This was one of the most memorable and enjoyable weeks we have spent in some time. The owners have provided every little detail to make the stay easy and carefree. The location was secluded with eight acres of lawn, trees, flowers and tropical plants. ( Most with labels for identicication). Clean comfortable and affordable with so many extras, like fresh flowers on the table. Off the grid, solar electric was easy to manage and we only ran the generator to do laundry. There was highspeed internet that I used to research our daily sightseeing. Not having TV was a plus, but if we wanted to watch a movie there was a TV DVD player and Stero sound with lots of great DVD's CD's This is really the Old Hawaii, and the Big Island is so different from Ohau and it's crowds and grid lock traffic.Come prepared with food and drink as there is limited shopping and restaurants are close to 40 miutes away. That was fine with us because the kitchen was well equiped for making our own dinners. The location was great for day trips to any part of the island and those days we had dinner out on our way home. Highlights were hiking the many trails at the National Volcano Park and learning the geological history of the island. The drive up the Mauna Kea Volcano Road to 13,796 feet above sea level was great. Tropical rain forest at sea level and snow, ice and lava rock at the summit. Views were fantastic. Road was passable in a regular two wheel drive sedan, however it violates the rental car policy ( your risk ) The air was cool and clear, but rain more likely here than on the west shore, Volcano smoke (VOG) was nonexistant, and never has been a problem here from reports we have gotten. Hale Aloha Aina was truly every thing the owner represented on their website and more. A must if you want to see Hawaii as was years ago. Tim & Linda B. Keystone, Co

With all the glowing reviews, I’m not sure what I can add—except to say, yes, yes, yes. This is a magical place with barely a flaw and worthy of the accolades. The bucolic setting, the beautifully maintained grounds, the solitude and serenity, the coolness at the higher elevation, and the charm and cleanliness of the cottage were all compelling. And Tom and Missy were most helpful in preparation for our trip. In considering this place there are some things to know, however. Pahala isn’t the least bit of a tourist town—it’s about as old-time Hawaii as you can get—definitely in a good way. Putting together a dinner from the selection at Pahala store isn’t a city experience, but we found it fun. Restaurants are a ways off, but we weren’t tempted except on one night visit to Kilauea. Runs, and walks in the neighborhood were a delight. We bicycled a delightful lightly-traveled but paved farm road almost to Na’alehu. (Be warned of a big hill at the end!) And, saving the best for last—every day we rose early and sat on the lenai with our coffee and mangos to watch the sun rise and listen to the world wake up in Wood Valley.

My husband and i LOVED this cottage! It was everything the pictures and listing described and more - beautiful, peaceful, very private. THe cottage itself was clean and well-maintained, thanks to the personable caretakers Davin and Mona. THe grounds and property are magical. We arrived late at night in the dark, and when we woke up in the morning the sight literally took our breath away it was so gorgeous. Owners Tom and Missy were extremely helpful with our original trip planning and very accessible all along, although we didn't need much help once we got there and found it was all that we hoped for and more. We are avid hikers so the location and proximity to Volcanoes National Park worked perfectly for us. If you want to be in the middle of all the action and close to lots of restaurants etc. then this might not be the place for you, but if you're looking for a setting that will nourish your soul, promote true relaxation, and even let you feel a little like a 'local', then we would highly recommend Hale Aloha Aina!
Owner response:Gosh... our guests really do say it best!! This home brings out the POET in everyone! I Wood Valley has the same effect on me and you may have read my poem... it really is hard to describe all the feeling this place evokes... there is no other place to be in love, rekindle love or BE LOVED! I am so happy that you experienced such tranquility and peace during your stay and hope to hear from you again! Mahalo for taking the time to help our future guests decide if Hale Aloha AIna "IS" the place they have been searching for their dream vacation! My favorite thing to do when I visit the hale is to sit out on the lanai with a glass of wine and read our guest book. It gives us great pleasure to be able to offer such a special paradise for all to enjoy! Much Aloha!!

