Come nourish body, mind and spirit in this special Carmel-by-the-Sea cottage called 'Sanctuary' that was remodeled with a new kitchen and two guest bathrooms. The owners have created a wonderful refuge in this 1,700-square-foot cottage and invite you to take time out to experience the breathtaking beauty and exquisite charm of Carmel and the surrounding Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur Coast. The cottage is filled with a wonderful collection of books, videos, DVDs, music and art that ranges from the whimsical to the sacred, a collection that us both inspirational and entertaining.
A powerful sense of place calls forth the artist within and says come play, write, paint, create, rest, allow, be.
The cottage lends itself to reflection and renewal and at the same time, everything you could possibly need, including a picnic basket, beach chairs even a beach grill (Carmel allows fires on the beach), is available for those who want to venture out to the beaches, countryside and nearby redwood forests of Big Sur.
The owner once had an Inn in Vermont and special care has been taken to provide many of the same amenities, including a bottle of wine from a local vineyard and hors d'oeuvres upon arrival. The beds have luxury cotton sheets, hypo-allergenic comforters, un-feather beds, oversized towels (on a towel warmer), Spa bathrobes, magazines, wine tasting and much more (see amenities).
Upon entering Sanctuary with its colorful cascading flower boxes, you will find a lovely space with vaulted white ceilings, warm white cottage walls, oak floors, and plenty of windows that allow light and yet are oriented to maintain privacy. On the first floor is the living room with a wood-burning fireplace and gas kindler, and a dining area that seats six - 8 guests and opens to the newly remodeled kitchen.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a professional Viking range and top appliances, unique serving pieces and platters for entertaining. There are numerous cookbooks to browse through including one by the owner, who has written a cookbook filled with great recipes
and stories from her life in Vermont at the Inn at the Round Barn Farm in Waitsfield, Vt.
On the first floor there is a guest bedroom called the birdhouse room with a queen-sized bed that has a white picket fence bed frame and two small bird houses on posts. Just seeing this bed invites you to come nestle under the cozy plush comforter with a good novel and cup of tea.
The media room has two large picture windows overlooking the flower-covered deck and fenced-in back yard (pet and child-friendly). There is a 42-inch HDTV color TV with full cable, video/DVD library, high-speed wireless internet connection and numerous books. There is a trundle twin bed couch that can sleep 2 singles or be made into a king bed with a memory foam topper.
The first floor also has an updated renovated bathroom with subway tiled shower as well as a washer and dryer. There is a wonderful private deck with grill, comfortable furniture and distant ocean views with white water thru the pines making for spectacular Carmel sunsets.
On the upper level is the master bedroom with a king-sized Bed. There is a HDTV with complete cable/video/DVD and a wood-burning fireplace with gas kindler. The vaulted ceilings and tall windows give a sense of spaciousness and the feeling of being in a tree house.
One can catch beautiful sunsets looking toward the ocean. The crisp night air, warm cozy comforters and the sound of the ocean in the distance make for a wonderful night's sleep.
The newly remodeled master bathroom is done in cottage white with butter-cream accents. There are oak floors, a vintage cast-iron bathtub with double rolled edges with distant views out a large picture window to the ocean and privacy from the tall pines.
There is a separate shower with hand-crafted subway tiles, and frame-less glass enclosure, two pedestal sinks, ample storage and a separate water closet this is located inside the master suite. Please note that if a guest is sleeping in the Velveteen Rabbit Room that they would have to walk thru the master suite to access the upstairs bathroom or use the bathroom downstairs below that is accessible off the hallway. There is also a large walk-in closet with plenty of handing space and room to put your suitcases.
The Velveteen Rabbit Room is a small room that has multiple uses. There is a trundle bed that sleeps 1-2 individuals and can be made into a king-size bed. It could be used to sleep children or adults, provide office space, artist's studio or anything else you might imagine.
There is a large second library located on the stairs landing between the master suite and velveteen room that is filled with many inspirational and entertaining books.
Any guest who stays here falls in love with this special cottage by the sea called Sanctuary.
Additional Rate Details and Rental Terms.....
**Rates are based on up to 8 guests (including infants & children). For 9 guests, add $200 per month.
* Accidental Loss and Damage Waiver $75 instead of security deposit (covers up to $2,000 unintentional damage to house or its contents but does not cover negligent abuse or neglect)
* Credit Card number must be on file for security against any damages should damage be due to abuse or neglect and are not accidental in nature. Guest would be responsible for any uncovered damages.
* Non-refundable cleaning fee $400.
* Stays of 30 days or more require mid-stay cleanings every two weeks that you will be responsible for scheduling with our Vacation House Manager assigned to the rental and paying cleaners for directly at the time each cleaning is performed at the rate of $25/hour. This is over and above the cleaning fee itemized in your contract.
* Pet Fees: $100 each large dog (1 dog ); $150 two small dogs; if arranged after acceptance of contract, contract must be amended to adjust price. Must sign Pet Waiver and have Purchased Waiver $75. Owner requests no barking dogs as neighbors will complain.
* PG&E gas and electricity are paid by guest.
* Cancellation Policy: If you cancel 60 days or less before your arrival date, you maybe eligible for a full refund only if we can re-rent the property for the same dates and rental rate less the $150 administration fee and any bank or PayPal fees incurred by the owner. If you cancel 60 days or more before your arrival date, you are eligible for a full refund of the rental amount less the $150 administration fee and any bank or PayPal fees incurred by owner. Please read the full terms in the Rental Agreement before signing for any recent changes to this abbreviated policy statement - the Rental Agreement contains our current policy.
* Full payment is due at time of booking if booked less than 60 days prior to arrival date.
* If booked more than 60 days in advance of arrival date, 50% of total amount is due to secure reservation with balance of total due 60 days prior to arrival date.
* Access information and directions will be provided once payment is made in full.
* This is a 2 story residence so please discuss this with us if anyone in your party has difficulty climbing stairs.
* 3 Cars Maximum, 9 Guests including visitors are maximum allowed at this property.
* Owner requests guests who are quiet and respectful of our neighbors who are close in proximity and our friends. Location of home is in quiet neighborhood.

