Hendersonville house description

'Bear Necessity' is a very quiet mountain cottage near the top of Pinnacle Mountain with great views of mountain ranges, valley and Hendersonville. Great hiking and beautiful waterfalls can be found nearby in Dupont Forest, Piscah National Forest, Jones Gap State Park and Holmes Forest. In 30 minutes you can be on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Ashville, Brevard, Chimney Rock/Lake Lure, Saluda, Senic Hwy. SC 11, and Greenville. In nearby historic Flat Rock is the Flatrock Playhouse and Carl Sanburg's estate. Great restaurants and antique shops are plentiful in Hendersonville and surrounding areas. A calendar of events and brochures can be obtained at the Visitors Center on Main St. or on-line. Current brochures are kept at the house also.

You can sit out on the wrap-around porch/deck and enjoy the spectacular, year round, long range and mountain and valley views, privacy and a cool breeze. All rooms have ceiling fans. Air conditioning is seldom needed at 3000 ft. elevation, however there is a portable a/c unit that can be used in the living area. The sunroom, living room and master bedroom open onto the deck/porch.

We were fortunate to spend our 49th wedding anniversary at your lovely home. It immediately felt comfortable and was so clean!! We loved that we could travel to so many places in the area and still return in the evening to relax and enjoy the view. Hendersonville is now one of our favorite little town, who knew! We also enjoyed the sights of Asheville, Chimney Rock, Flatrock, the Highlands, and a great dinner at Haus Heidelberg. Thanks Carolyn and Ken for sharing your lovely home, and all of your help to make our stay special.

The house was more charming than it looked in the pictures. The owners were very helpful and provided lots of information to make our stay more enjoyable. The weather was gorgeous while we were there and even though it was August, we never had to use the portable air conditioner because of all the windows and sliding doors provided us with a cool mountain breeze throughout the day and night. Although we spent a good bit of time on the large porches and deck enjoying the amazing view, the downtown area of Hendersonville was quaint with many shops and restaurants to explore. Some of our favorites were Haus Heidelberg and Mike's on Main, an old fashioned sandwich and soda shop. The house was also well stocked to prepare meals on our own, with lots of delicious food found at The Fresh Market in town. We took a short scenic drive to DuPont State Forest that has plenty of hiking for all levels of experience and many beautiful waterfalls. While there are many things to do nearby, one of our favorite parts of the trip was waking up with coffee on the porch or some cocktails at night. The way the view changes each minute is breathtaking. We will certainly be back again!

We spent a week in this home and celebrated our wedding anniversary here. This home is sooooo quaint, cozy & comfortable. We felt right at home almost immediately. The Graces responded to our initial rental inquiry very quickly and the entire rental process was very professional from beginning to end. The pictures on the internet do not do it justice. The view is amazing!! The whole house was so clean and well maintained. Instructions for turning on the gas logs in the fireplace, how to turn the hot water heater on to operating the t.v. were excellent. There's even a file full of brochures and information on local restaurants and activities to do in the area. Make sure you visit the beautiful waterfalls in Dupont Forest State Park, a very short drive from the house. If you like German food, don't miss Haus Heidelberg in Hendersonville. The best German food we've had other than in Germany itself. Also, visit Grandads Apples on Chimney Rock Road....the best apples and apple doughnuts. And, don't miss Kilwins Ice Cream Shop on Main Street. The sunroom is a lovely room to sit in the morning and enjoy your coffee and watch the mountains change by the minute. We did not want to leave the house. The screened in porch is also a nice place to sit and have a meal or glass of wine while watching the sunset. And, at night we enjoyed all the twinkling lights of downtown Hendersonville and the small communities in the area. The kitchen is well stocked with any pot, pan, utensil or anything you need to prepare meals. Even a cockpot. We hope to come back to Bear Necessity next year!! Thank you Carolyn for all your help in making our stay enjoyable.

My wife & just just returned two days ago from our third visit in as many years to the house you see in the photos. The photos and description does not do it justice. It is everything you could possibly desire. It is very large yet cozy and has a warm home feeling about it. The view is as good as it could possibly get, unbelievable. You can't go wrong on this stay! July 17, 2012

Our mouths dropped when we entered the front door to see your panoramic view of the mountains. Every day we awoke to breathtaking views, waterfall adventures and sightseeing excursions. We also enjoyed the fishing, exploring Chimney Rock, antiquing and visiting wonderful local restaurants. Your home was decorated so beautifully, clean and well-supplied. Thank you for sharing it with us. It was a wonderful memory!