This was our first Hawaii vacation and it won't be our last! Hale Aloha Aina was certainly a good choice. It is a well maintained jewel in Wood Valley, it was pretty much a home away from home, we wanted for nothing! The property is as Missy and Tom describe, and what beautiful grounds surrounded the Hale! We are not hotel folk and this suited us so well, being able to shop at the local markets and get such fresh produce and then having a fully equipped kitchen meant we could eat home cooked meals. We were also lucky to have some of the little bananas from the yard, the grounds keeper shared them with us.....oh how wonderful! Missy and Tom are wonderful to deal with and gave us some wonderful information to read before our arrival. The Hale is truly in the country, so peaceful, relaxing and rejuvenating. The sun streaming in the windows woke us every morning and watching the Japanese White Eye on the plants outside the bedroom window was an amazing way to start the day. The Volcano was captivating , we spent almost 12 hours there, the craters continue to be a little active but it was so interesting to see (we did a helicopter ride over one of the craters) it did not have any affect on our vacation to the Hale. We read about the Vog but did not have any problems from it. There are so many things to keep you busy (if you want) Macadamia and Coffee farms, hikes, farmers markets, Botanical Garden, black sand beaches....so beautiful... snorkeling (thanks for the loan of the equipment Missy and Tom, we went on our own "trip" had such fun and saw some wonderful fish!) I could go on and on and then you could just sit and relax on the Lanai! We did miss the stars, unfortunately we had several cloudy evening skies. While we crawled all over the Island, there were a few places we didn't make it to and some we should revisit. We would have no reservations in recommending this secluded vacation spot to our friends a relatives! Mahalo, Missy and Tom!

My husband and I were very pleased to have just spent our 3rd consecutive summer vacation at Hale Aloha Aina. It's such a charming, quiet and well-appointed place that we just couldn't bring ourselves to stay anywhere else after 2 previous wonderful stays there. Aside from being in stunningly beautiful and calm Wood Valley, The Hale is a really great bargain - the fully equipped kitchen meant that we could eat like the locals and enjoy the farmer's market produce - a real money saver! The bed is, as always quiet and comfy. The tap water is the most delicious water you will drink anywhere (we looked forward to drinking it every year!). If you go during new moon phases on a clear night, you will see more stars than you've ever seen before - right from the back yard! Other perks: Only 20 minutes to Volcano Park and 10 minutes from Honu sightings at Black Sand Beach! Only an hour to Hilo... But forget about the distances. Hale Aloha Aina is such a wonderful place that you won't mind your daily drive to the beaches on the Kohala Coast! We highly recommend Hale Aloha Aina for couples looking for a quiet place to reconnect, recharge, refresh, and enjoy each other's company in paradise.
Owner response:There's something magical about Wood Valley and Hale Aloha Aina! Several guests have returned every year to enjoy the peace and splendor that surrounds the hale. One of our guests said it best... there's no better place to be in love, rekindle love or just be LOVED! Mahalo Dianna for taking the time to help future guests decide if this is the paradise they are seeking! It's not just a rental... but an experience of a lifetime escaping to our Big Island Cottage!

My husband and I were so very lucky to have discovered Hale aloha aina! From the minute we arrived we felt comfortable and at home. Missy and Tom have very considerately outfitted their home with everything that you could ever need or want on your trip to explore the big island. We took a day just to spend at the house and enjoy the yard, the bicycles and the wonderfully relaxing hammock in the backyard. There was never a concern about the power supplied by the solar panels. We also experienced a couple of days of overcast and rainy weather; still not any problem with the power. In our opinion there is no better place to stay, come home to after a day exploring, make dinner and relax on the back lanai and listen to the night sounds of Wood Valley. Every morning was delightful, the birds and the sunrise come to life and you are there to experience it all, while enjoying the local coffee. We will always remember this wonderful little house and look forward to our next stay at Hale aloha aina.

Beautiful place up in wood valley. We esp. enjoyed the quiet, the fruit trees (we collected lemons, limes, guavas, and Hawaiian raspberries from the property), the large area, and the cabin. Beautiful backcountry roads for a morning or evening jog, and drives past macadamia nut plantations to come home. The cabin was very clean and comfy...we never had a problem with the solar power...even after two full days of rain, using the laundry, TV, or radio. A bonus for us the availability of a few items (if you take care of them) like beach towels, an umbrella, guide books, and snorkel gear! I should have left mine at home! Kitchen had everything we needed, and the grill outside was prefect. Lots of variable weather in Dec...some rain, clouds, sun... The only downside is the location...it's a pretty long drive to just about everywhere except the black sands beach. But that's a price to pay for privacy!