We had the most relaxing visit at Sanctuary by the Sea during our March trip. The home was extremely clean and I love clean. Every detail was thought of throughout the home from the kitchen to the wonderful throw blankets. Our yorkie, Sasha, enjoyed her daily walks and the secret garden below the deck. I enjoyed my daily walks through town and along the beach. The instant hot water was perfect as we have tea every night. We have one at our home and I thought I would have to do without for the week, Annie was thoughtful enough to have one in this home. We have stayed at 10-12 different vacation rentals and this was by far the best on the list. We will be coming back again. Don't look at another home rent this one!Did you find this review helpful? We are leaving day after next, how sad for us. We found the home to be perfect for us. We have rented 10-12 VRBO's and this was by far the best. Annie thought of everything, the home was presented as a 5 Star resort would be. You will find that the home is a close drive to downtown to many wonderful restaurants and shops. Make sure to go to the Lush store downtown Carmel and get a bath bomb or something else for the bath, you can see the ocean as you relax in the claw foot tub, heaven. Our yorkie, Sasha, loved laying on the pillow at the corner of the sofa as well as the hidden garden beyond the gated deck. The neighborhood is very quiet, the ocean is just blocks away. It is a wonderfully long walk/run to downtown and out Scenic Ave to Mission Inn and back, about 6 or so miles, however the hills on the way back are killers. We didn't use the kitchen much, I was on strike, it's my vacation too. We went to Il Fornaio and had wonderful service, Nico's was great from lunch, but the best was driving to Big Sur and eating at one of our favorites, Ventana Inn. It's about 45 minutes but the scenic views and the food are out of this world. So sad to go but we look forward to yet another trip to Carmel.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We have rented "pet friendly" homes in the Carmel area for the past nine years and none have been as well appointed as this home! It truly is a "sanctuary" vacation rental. What a wonderful house. It's beautifully done and every detail has been considered for function and ease-of-use. In addition, there was wine and cheese awaiting us upon check-in. The neighborhood is perfect, about a 10 minute walk from down-town Carmel. There is a nice deck out back with potted flowers and herbs. Quiet, pretty, so many thoughtful details! There is one thing we laughed at over the weekend; there are so many signs throughout the home suggesting we RELAX, my son quipped it was making him feel pressured. Wow! What can I say?? If you are planning a trip to Carmel, it doesn't get much better than Sanctuary by the Sea!!!! I came to Carmel with my husband, another couple and a girlfriend. All three of us girls were running the Big Sur Marathon. Sactuary by the Sea was the perfect house for us!! Tons of space! An amazing kitchen! A glorious clawfoot tub! And only about a 5 minute walk to Downtown Carmel & the beach! The Sanctuary Vacation staff was so helpful prior to our arrival. Hopefully, we will be back to Carmel and staying at Sactuary by the Sea again soon!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, tourists without a car, girls getaway, sightseeing.

This is the most comfortable, best appointed rental we have had. The two bathrooms downstairs and the one upstairs meant ample facilities and no inconveniences. The kitchen was well supplied with dishes and cookware. The upstairs is esentially a grand room, combining kitchen, living area and a bathroom with shower that allows a large group of people to socialize without disturbing others downstairs in the three bedrooms.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We enjoyed every aspect of this cozy cottage for our one month stay. Sparkling clean and well appointed. Very light and bright. The master bedroom and bath upstairs are a real feature. A lovely view thorugh the cypress trees to the ocean a mile away either from bed or while having a bath. The openess of the kitchen, dining and living room areas with a real wood burning fireplace add to the ambience. The kitchen is stocked with every tool, dish and glass you will ever need. We feel the second bedroom is fine for kids or guests staying a few days. Just a bit small and dark, and the bathroom is part of the laundry room. This is ok...but not on par with the master quarters The deck off the media room is a very special spot on a nice day. Well protected from wind and private. Also a narrow view of the ocean. Good off street parking for two cars...(not so plentiful in Carmel). During our month there, the garden was tended on a regular weekly schedule as was the housekeeping. I called for more firewood and a new load was delivered that day. We plan to return.Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We truly enjoyed the home. When we arrived everything was clean and a welcome appetizer was in Refer. which was very nice. There was plenty to do. Ping pong, pool, lots of movies to view(didn't expect that) and also books and puzzles. The Master suite was fantastic as well as all of the house. There was a park nearby with a playground and we also found a trail to walk on. The location was not near the beach but we did not mind it as that wasn't the only reason we were there. The house was so wonderful we could of camped out there and been perfectly happy. We will definetly come back again.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

I picked this place for a leadership retreat for my organization. This place has it all, from a flat-panel TV to a piano, there are a lot of things to keep 20-year olds entertained when not doing work. Thanks for all the help!Recommended for: Families with teenagers.

We were a family of seven adults and two pets. Everything was perfect. The location was just a block from where we spent our honeymoor 50 years ago. Walking distance two shops, gallaries and places to eat. The court yard was great for our two pets and gave us a lot of privacy. We were all very happy with the accommodations.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children, tourists without a car, girls getaway, sightseeing.
