problems. There are some great nearby resturants. Everyone is very friendly. Don't miss the river tour and the croc's! I am thinking of doing a girls trip next...

We just returned from our trip and are already longing to go back. Beautiful house, beautiful beach and a wonderfully helpful concierge made the trip go extremely smooth. Close enough to Tamarindo for the tourist stuff if you want, otherwise you get the seclusion of private Costa Rica. The walk to Bula Bula for their fresh made banana pancakes for breakfast or an afternoon Waltini drink was very convenient. The details in the listing are completely accurate and the house was spotless, definitely one of the best villas in the area and would eagerly stay there again.

The house is both comfortable and charming. It has all the modern amenitites and very tasteful decor. The beds are comfortable and the paintings on the wall made me smile all week long. We were often tempted to spend the day in the house but, with so much to do nearby, we had to split our time. Hours on the beach and in the ocean just steps from our patio, boat rides to Tamarindo, mai tais at Bula Bula bar/restaurant, zipline/horseback riding/waterfall/mudbath excursion, walks to the Taco stand, back to Bula Bula for a mai tai, boogie boarding and surfing, estuary tour and, of course, another mai tai at Bula Bula. The concierge made us feel right at home and the owners 3 ring binder was a valuable source of information regarding local sights, restaurants and activities. If you would like to treat your family to a relaxing vacation stay at this wonderful home in Playa Grande for a week.

"Surf's up" at this lovely beach home right on the most gorgeous beach in Costa Rica. Sleep in and stroll 2 minutes to the amazing surf and wide beach. You won't want to leave! Whether you are a novice/advanced surfer or a shell collector - if you love the beach, you will love this house and location. Six sleep comfortably but you could even use the living room couches for an additional child. The owners are so knowledgeable and gracious - they will recommend everything from day trips to grocery stores and restaurants. They have guides in their library including Spanish translation which I found handy. They really anticipate your needs well.

Owner response: Thanks for the great review Mel. The house is located directly on the beach so you hit the sand the minute you step off the patio. It would be a 2 minute walk if one required a crutch, cane or wheelchair to get through the sand! :-)

The house and property were the best and the service from the caretakers was nothing short of top notch. If you are looking for a great place to go with family or friends and combine the beach with some great tours, snorkeling, hiking and adventure...this hoome and Costa Rica is the place to go! Dennis and Annette (owners) primed us on activities, great places to eat and what to be sure to see and do before we left on our trip and we had a great week in Costa Rica. In Costa Rica the people are always wishing you "Pure Vida" or Pure Life. Staying at this home is the quintessential example of having a Pure Vida vacation. My family had one of the best weeks in our life. The quiet beach in front of the house goes on and on for miles with not a building to be seen. The surf was perfect for my active teenagers. The home was gorgeous, rich with beautiful colors and decorating touches. The owners spare nothing and they think of everything for your comfort including beach chairs with drink holders. We are already talking about going back next summer!

June 2007 - We had a magical two weeks in Playa Grande and the surrounding area!! This fabulous house is a stone's throw from one of the world's most spectacular beaches. We surfed and sailed; went sport fishing, golfing, and zip-lining; enjoyed the local cuisine and people; completely relaxed and reveled in the beauty of yet another breathtaking sunset. Suffice it to say - we can't wait to go back!!

We had a FABULOUS time in Costa Rica, and were lucky to have such a comfortable home to return to every night. The location was great--remote enough to escape the hustle and bustle of Tamarindo, but convenient to several wonderful restaurants and a small grocery. A concierge even met us upon our arrival to help us plan activities for our trip. I highly recommend this property to vacationers who enjoy straying from the beaten path.

Costa Rica and the house are beautiful! We had two families (4 & 4) stay very comfortably at the house! It was so, wonderful to have the ocean just out the backyard! The beaches are beautiful and the house is conveniently located within walking distance to restaurants and a small grocery store.