My husband and I were enchanted with Missy & Tom's hideaway at the end of a beautiful valley hugging the mountains. We enjoyed every time we turned off the highway, driving through the small town and up the road past the macadamia nut farms, coffee plants, animals grazing on lush land and the Buddhist temple. Coming "home" was so nice. To walk through the french doors onto the lanai and sit and watch for birds, listen to the baaaaa's of the neighbor's sheep, view the expansive sky and just take a deep breath. One night we had a great wind/rain storm and sat on the lanai the entire time. We loved the proximity to Volcanoes & Hilo and the distance from Kona. We circumnavigated the island one day and zip-lined on the very north end of the island. What a spectacular drive stopping at waterfalls, skirting the sea on windy roads, driving through ranch lands of Waimea then continuing on a literal highway above the clouds to zipline through a forest. Couldn't ask for a more quiet, peaceful, clean, up-to-date, green and serene accommodation. Tom & Missy thought of everything and I must think about being in this special place at least once a day. Mahalo!

The Hale is truly idyllic. We were there for our 25th anniversary & it was wonderful; the photos & virtual tours do not lie. It's relaxed, secluded, quiet - away from the world & worries. Watching the sunrise from the porch with morning coffee was indescribably delicious; the sound of rain on the roof was incredibly romantic. Actually, it was so nice & comfortable it was hard to get started for daily activities. It's almost tempting to spend all the time there - it's a perfect place to decompress and rediscover each other. We will definitely be returning.

Aloha Missy! What a wonderful time at your cottage! We understand why you are excited to retire (in sooo many ways!) We just wanted to let you know we had a great time and have decided next time we need to stay for 2 weeks to get everything in that we missed out on. Hawaii is absolutely beautiful!! Coming home to the humidity has not been very exciting for us, but, we missed out on the 90 degree temps here which did not dissappoint me any! The cottage is beautifully decorated, and the patio is a wonderful wake up or good night setting. The last night, the sky cleared so that we did not miss out on all of the stars, what a grand finale! Apple bananas are delicious!! We met the grounds keeper Daven and another local Dane, they were both very informative and helpful!! Very friendly!! Thank you so much again for sharing your beautiful home and your wisdom on places to visit. The break from work and fast paced "life" has been much appreciated. Wonderful memories have been made as well as plans, hopes and dreams for our next 25 yrs! Mahalo to both you and Tom!

I surprised my girlfriend with a trip to the Big Island, and as I was looking for places to stay, I somehow found a link to Hale Aloha Aina. I am SO glad that I found it!!!! We arrived at night, after the long dark drive up the hill... thinking... "where in the hell are we?" As soon as we got there, we new this was a special place. Completely isolated, totally quiet, fresh breeze, very clean, decorated nicely... we felt right at home immediately. Waking up to that first view of the property blew our minds!!! We roamed around, taking in the sunshine, the peace, and the overall feel of the place. We definitely enjoyed coming back to the house each day after travelling around the island. We found the CD collection and put on the perfect songs to add to our relaxed mood. Sometimes we took some blankets out to the lawn and napped out in the open air. I had also brought my guitar to strum, and the acoustics of the vaulted ceilings made for excellent sound in the kitchen area. It is one of the best places we have ever stayed! A true romantic getaway. It feels like a little secret... one we plan to visit again and again.

The property owners Tom and Missy were gracious and friendly. The Cottage and grounds were impeccably kept and decorated. Absolutely everything had been thought of - for a week it became our fond home away from home! The location was remote, which was what we were looking for. Located just a short drive from Pahala and 20 minutes from Volcanoes National Park, it was just close enough to beaches and parks and hikes to be convenient. The location is also very quiet and very dark at night - great for stargazing! Fully stocked kitchen, laundry, indoor and outdoor showers, a spacious lanai, plus all kinds of gear helped make our stay more welcome and also more economical. We cooked in most nights and found that if we didn't feel like going out on a day trip, we were content to read or sunbathe on the property. Lots of friendly birds for the birdwatchers - cardinals there are so bold that they'll come right up to you if you whistle back! Just a big slice of paradise. We're planning on going again next year!

