My family found this place charming, clean and well-kept. The kitchen is well-equipped, the decorations appropriate for the mountain setting, and the view very beautiful. The property is centrally located -- to the north are the towns of Davis and Thomas, as well as Blackwater Falls State Park, and to the south are Canaan Valley State Park and Dolly Sods, as well as Timberline, for those skiiing in the winter. The place is small enough for one family to feel cozy, yet large enough for two families to comfortably fit. I definitely recommend this property.

Worderful Winter Experience
Worderful Winter Experience
We were overwhelmed with the views and the level of comfort we found in this property. The owner was wonderful when we had some small issues and she helped us correct them very quickly. I would recommend this cottage for anyone who wants privacy, convenience to all Canaan Valley and Davis facilities, and the VIEW! BTW -- the color scheme and decorations are most relaxing and are a cut above what I have experienced in other Canaan properties. We hope to return this summer or next winter to once again enjoy Colleen's little hideaway.

Owner response: Thank you for the nice review. I do think our place has a superior view, and our furnishings and decorations are generally much nicer than one will find in a rental property.
We had a great stay! The house was more than we had hoped for and by the end of our trip nobody wanted to leave. It snowed 9" while we were there and the scene was majestic. Hitting the hot tub after the slopes was incredible. We will definitely come back and stay here again. The owner was more than accommodating in their communication with us. We LOVED the wood burning oven! Kept us warm and toasty the entire time. We never even turned on the flat screen tv because we were having such a great time sitting around the kitchen table eating and playing games. 5*****. Can't wait to come back!

Owner response: Wish we could gurantee such great snow all the time, but Canaan is better than the resorts in PA and MD as far as having much more natural snowfall. Thanks for the nice review.

House was in good condition - adequately furnished, except for linens and towels. However, Hot Tub was very disappointing! Hair and other "debris" was found in tub - which was quite upsetting because that was one of the main features that we were desiring when making our decision to rent this home. I would not recommend renting this home, as when the owners were advised of this situation, they refused to accept any responsibility. With so many beautiful homes to choose from, I would not risk a yearly vacation with the possible disappointment of this one.

Owner response: I will note that this review was posted a year after the person stayed, and no complaint was made to the owner during the rental stay. We strive to maintain an overall well-maintained property, including the hot tub. In the event a renter's stay is lacking, we welcome the feedback in order to improve, and if it is something as serious as noted here, we would like to know about it during the stay so that it can be addressed. All that said, the caretakers have been reminded to keep the hot tub very clean.
We rented the cottage for a long weekend for a group of 8 mostly middle aged motorycle riders, we found the cottage pretty much as described, beds were comfy and there was adequate seating at the table for meals. No major problems, could have done with a few more wine glasses, and it would have been nice to have had some relaxing chairs to sit on while enjoying the view from the deck. But it provided us with a great base from which to explore the surrounding area.

Owner response: Since this review, we have added more seating, including two nice wooden Adirondack chairs on the deck, from where guests can optimally admire the view. Admittedly we do not keep many wine glasses in the property because they tend to break very easily, but guests will find lots and lots of other glasses and mugs.

We had a great vacation. Your cottage was clean and nicely decorated, with all the basics in the kitchen. The view is great, and we cooked on the grill a lot. We especially had fun hiking Dolly Sods and using the hot tub in the evening after wards, and the kids enjoyed the mountain biking in Canaan Valley. Nice to have the pool nearby there, too. I'd highly recommend your place for a family vacation, and for affordability. With the four bedrooms and rec room, you can definitely fit two families that aren't too big. We'll be coming back!

I've rented several places in Canaan Valley through the years, and, overall, I'd say this was the best value. The views of the Valley from out back are really nice, they've done a good job equipping the place and making it comfortable. It's big enough for two families, but not too big for one. The beds were very comfortable. I'll be a repeat renter.

Just so so.
Just so so.
The description of this property I believe was inaccurate in regards to several things. The location is very nice and the view is good. The layout of the house is good and the kitchen is very adequate. I did feel that the house is not being maintained as well as it should be. There were not enough towels and we were told that there were plenty of towels there. Had we known we could have taken some towels. The Hot tub is very nice, but the Hot tub area is in need of some work. When I arrived I swept the area of lots of bugs and cob webs and debri before using the hot tub. The owner told us there was internet service and we were not able to get service at all. We had to go to a nearby coffee shop to get service. This was not so bad, but we should have been told this. The sight said also that soap and that sort of thing was provided, and it wasn't. This could be a very nice property with some minor work. When I stay somewhere on vacation, I like to sleep on a comfortable bed and nice sheets, have clean smelling towels, etc. New, better quality sheets and towels would definitely improve this property a great deal.

Owner response: I appreciated the positive comments regarding the location, view, house layout, and kitchen. I believe the other comments primarily stem from the fact that this renter's stay was marred by the fact that he could not get internet service. Since this review was submitted, we have gotten the same service that the coffee shops in the area use, and we have our connection maintained by locals. It should be noted that since we are in the mountains, there are still times internet service is spotty, but this is true for any internet service in the Valley, including at the coffee shops. We also shared the info from this review with our housekeeper, and have bought new towels and high-quality sheets. We are always happy to hear how we can improve the quality of the stay.
Wonderful house, great location, quiet, but with neighbors close enough just in case. Beautiful home with nice deck, great view, and hot tub. Open layout of kitchen, dining room and living area with wood stove made for a cozy and lazy romantic weekend. Small towns of Davis and Thomas provided just enough of an outing with decent food to keep us happy. All the amenities you could want! Dog friendly too!!! A wonderfully maintained property! We wanted for nothing!

Owner response: I think it is unusual that a property of our quality also permits dogs. We trust our renters to only bring dogs they know will be well-behaved. Thanks for the nice review.
Excellent View of Valley! We spent a lot of time relaxing in the hot tub enjoying the valley. Close to everything. The place looks small from the outside but had more than enough room for our two families on spring break. The cottage was spacious and well kept. The beds were comfortable and the decor made for a perfect setting. The kitchen is setup so you can get groceries and cook most of your meals. Good appliances and plenty of cook/flatware. The only thing we needed was a X-Large pot to make a huge soup in. We plan on making this valley and this cottage a common location for future vacations. Here is a list of things that we did during of stay: Skiing at Timberland, Tubing at Canaan, Horseback riding at Mtn Trail Rides, Ice Skating at Canaan Conf Ctr, Cave hiking at Smokey Hole Caverns, Hiking at Canaan Conf Ctr and Blackwater Falls (we stopped counting deer after 115), Wandered the street of Davis and Thomas (don't miss the Purple Fiddle). All in all a great place to visit and a great place to stay.

Owner response: This review gives a nice round up of things to do in the area. I'd note that we have bought additional pots and pans since this review, and there are now at least two pots in the pantry which are large enough to make a big soup in.