My sister and I spent a lovely week here to celebrate my birthday. We were delighted with the cabin, which was surprisingly spacious, especially since there was just the two of us. The cabin was very clean and furnished lovingly, obviously. The view from the wrap-around deck is nothing short of amazing. The cabin would be especially wonderful for those wanting to get away from it all and devote their time to activities in the cabin...grilling, playing games, enjoying the view, eating out on the screened in deck, and just relaxing. However, the Hendersonville area has lots of interesting things to do and the people there are so friendly...lots of fascinating artists. We look forward to our next vacation in the beautiful North Carolina mountains. Thanks so much to the Graces for their assistance and graciousness!

The very fact that we have stayed at "Bear Necessity" three different times should speak volumes. Our first time was in the month of July, 2008. One of our most enduring memories of that summer is watching the 4th of July fireworks from the screened-in deck. You could see the displays from Hendersonville, Fletcher and all over the hillsides in the surrounding areas. The second year we extended our stay to two months, July and August 2009. And in 2011, we stayed from the middle of August until the middle of October. The changing of the leaves was spectacular - each day brought a burst of new color. Our favorite spot at the house was the deck - from early morning coffee to late evening supper - sunrise to sunset - we never tired of the views. We love the surrounding area and one of the things that we enjoyed the most was the hiking trails in nearby Dupont Forest and Pisgah National Forest. There were many quaint shops and restaurants in Hendersonville, Waynesville, Black Mountain and Asheville - always somewhere to visit that was easily accesible. The house was spotlessly clean, the kitchen well stocked and the beds very comfortable. Every contact with the owners was friendly and gracious. We would give a rating of A+ to our stay.

My wife found this property on VROB. What a find! Nestled amongst the trees atop the mountain, a gorgeous view of the valley below, and accessible to so many things. Mt. Pisgah National Forest, Chimney Rock, the Carl Sandberg home, and so much more. Morning coffee on the porch watching the hummingbirds take their breakfast, cool evenings listening to the symphony from the forest critters. It can't get much better than this! The home was clean and comfortable, and the decorations were tasteful and charming (except for the Clemson Tiger Paw ha ha). The owners were gracious and helpful. Highly recommend this property. Hope to return soon; maybe next fall. We enjoyed a wonderful long weekend.

We had a memory-making time in this house. It was much larger than we expected. There is every kind of convenience you can imagine and it is immaculate. We would recommend taking the route to the gate rather than the other route not needing the gate. It is just a very short walk from the gate to the house and the other route is very steep and winding for folks not experienced in driving in the mountains on a regular basis. The house is beautifully decorated with antiques but has very modern conveniences. The decks are spectacular as are the views. We hesitate to write this review as we'd like to keep this place a secret! We plan to return for more memories.

This place was everything we needed - clean, peaceful, fabulous view, close to everything. We left the screen doors open at night since the weather was so pretty and it was great not to hear any traffic! The owners have decorated the home with many antique items and there are several nice touches - blanket on the couch, good DVDs and a book selection all combined with the enjoyment of sitting on that back porch and seeing the mountains in the distance. They also left out several heaters for us in case the weather turned colder which was very nice. We had a nice ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway with the leaves just changing color. Also did the Deep Gap Trail hike from Mount Mitchell - strenuous but the views from the peaks were awesome. Hendersonville is a great little town with some good restaurants as well. We had a fabulous trip to North Carolina and would recommend this home for anyone looking for a peaceful, relaxing stay in the mountains.

                      Why the Owner Chose Hendersonville:
We have been coming to Hendersonville for years with our family and in 1998 decided to look for a vacation home with a year round long range mountain view. It took us over 2 years to find what we consider the perfect place. We spend as much time here as work allows and enjoy sharing it with others.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
We especially enjoy relaxing on the porch/deck as it is so quiet and peaceful with only the sounds of nature and views of the mountains. We love to visit the many nearby festivals/events and restaurants.