We had the very good fortune to visit the Big Island in February for a 9-day trip. We chose Missy and Tom's lovely cottage in Wood Valley, just south of Volcano Nat'l Park, for the full stay - and couldn't soak up more pleasure from this lovely slice of heaven!!! It has all the charms we were hoping for - full kitchen, total comfort and privacy, lovely landscaping, beautiful light and views, as well as the delightful sounds of nature. The sounds of birds and farm animals softly greeted us every morning, and the expansive star- filled sky bid 'sweet dreams' to us each night. The beauty is nearly beyond words - it's a must experience place, where one can re-charge, and appreciate the unique offerings of the amazing Big Island. We really enjoyed being a little removed from the tourist hustle, and it was astounding how much information was available at the cottage, or provided by the hosts. Missy and Tom put so much care and thoughtfulness into their hospitality, and we as guests never had a need that was not met. We enjoyed picking up produce and fresh fish in Hilo, and bringing the bounty back to the cottage for delicious tropical-flavored meals. And we also enjoyed eating at some of the local restaurants. We looked forward every morning to a delicious cup of home-brewed Ka'u-grown coffee. There's so much to experience on Hawaii, that one visit can't possibly be enough. We are already planning another visit, and hope we have the good luck to stay at Hale Aloha Aina again. It stays with us in our hearts, along with the honu, i'iwi and 'amakihi, and THANK YOU for providing such special memories. Mahalo!

We stayed here in July of 2009, it was for our twentieth anni. AS caretakers of a similer place , we found that it is all that it says! The grounds are well taken care of, the linens are top notch & plenty of them in case the weather turns chilly. It is a peaceful & serene place to unwind from the hectic real world. I am looking for another excuse to go back altho we live on the Big Island it is a perfect hide away!

Away from Hotel Ressorts this is a really special and wonderful cottage to stay, by far the best we could find on Big Island. It is a place of Peace and Privacy and totally surrounded by nature where you can still feel the Aloha Spirit and where you can have dreams and live your dreams with your loved one. There is a huge garden with trees, birds and fresh lemons. You can play cricket in the garden or sit in the wonderful lanai in the morning and enjoy the sunrise or you can lay in the hammock among the trees. In the beautiful cottage you can find everything you need. The cottage is Solarpowered and works perfectly. Only sometimes in the morning depending on the winds it can be a little cold before Sunrise. But for this case there is a small gas heater which we could use. The Owners Tom and Missy are very friendly and helpful and in the cottage you will find all the information you need to know about Big Island. The home is a good starting point for hiking tours or visiting the Volcano National Park or going to the close Black Sand Beach where you can see huge Turtles. It is a perfect place to relax and to feel at home. Thanky you so much Missy and Tom

We much prefer staying in a stand alone cottage with space then in a "mega resort" and if you are like this too then this is the place for you! The cottage is completely by itself yet really close enough to do anything. We stayed 24 days and completely loved the fact that each started and ended at Tom and Missy's cottage:) Within 30 minutes is Volcanos (do not worry about the "vog"- it was completely a non-issue at the cottages location! The air quality within the lush wood valley was far superior then a nice day in our Denver area!), 10 min the Black Sand Beach where we saw turtles sunning themselves, an hour is Hilo. 90 min is both Mauna Kea AND Kona. The cottage itself is awesome - very comfortable, very clean and an unbelievable place to unwind. The grounds too are unreal, incredibly fantastic due to the attention of Dave the very friendly landscaper who always called to let us know when he was planning to come by! He even found us some berries. Missy is a joy to work with through out too:) We would HIGHLY recommend to anyone to stay.

