Location: Carmel By the Sea, Central Coast, California, USA (6 blocks to shops, restaurants, galleries)

Accommodations:  House, 3 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 2 Baths (Sleeps 6)

Keywords:  House

Once owned by a famous actor, director, and mayor, Papalina is a totally updated (2005) Mediterranean home. An equally great asset is its prime location - one block down a pedestrian pathway to the sands of Carmel Beach and 6 blocks to Carmel's wonderful shops, restaurants and art galleries!

The exterior is cream with a red tile roof; window flower boxes and tall arched windows for oceanviews. The interior is designed in a casual elegance with colors of white, terracotta, soft lime and Tuscan yellow. Floors are hardwood and stone tile. There are two fireplaces, many windows, and a wonderfully sunny and private brick patio.

The bank of glass doors in the dining room open fully to bring the partially covered patio into the living area, providing even more room for entertaining or simply reading a great book!

As you enter Papalina’s carved front door, one enters an entry hall with guest closet. To the right is a three-room guest suite. The sitting room features two leather recliners, TV armoire, and a charming fireplace. The bedroom features a king bed, flanked by bedside reading lamps and a hand-painted chest. The three piece bath has toilet, sink and shower. Throughout there are many windows that let wonderful light into this guest suite. A door closes to the hallway and stairs to insure privacy.

Dark wood stairs lead to the upper, main level. One is greeted by the airiness of the 35 foot long living-dining room with skylight and walls of windows. The west wall is curved with tall arched windows for that spectacular sunset and ocean view. The east wall of glass doors, at the dining room area, opens up to the brick patio and garden. It is private, a rarity in Carmel by the Sea. The kitchen is on the south side while the hall to two bedrooms and full bath are on the north.

The living room focus is an oceanview by day and a large gas fireplace for cool evenings by night. There is a TV-DVD armoire, plush sofa, seagrass chairs with ottomans and a beautiful marble-topped coffee table. Colorful originals and prints add to the beauty of the room. The dining table seats six. It is an especially nice area when the glass doors are open. The patio table with six chairs is a perfect spot for a quiet breakfast, lunch, dinner or reading hide-away.

Granite countertops and a stone floor in the functional kitchen add to the ambience of this Mediterranean home. White dishes are mixed with colorful extra dishes and serving pieces. Mexican pewter serving pieces are also included to make your table sparkle while dining! Equipped with new gas cooktop, cutlery, cookware, bakeware, utensils, vases, cloth place mats and napkins, you’ll just need to get to Bruno’s Market or Nielsen's, eight blocks aways specializing in delicious prepared foods, great meats, deli and produce. Supermarkets are right off Highway One.

The back hall of the kitchen includes the laundry area with washer and dryer and a back door for easy service to the patio.

The master bedroom includes king bed, bedside reading lamps and table, large chest of drawers, TV, and French doors to the patio - a delightful place to welcome the morning!

The second bedroom features a queen bed facing arched windows for oceanviews. A large desk enables this room to be used alternately as an office if your group is four people.

The bathroom has its own heating system, heat lamp, tub and shower, stone counter tops/floors and plenty of storage. This 2 bedrom/1 bath area can be closed off for privacy from the main living area.

"Papalina" means sunbonnet. We think it’s a happy name for a casual but lovely shelter. It is light and bright and easily maintained.

You will sleep well to the sound of the ocean, eat well with great restaurants, play and exercise well with all the amenities the area offers... when you enjoy a special home here at Papalina!

"Our stay at your charming Mediterranean guest home was absolutely wonderful, and we really appreciate the opportunity to acation there. Over the years, we have stayed at many different places in Carmel-by-the-Sea. However, John and I both agree that Papalina is by far our most favorite. The location is ideal for golfing, shopping, beaching, walking, and everything else. In addition, your home is very well appointed, with all the amenities necessary for a comfortable and relaxing visit. The decor is lovely. We couldn't have asked for a more memorable trip. Thank you again for sharing your beautiful Papalina with us!"

We really enjoyed our stay at Papalina! The easy access to the beach made it easy for morning runs and wine and sunsets every evening. The decor was beautiful and we frequently used the gas fireplace. We will definitely stay at Papalina again!

We stayed at Papalina for a week in fall of 2006. The house was excellent. PROS: - Nice kitchen with garnite, high-end appliances, excellent pots & pans, utensils, etc. - Wonderful views of the ocean thru the trees. - Very easy walking access to the main beach. - Backyard is small (like most in Carmel), but beautiful and very private and tranquil. - Furnishings and decor were excellent. - Bedrooms nicely furnished, and the bed I slept in was excellent. - Finally, the home was very very clean when we arrived. - Pictures on web site accurately depict the home. - The owner is professional and easy to work with. CONS: There is only one minor negative that I can think of, which is that the home is near one of the entrances to Pebble Beach (for some this may be a positive). This causes quite a bit of traffic at times, and you just have to keep an eye on your children, so they do not wander dangerously. This is a minor issue, it will not prevent us from renting here again.
