Great private outside space in a great location for a stay in Santa Cruz, easily walkable to the beach and the boardwalk but far enough to have a quite retreat. The house has everything you need to make for an affordable vacation getaway. Connie is very responsive, owns your experience, genuinely wants you to enjoy your time in her property. We stayed with our two small kids, which was great. There's a fenced yard which prevents them from running into the street, and once they were down for the night, we had plenty of space to relax without worrying about waking them up. You will need a car or at least bikes to access Trader Joe's, the downtown scene and to get to local/distant attractions like the UCSC arboretum & campus, the nearby Seymour Marine discovery center and Monterrey.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers.

For our summer vacation last year (2011) my mom, sister & her son, and my two kids & I rented the lighthouse cottage. It was perfect! So close to the beach. We walked over and enjoyed the wharf and the boardwalk at night. The neighbors were great and the neighborhood great for a quick morning run. My ten year old daughter thought the rotary telephone was especially cool! Great place, we would definitely stay here again!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

Our family had a wonderful stay in the Lighthouse Cottage. There was plenty of space to spread out and everyone got their own room (so much better and more relaxing than sharing a hotel room). The house was very clean and the beds were extremely comfortable. My son opened his windows at night and could hear the seals "barking"! Each night we walked to the boardwalk and really appreciated being able to leave the car at home. We stayed here for a few days in August on the way between San Francisco & camping at Big Sur on a big trip around California from England. The kids loved Santa Cruz, the boardwalk & beach and we would definately come here again if we're in California. The cottage was a great size for the 5 of us and the courtyard garden was lovely. Best of all for the children, was taking a walk from the cottage around the bay, seeing Dolpins, surfers and sunset ! Property was clean and well-maintained and owner was very helpful, fitting us in between other rentals. We love Santa Cruz !Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with young children.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2003
About the owner: We are a family of two, not counting our animals. My teenage daughter and I love to sneak in days at the beach house so we can get away from the insane pace in Silicon Valley where we live. We try to make the place feel like home to all who visit with us and are open to feedback as to how to improve the experience at Lighthouse Cottage. We enjoy hanging out in the garden to see all that blooms at the different times of the year. We love our neighbors there and being so close to the ocean that sometimes you can hear the sea lions at night if you listen carefully.
Why the Owner Chose Santa Cruz:
Santa Cruz has so many wonderful aspects to it. The ocean and general acceptance of all who come visit are the main draws. The downtown is vibrant with a lot to do there. With the University nearby, there is a level of intellect you don't find in a lot of beach towns. The nature activies are endless, from bike rides, to great hiking to just hanging out at the wharf and people watching and grabbing a fresh seafood dinner. I always feel at peace in Santa Cruz and am never at a loss as to what to do, even though while there I frequently choose to just relax.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our beach house is our second home and is furnished accordingly. There is a new pull out L-sectional sofa from Pottery Barn, quality knives in the kitchen, a gas stove, down comforters on all the beds and more special touches that distinguish it from an impersonal hotel setting. We have books for all ages to read, games, videos and high tech necessities including cable modem and wireless internet connections.