On our frequent trips to each of the Hawaiian islands, we NEVER go back to a vacation rental twice. Our recent and second trip to Hale Aloha Aina was the first time we broke that rule, because we've never been able to find another place that evokes the level of emotions that this perfect cottage does. There is no better place to be in love! The Big Island is called big for a reason, and we can say that although we noted very high activity at the volcano and much larger plumes of volcanic fog than on our last trip, we never noticed it at or near the cottage, even though its only a 20 minute drive away. Every morning except one was bright sunshine and clear skies. We did not stay for the 7th night as originally planned, in order to make it to Kauai for a vacation home rental that required we stay at least 5 days. That was the most expensive place we have ever booked at approx $500/night, a huge place on an oceanside bluff with hot tub, jacuzzi, and every amenity one could imagine, including access to its own private beach. Yet, we found that within a couple of days our minds and hearts were drifting back to your cottage, a place that makes us feel like no other vacation home we have ever rented on any island on 13 island trips. And so, as we write this review, and since we've returned home a few days ago, we find our minds constantly drifting back to thoughts of Hale Aloha Aina, and the cottage, the outdoor shower, the stars, cooking for each other in a surprisingly well equipped kitchen, continuous walks around the beautiful and expansive property. If there's a place on earth that brings a higher level or peace, intimacy, love and passion, we haven't found it yet. We'll keep looking, but in the meantime, can't imagine a trip to the Hawaiian islands without an extended stay at Hale Aloha Aina.
Owner response:Aloha Rob and Paula, How wonderful that you feel so connected to the lush aina and sweet hale! After five years of renting our home, we never get tired of hearing what a wonderful experience it was for our guests. It fills my heart with joy that we can offer a place of peace and contentment for people like yourselves who just need some 'time out'. It is hard to put into words, but having a chance to just breathe is precious. For our future guests who are concerned with the vog, it really depends on the trade winds. We can certainly say that it has affected our visibility of the coast line all the way to Kona at times and sometimes the sunrise is a yellow ball in a hazy glow. It is a spectacular site to see the lava enter the ocean and where on earth can you be in paradise and witness an active volcano. The Big Island is like no other Paradise on Earth! I truly feel that the 'Mana' of Hale Aloha Aina is a living spirit that helps us to reclaim our connection to the Aina (earth) and brings us closer to those we love. Reading our guest comments says it all!

I would like to start with saying that this is a perfect place to relax & fall in love again. As we live here on the Big island we were able to retreat from our hectic world & re-connect with each other. The place is very clean -quiet-te grounds are beautiful to walk thru. Missy & Tom have made this a wonder land of a slice of real Hawaii. We do believe that anyone staying here will not regret it! Mahalo again for making our 20 year mark a special one
Owner response:Coming from Kamaina's...this is a real compliment! There is something about this little cottage on this hugh property that rekindles the spirit and the heart! Never thought I would be able to experience Hawaii in this fashion. Felt like home. If you want quiet and beautiful folage as far as the eye can see, this is the place. I would advise people visiting the volcano to listen to Park advice, during heavy activity, regarding inhaling fumes. The Island holds wonderous adventures everywhere. The villages are special also. The Big Island offers cool evenings enough for a sweat shirt and warm beautiful waters. Can't say enough so you should experience for yourself. Mahalo

We spent a week in this perfect cottage nestled in lovely Wood Valley in early April. Everything about the cottage - the quiet location, the comfy bed, the garden full of wonderful fruit trees and colorful flowers, the friendly neighbors - was just what we hoped for. The cottage is very well equipped - it truly has every convenience you could want. The owners want your vacation to be perfect and go out of their way to make it so. Ka'u Valley coffee - best ever!! And, grown right across the street by the property manager. Can't recommend it highly enough!!

We had an absolutely wonderful time. The Big Island is such a humbling land and your cottage was the most inspiring place wake up and come home to. We loved it so much we spent a day doing nothing but reading books on the lanai and enjoying the breeze. It really made our vacation extra special. Tom and Missy have thought of everything! The little details (sunscreen in the medicine cabinet, washer and dryer, boogie boards, snorkeling gear, music, etc) really made a huge difference. I have been recommending this cottage to anyone who will listen :-)

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing week at beautiful Hale Aloha Aina. We felt pampered in the home and setting, off the beaten path, enjoyed the incredible night sky, and refreshed after an incredible eight days there. This home is in between Hilo and Kona so we spent time exploring those settings as well as the south coast. The air quality was great but it is the rainy side so we saw more clouds than the north coast folks, I'm sure. But the rain makes this setting lush and beautiful. I would highly recommend this to anyone needing a quiet break. We'll go again and recommended this to several of our friends. Bob and Jolene

