  We loved the location. The neighborhood was quite. The house was very clean and had everything that we needed to feel at home. The canal had easy access to open water so it was perfect for boats or kayaks. My family and I would definitely stay here again.

  The house was perfect. It was clean and in a quite neighborhood. The canal had easy access to the open water so it was great for boast or kayaks. My family would definitely stay here again.

  This house was perfect. My brother and I rented it for the Month. It is clean and everything is provided, just like home. The area is perfect for anyone looking for a quite area. It is a little piece of heaven.

  This is a large two bedroom house with an open living room/dining room/kitchen arrangement. This all provides for quite a bit of space for a large family or a group of friends. The house was throughly clean and maintenance of kitchen, laundry and cooling equipment was excellent. We especially appreciated the ceiling fans throughout the place and on the verandah. It's a pleasant alternative to using air conditioning in warm weather, though the AC worked just fine on the hot days we experienced. One of the bedrooms has bunk beds in addition to the standard bed. We didn't need the extra bedding but the bunk beds provide sleeping space for additional guests. Each bedroom as well as the main room has a flat screen TV set available for use. The location is very good for anyone bringing a boat. It's on a canal that leads to Florida Bay, a short distance away. The community itself is small and not any sort of marina or commercial type of place. Therefore, the waterways are uncrowded and car traffic is very little indeed.. The house is located within the Key Deer Nature Preserve which has been set aside to preserve the Key Deer, a species that is endangered. The deer, no more than three feet high, are very cute and extremely friendly i.e. they are looking for food handouts. However, regulations forbid people feeding the deer in order to keep the animals healthy. In addition, the speed limit in the Preserve is 30 mph to safeguard the deer - and is observed by drivers, from what we saw. A middle-size shopping center is five miles away from the house on highway US 1, in what can be considered "downtown" Big Pine Key. It's an easy drive there at 30 mph. There are several restaurants near this shopping center. Key West is 30 miles to the west on US 1 and Marathon is 20 miles to the east on US !. Both cities provide as much shopping opportunities for basics as you probably have at home as well as plenty of good restaurants. A truly noteworthy aspect of this house is the peacefulness of the community. The Nature Preserve is right across the street. Things are quiet simply because so few people are around. It's was a very pleasant place for our stay of one month.

  Myself and a few friends from college stayed here for New Year's Eve 2012. What a great place! It is tucked away deep within the deer preserve itself, so you really feel like you are "away from it all," yet the house is conveniently located to both Key West and Marathon. We spent most of our time down in Key West, and the worries I had about traffic abated when I realized we were getting there in about 30 minutes. And the drive down is absolutely beautiful. I probably took more pictures from the passenger seat on that drive than anywhere else in the keys! Ultimately, we had a beautiful house to stay in (and didn't kill our entire budget by staying in Key West over NYE), free wifi, cable tv, a TON of space for the four of us with seating on both levels of the deck, a nice grill, outdoor fish and bait cooler, and most importantly....a hammock. The hammock was the most sought after item the entire vacation, and one of us could often be found laying there under the filtered light of the palm trees watching deer quietly grass just ten feet below us. Perfect.

  My husband and I are from Canada and this had to have been the nicest home we have ever spent our winter holiday at. Leo and Diana's home is so clean and comfortable it truely exceeded our expectations. The home was decorated just beautifully and the kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed for our two month holiday. Our favorite place to relax was the covered deck with the two ceiling fans as it was really beautiful and hot when we were down there. We would sit on the deck and read books or play cards and watch the Key deer come through the back yard. The owners were easy to get a hold of for questions we had about the area and actually left information in the house on local attractions. They also provided a pass to Bahia Honda State Park which we used frequently to launch our boat and go out fishing under the bridges. The location of the home is perfect in many ways. If we wanted to go to Key West it wasn't a long drive or if we wanted to go up to Marathon to the Key Fisheries Market for lunch or dinner it was just a short trip. Also, the weekend flea market in Big Pine Key was always lots of fun to walk around and pickup some nice gifts and trinkets for back home. We would highly recommend this house to anyone who is looking for a vacation in the beautiful Florida Key's. We are already booked for next year and we cannot wait.   This was my second stay at Captain D's and may have been even better than the first despite the windy thanksgiving weather. Both times I have stayed the house has been exceptionally clean. I think most of our time this trip was spent on the giant wrap around porch or down by the canal with a beer when we were not out on the water. The house is in a great location to hide from the wind, With 15-20mph winds all week I was still able to get around the bay and out of the wind with my little 16ft aluminum boat and still grab a few lobster. Two things we did this week future renters should check out were snorkeling looe key with one of the local snorkel charters and hiking around bahia honda state park. Thanks!!Till next time...

  This is an excellent place to relax in the lower keys. There is an abudance of deer located right around the property which made it a unique experience. Location was great, close to supermarket and No Name Pub. Also great for boaters, just a couple of minutes from the wide open Gulf of Mexico and great fishing & diving! Nice patio too, really enjoyed BBQing fresh lobster tails out there. We hit Key West a couple of times, not a bad drive, under 30 mins, plenty to do there for all walks of life. Will definitly be returning here!

  Leo, just wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed your wonderful house! It was exactly as pictured and was perfect for us... Folks, if you are looking for a place in Big Pine Key, do not pass this one up...we sat on the covered porch in the evenings and watched the Key Deer come in the back yard...and I have to admit, if we are ever so lucky to make a move there, this would be exactly how I would want our house to be!   Like to start by thanking the owners (Leo & Diana) for being wonderful hosts and allowing us to enjoy their beautiful home. Located in a quiet setting that's close to all the best the lower keys has to offer, a short drive to key west and just down the road (us1) from one of the nicest beaches in the country Bahia Honda's sand spur beach! The home offered every comfort you could ask for and it's very clean and inviting. We have been renting vacation homes in the lower keys several times a year for over 15 years and this was one of our best stays. Don't forget to try the pizza @ no name pub while enjoying your stay (it's great). To Leo & Diana, THANKS AGAIN!!
