Enjoy your vacation in the time-honored Wisconsin tradition--UP AT THE LAKE. This family-owned cabin is located on Lake McKinley which is eight miles northwest of Spooner and two hours northeast of Minneapolis/St. Paul.
The cabin has one quarter of a mile of shoreline and 13 acres of heavily wooded land which affords you a degree of privacy seldom found. Situated on point, the cabin overlooks a 105-acre lake (30 feet maximum depth) that provides excellent fishing with northern pike, various panfish, bass and some walleye present. A plus for the younger non-swimmer is the shallow depth at shoreline with gradual increase in depth. No drop offs. A 16-foot fishing boat with 25 hp. motor as well as a canoe, rowboat, and kayak are available.
Warm, honey-colored knotty pine paneling surrounds you as you enter the great room. The decor is rustic but do not let that fool you--all new carpeting, bathroom fixtures, and appliances (even washer and dryer for your convenience) all immaculate. The three bedrooms are all paneled in different versions of pine and the main floor bathroom has a wall history of the cabin. Scoot down the spiral staircase to the family room in the walk-out basement with a Franklin wood stove for those chilly evenings. There is a large bathroom down here for the shower after swimming. A spacious deck on both levels gives you a wonderful view of the lake. Nearby is the small guest house with bunk beds which the kids love.
Plan a canoe trip down the Yellow or Namekagen River, both close at hand. Play golf at the Spooner Country Club or the renowned Voyager Village course, both open to the public. Visit the Tommy Thompson fish hatchery in Spooner, largest in the state and tours are given. Go to the Potter's Shed in Shell Lake and watch them fire Raku pottery or have them glaze your own pot. Hike the trail through the wooded 13 acres surrounding the cabin--you might surprise a deer. Play tennis on the Olympic-sized court right on the property. There is a basketball hoop if HORSE is your game. And, of course, fish and swim.
Great fall hunting (deer, ducks, grouse), leaf viewing, and cranberry picking on the property. Enjoy the fall and winter with a warm cup of coffee overlooking the lake, a warm fire in the lower level, and downhill skiing at Telemark or cross country on Lake McKinley. Snowmobiling and ATV use is easy with many bordering trails. Excellent ice fishing just in front of the cabin.

Owner Description
I'm currently a Professor of Education at Bethel University in Minneapolis, MN. Previous to working at Bethel I served as a fifth grade teacher/principal of a small school just south of Spooner (Brill). During the summer I worked as a muskie guide in the Spooner area.
Now married and with two children, we enjoy spending time at the cabin and in a beachfront casita we recently constructed in Manzanillo, MX.
Why the Owner Chose Spooner
The Lake McKinley Cabin, outside Spooner, Wi., has been in the family for over 45 years. I most appreciate the serenity and peacefulness of our 13 acres with spectacular lake views and 1/4 mile of private shoreline. I helped construct the cabin as a child and the McKinley Lake Cabin is a unique property filled with charm and character.

We loved this vacation. We were sad when it ended and plan to go longer next year! It is a cabin feel with the comforts of home. There is enough fun in and around the cabin and also great places nearby you can go to. We fished, played tennis, had smores, watched movies, and just had a great family time. Thank you again Jay for opening your home to us. See you next fall.

We recently had our annual Mother's and Son's weekend at your cabin. What a treat! We enjoyed the cleanliness of the cabin and all the details inside. Decorated to make you feel at home in the woods but with all those IKEA touches : ) We would recommend this cabin to any family as there are so many things for the kids to explore (especially the trails) and endless views for the adults.

September 5-11, 2009 : My parents, husband, son (19 months), brother and his son (20 months) just spent the week at this wonderful cabin. What a great place to go and have everything at your disposal from all nice pots and pans, utensils, blankets, pillows, life jackets, boats, accessories, tennis court, etc.(too many to name). The weather was beautiful and we caught some nice northern and bass and many pan fish. The cabin history is also something to take in along with the all the unique things that make it up! Close to town, the bait shop, and many other attractions. Definitely will come back again. THANKS AGAIN!!

What a great way to have a family get-together! Our 2 daughters with their husbands, and 1 grandson, along with our son throughly enjoyed a week at this great cabin. Jay has thought of everything in provding a secluded, family-oriented place. Our time in the evenings, after a great day of fishing, will be remembered always. The fishing boat met all our needs, and the rowboat, canoes and kayak were all used to explore the lake.Fishing was great with some large crappies, bass and northern being caught and released. Sunfishing off the dock was fun and provided some "firsts" for our grandson. The tennis court was a bonus and used in the late afternoon. Some spent time biking around the lake. We fished until dark most evenings. The nights were cool so the wood stove on the lower level was "fired up" a couple evenings to take the chill out. Jay provides an abundance of books, games and DVDs for use. We were so busy we only took one evening "off" to go out to eat. Wildlife was abundant and the loons calling was usually the first and last things we heard each day. The lake was so quiet, we felt we were the only ones on it. We all hope to return soon. Thanks Jay!

Jay, This was our fist stay at the cabin and we were 100% satisfied! It's has all the comforts of home; is spotlessly clean, spacious, tastefully decorated and offers a family a chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery & lots of nature-related fun. We had a BLAST here! Thanks for sharing this beautiful slice of the Northwoods with us! Mike & Beth McFarland, WI

Our family of twelve thoroughly enjoyed our stay up at the cabin. The cabin itself was very beautiful with all the gorgeous woodwork throughout. A lot of effort was put into providing extras, making this the nicest vacation home we've stayed in. The lake was so private and we enjoyed all the watercraft provided for us. Jay was great to work with and we highly recommend this spot.

The cabin has a beautiful view, with two full walls of windows looking out onto the lake. The master bedroom has a great lake view and direct TV, in case you get tried of looking at nature! It is well kept and well equipped, with great cookware, comfortable furniture and plenty to read. It is as clean and organized as you will find! It is a family cabin so it feels cozy and welcoming as well. An easy drive from the twin cities yet offers the isolation of a dead end road. Only 10 miles to Spooner, (go the back way on County Road K)which has everything you want in a small town. Great for a intimate getaway or a larger group.

Our stay 8/11/07-8/18/07 was simple amazing! The cabin is absolutely peaceful and cozy, with modern accommodations. The deck was great for BBQ's, playing cards & relaxing by the fire. The view from the cabin is great and the lake is quiet and peaceful. Boat, kayak & canoe were used repeatedly. Tennis courts were used numerous times and there was enough space for all 12 of us to spread out. Bass fishing was great! We caught numerous 18+" bass trolling the bay in the AM & PM. We will definitely come back yearly for the experience. Jay is very prompt responding to questions via email & phone. Definitely a first rate cabin!

The adults really enjoyed eating at Pair 'O Lakes restaurant - excellent fish fry. The Prime was also good as was the Riverbend. Had fun with the canoe and kayak. We all felt very comfortable in the cabin and everything was so nice (the women are all going to IKEA for dishes when we get home). It did not feel as though we were renting. Thank you for providing an "at home" atmosphere.