We have settled into the winter cold of New Jersey and the only thing that keeps us going is the memory of Hale Aloha paradise. This is truly the Garden of Eden (without the snake!) The adventurous trip finding the cottage was a big part of the experience but the directions were explicit and we found our way. Once there we melted in serenity and relaxed from our arduous 13 hour trip. The setting, the landscape, the fruit trees, the immaculate and serene interior, THE STARS, all added to make our stay at the cottage one of the best we have ever had in all our travels! We love Big Island - the pace is so much slower than Maui - and our only regret is that we didn't book the entire trip there. And also - thank you for the beautiful sunrises! We will be back!

Our stay at Hale Aloha Aina was the perfect way to experience the real Hawaii! Situated on a private acreage in the cooler elevated area of Pahala this cottage is sweet. We enjoyed many a relaxing evening on the back lanai after after a day of exploring, hiking and snorkelling. The lack of light pollution would reward us with amazing star-studded night skys as we planned our next day's adventure over a glass of wine and the solitude of the neigborhood (surrounded by other acreages) always ensured us of a peaceful sleep. This fully stocked home provided us with such extras as beach mats, towels, snorkel gear and deck chairs for days at the beach as well as flashlights and fleece jackets for exploring the caves and lava tubes which allowed us to travel light for our three week stay. Davin, the groundskeeper, kept us well stocked with fresh tree-ripened fruit from the abundant yard and Mona had fresh cut flowers to welcome us to this immaculate and clean home. Tom and Missy called us to make sure all was well (the telephone in the home is a real bonus for booking tours, chartering a boat or helicoper!) and the reference material in the home covering the local sights kept us scrambling to see it all! This little piece of paradise is the perfect destination for a quiet, authentic (and romantic) visit to the big island of Hawaii and the central location to Hilo, Kona, Volcano National Park, Kapoho and all the beaches, trails and sights is a real bonus. Why settle for a sterile apartment when you can stay in your own private shangri-la? Well done Tom and Missy - this is a real treasure! Bruce and Lorraine Roberts Creek Canada

We came to the Hawaii to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We spent a full week at the cottage and loved it! While we would spend our day out exploring all that the Big Island has to offer, our mornings started out with breakfast on the lanai. Usually with fruit fresh of the trees. We put hundreds of miles on our rental car, but had a feeling of "coming home" each evening. Everything is lovely! And thank you so much for the extras such as the cooler, beach towels and snorkel gear. We put them all to good use! We had such a great time and many, many wonderful memories...

My husband and I went to Hawaii for the first time this fall. Our stay at Hale Aloha Aina was WONDERFUL. We had stayed in two other cottages prior to this (which were nice, but not very private and one a little dirty), but this home was lovely. It was clean, nicely decorated, quiet, and on lovely acreage with fruit trees we could pick and eat from. The home offered snorkeling equipment and had neatly organized visitor guides to the island (and several dvd's and videos on hand to view). We have already recommended this place to friends who plan to visit Hawaii. It is a bit of a drive to the property, but well worth it. The owners were pleasant and very easy to contact and work with.

My wife and I spent a week exploring the big island, put over 1100 miles on the rental, but the best part of our stay was the evenings and mornings at the cottage. I think they have the local insects trained to be quite after 10:00pm. It was so peaceful to sit on the Lanai and enjoy the surroundings.
Owner response:Mahalo for your review! Actually, a few of the residents of Wood Valley have worked hard to keep it quiet...especially after the coqui frogs took home on the Big Island. Thanks to them the valley is still peaceful. Hale Aloha Aina is at 2500 elevation which keeps mild temperatures and we are not bothered by the usual tropical bugs like cock roaches found closer to the ocean. You won't find them anywhere near the cottage! It is truely a special place and we are glad to share our hidden treasure with you!

I wanted to write you and tell you what a wonderful time we had and how much we enjoyed your beautiful cottage. Honestly, I can't think of any place that could have been more perfect or romantic to spend our honeymoon! It was absolutely fabulous!! We loved the privacy, the tasteful decorations, the stars, the hammock, the fresh water! We found the cottage to be perfect in every way and if we ever are able to get back to Hawaii, I can't imagine staying anywhere else! Thank you so very much for such a beautiful honeymoon! As far as the volcano, we weren't troubled at all. We only noticed the ash when we drove toward the volcano. About 10-15 miles from your house going toward Hilo it was pretty bad for a few miles, but then cleared back up. It wasn't bad at the actual volcano site either. The air was always fresh and nice at the cottage. Thanks again for a wonderful time! Mahalo, Joy and Josiah
Owner response:Hale Aloha Aina is truly a lovers paradise and we are so happy to share our hale with couples celebrating special occasions like honeymoons and anniversaries. It provides our guests with the opportunity to experience the hidden treasures of Hawaii and brings you back in time when everything was not so commercialized. We take pride in our home away from home and want to thank you for choosing our vacation home as your home away from home! Looking forward to hearing from you on your anniversary!

My wife and I stayed at Hale Aloha Aina for the first part of our honeymoon last August. We were excited to stay somewhere that was remote, full of natural beauty, and off of the grid. We arrived at night, despite Tom & Missy's recommendations to arrive during the day, but we didn't have too much trouble finding it. The property was clean on arrival and looked very nice. The various literature provided by Tom and Missy in the cottage was more than adequate to understand how to use everything in the cottage, which sites were nearby, and also how to identify the various plants and trees on the property. The next day we woke up to beautiful sunshine flowing in through the windows and motivation to explore. I think each time we went outside to explore throughout our stay, we would discover some new tree or plant that we had previously not seen. The sun was very bright in the morning, but sometimes got a little hazy in the afternoon due to the volcanic fog. However, this was not really a problem for us. In reality, it was a benefit as this meant the volcano was not too far away for us to visit. We would often drive West around the coast to a black sand beach not far way to relax and have a picnic. We even had a chance to visit the green sand beach (the only one that I know of), which was also not too far from Hale Aloha Aina (except for the 2 mile hike once you park). We never had to use the generator for backup power at the cottage. The battery-life bar showed full power throughout our stay; I guess the sun was bright for long enough to handle us. Oh, and we didn't even have power problems when using the washer and dryer--it all worked great. I must say that it was very nice being able to pick fresh fruit from the trees in the yard, including limes for our drinks. It made me feel very much in touch with nature. I would highly recommend this property to honeymooners, people seeking a romantic getaway, adventure seekers, and sightseers. The property was remote enough and beautiful enough to spend the majority of your time. However, if you wanted to venture off to some cool sites, there were many available (the black sand beach, the green sand beach, the volcano, etc). We enjoyed it more than the second half of our stay near Kona coast (too busy). Tom and Missy treated us great as well as the grounds keeper we talked to on our way out. Thanks Tom & Missy for a great stay!

It's not often when your expectations are exceeded, but this was one getaway that exceeded in every way. We've never been able to find a place that we thought, "wow, we would love to retire here in 15-20 years." Now we can no longer say that and unfortunately anywhere else we stay will have to measure up to Hale Aloha Aina and Wood Valley. Magical, inspiring, and oozing serenity. After putting miles on the car each day and spending time at all the amazing sights, we were extremely grateful to have this home away from home to come back to. For those of you debating whether to book this oasis, don't hesitate. Our only regret is that we went somewhere else for our second week. There are so many things to do and see - we felt like we were exploring new worlds every day. 100 year old lava with barely any vegetaion, and around the bend the lava was lush with vegetation. After two weeks of non-stop travel we realized we had only touched the spots we wanted to see and in our mind are planning how and when we can go back. The erupting volcano was an added bonus - to experience the power and understand the impact was like nothing we had seen before. From an educational perspective it is simply amazing - and the concerns about vog seemed rather overblown. Once you live in a major metropolitan area and live with pollution every day, vog is relatively harmless. The grocery store in Pahala doesn't look like much, but once inside you realize they have great variety and the prices are very reasonable. We only found this out at the end of our stay and wanted to pass on this tip. If you are planning a trip to the Big Island, have a wonderful time and make sure to include a sojourn at Hale Aloha Aina. You won't regret it.

My husband and I stayed in Hale Aloha Aina for our honeymoon this past May 2008. The place surpassed our expectations. Tom and Missy's place is beautiful, and luxurious. The bed was so comfortable, and the furnishings are lovely. The cottage had everything that we could have wanted to cook our meals. It's remote, out of the way location in Wood Valley is a taste of paradise. This was an excellent location for us to explore the southern areas of the big island including Volcano National Park, which was the main attraction for us. There were no issues with any vog from the volcano, and it had just recently gotten more active. The valley is an oasis of macadamia and coffee farms. We purchased superb Ka'a coffee from a roadside stand on our way to the park. The black and green sand beaches are amazing. We recommend it highly.

My Husband Mike and I were looking for the perfect place for our Honeymoon. We had a tight budget, but couldn't help but search in the most exotic places on earth. I ran across a link for Hale Aloha Aina, and didn't look any further. Once I saw the price, I knew it was meant to for us! It sounded absolutly perfect on paper, and when we arrived, it truly was. I could not have asked for anything more secluded, landscapingly beautiful, and florishing with wildlife. The first morning we were there, we awoke to a family of NeNe making their way across the back yard. Every Day was new adventure in paradise. It was the perfect spot to get away, and truly enjoy one another and our curiousity! :) Minutes away from the black sand beach, and Volcanos National Park made for some great memories as we started our new life together. Even driving around the island into Kona, felt like I blink of time. Every corner had a picture waiting to be taken, and WE TOOK LOTS!! Tom and Missy have done a wonderful thing by opening up their home to the public. If you have the chance, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT WHILE YOU CAN! You will NOT regret it. I had the time of my life with my new husband, and we only hope to have the opportunity to visit again. Hale Aloha Aina was a blessing for us, and it will be a blessing for you too! Aloha! ~Shelley.
Owner response:We feel blessed as well to be able to provide an outstanding value to our guests. I know our accomodations far exceeds most vacation homes for what we charge. It is not our objective to make a profit but to maintain what we have and hopefully improve as we go. That's why I say... don't let our affordable rates confuse you... The memories that are created at Hale Aloha Aina are priceless to us!

Aloha Missy and Tom! We are back in Wisconsin after a wonderful time in Hawaii thanks to the absolutely great experience at Hale Aloha Aina. You really do have your own little paradise there. We will never forget this experience. We wished we could stay longer. It was much more than we expected - you have everything we could have wanted - and needed. The setting in incredible - just our ticket! Gretchen and I did a lot of exploring, from the Kona area on the west to Akaka Falls and the botanical gardens on the east. We had rented an SUV so we made the trip to the top of Mauna Key. We love the mountains and this was a great time. We hiked around the rim of the summit and also took the hike around the permafrost lake. Of course, we spent a day at Volcanoes Parks and hiked out to the steam flume. (The day we left, the park closed the hike for fear of a break/slide, in the lava.) We took in the macadamia nut plantation, too. We did some snorkeling at the tide pools south of Pahoa and also hiked to green beach. We loved the Hilo market and visited twice - Sat. and Wed. Mornings and evenings were spent walking around Hale Aloha Aina, enjoying three views and the fruit, and also relaxing. We bought fresh fish and experienced many foods we had never eaten, enjoying them at Hale Aloha Aina - it was fun! Again, Missy and Tom, thank you for the opportunity and for you sharing your special place. All the best to both of you!!!! Mahalo! Scott

Hi Missy,Well,,,,,,where to begin. We have been visiting Hawaii annually for +10 years, having stayed on all islands and in all forms of places to stay.Quite simply, we have never enjoyed Hawaii as much as we did during our week at your place. It was perfect! We loved the setting, the simplicity, the views, the quiet, the house itself, the location, and most of all – the quality of everything there. I have never stayed in the same place twice, but you can count on our return to your place the next time we come.We found a small, secluded beach on the South Point that was perfect for an afternoon by ourselves. Like having our own island! We had planned to do some sightseeing during the week, but ended up doing very little. We did not want to be away from the house!Once again, thanks for sharing your little piece of paradise with us. It was more than we could have expected.Enjoy your time there next month!Dave & Lisa StoneHowell, Michigan Dave StoneExecutive DirectorPowertrain, Body & Chassis – Heavy Duty GroupMitsubishi Electric Automotive America, Inc.
