A great find in Piedmont
A great find in Piedmont
Dear Clay, We had a wonderful week at your villa, August 31- September 6. The villa exceeded our expectations in every way. The property was beautiful and the villa was very inviting and so comfortable. The weather was spectacular and we enjoyed relaxing and swimming in the pool. John was very helpful and recommended the beach at Noli which we loved and went to twice. We trust that we left the villa in satisfactory condition. Please either tear up our security deposit check or return it. Sincerely, Karen & Jim Scialabba

Owner response: Dear Karen and Jim, We so enjoyed having you stay at VSL and we are thrilled that you had a wonderful time. We have torn up your security deposit check as you requested. We look forward to seeing you again! Cheers, Tamar and Clay
The Villa is in Northern Italy near Alba and more importantly the small wine town of Barolo. Is spending a week drinking wine really the best idea? Well the short answer is YES and more importantly staying at the Villa San Lorenzo was fantastic. We can't possibly say enough good things about the pasta making class, wine tour, and time spent in the coffee and chocolate shop in Bossolasco. We really enjoyed they layout of the villa which allowed our group of 8 to have privacy and still easily fit into the dinning room for wine, food, and cards. The pool was a great, refreshing afternoon treat for everyone. And the new kitchen was great for chefs to come in to make dinner and utilize the outdoor pizza oven. We should note that our trip was greatly enhanced by the warm hospitality shown to us by John. It wasn't always easy keeping a group of 8 moving in the "right" direction and John handled all of our requests, schedule changes, and random questions with what appeared to be incredible ease.

The perfect Piedmont refuge
The perfect Piedmont refuge
I had the pleasure and privilege of staying at this rental property with a group of 7 other friends and 2 children. This property is a dream - - the perfect refuge for a romantic Italian getaway and/or quality-time group vacation. The layout of the property was perfect to creating a cozy, intimate space for our group to enjoy each other’s company, yet allowed enough space not to not feel on top of one another. We spent a lot of time dining outside or in the newly remade living area, swimming or relaxing by the pool and playing volleyball on the lawn. If you are interested in cooking definitely inquire about the newly finished kitchen which is a dream to cook in. This coupled with the living area attached really made our stay. And, not only are the house and grounds themselves impeccably designed and maintained, but the setting of this property is perfectly situated amid the rolling hills of Piedmont’s breathtaking wine country in relatively close proximity to towns like Barolo, Asti, and Bra and only 45-60 min from Alba. It offers the perfect escape from the beaten path with the convenience of being close enough to key towns of interest. Finally, we had the pleasure of meeting Tamar and Clay, the owners of this property, and their two lovely young daughters which was such a treat. They were wonderful company, offered lots of great recommendations for eating in the area, and even cooked up some of the best focaccia and pizza I’ve ever had in the brick oven that’s located outside! Clay is an international food/wine photographer so they know all the little culinary gems in the area. If I ever make it back to the Piedmont region I will definitely be back!

amazing experience at villa San Lorenzo
amazing experience at villa San Lorenzo
We traveled to Piedmont with 3 other families and spent 5 days in this gorgeous place. First the region – we have traveled in other parts of Italy, but Piedmont has been our favorite. The countryside was picturesque with gorgeous rolling hills, patchwork vineyards and farmland at the foot of the Alps. Imagine Napa on steroids. We had to drive a few hours from Milan where we landed and stopped several times to take pictures of the views. When we got to the Villa we were greeted by the family who owned the villa. Clay and Tamar and their adorable kids were so helpful in pointing us in the right direction to find the perfect bakery, cup of coffee, park or restaurant. This villa and the region have been this families’ passion. They have put their heart and soul into the place and it’s obvious with every turn from the beautiful landscaping (Tamar has a green thumb) to the unbelievable cooking kitchen (Clay is passionate about food and wine). The photos on the site do not do it justice. Even more amazing when we arrived - especially the views. One evening Clay graciously made the best focaccia bread and pizza I have ever tasted in his outside pizza oven. He is a food photographer and you can see his creativity in every corner of the house from the photos to the newly renovated kitchen and loft (that used to be a barn – hard to imagine!). Every evening we played volley ball or soccer in the garden, had wine by the pool, went for long walks and ate amazing food. Our kids had so much fun swimming, hiking, going to the parks, day trips in nearby Alba and relaxing at the villa. If you are a foodie – this is your place. This group of friends have traveled all over the world together and looking back on the week in Piedmont, it was one of the best trips we have taken. Thanks Tamar, Clay, Azalia and Isabel! We had such an amazing time. We can’t wait to come back!

We just had the best Italian vacation and it was in large part due to this gorgeous villa and the unbelievable hospitality of Clay and Tamar. They pointed us to the best local restaurants, wineries, markets and even made our last night very special by making pizzas from scratch in the brick over pizza. The cooking kitchen and the large living/dining space and loft allowed for many wonderful evenings spent with friends, great food and wonderful wine. Would recommend this villa for a truly memorable experience.

Our stay at villa San Lorenzo was, in one word, Amazing! The combination of great food, some of the worlds best wine and rolling hills in the backdrop of the Italian Alps is ideal...the villa is secluded and private atop a hill. The views are to die for and we would recommend watching the sunset over the hills while relaxing by the pool or watching the sunrise over the Italian Alps. There is plenty to do while vacationing at the villa. There are plenty of paths for hikes and runs at the same time there is easy access to the charming Piedmont villages such as Alba or Borolo. The local farmers market in Alba is charming and we found the most amazingly fresh produce to cook a meal back at the villa. The towns and villages also house top Michelin star restaurants and we really enjoyed our meal at the Piazza Duomo. The small local cafes and Trattorias also serve the best pasta and local food. The villa is spacious and easily accommodated 4 couples and kids with enough privacy and space for group activity and dining. It has all the amenities anyone might want from a full-scale gourmet kitchen to a large pool to space for a rowdy game of volleyball or soccer. The villa combined luxury with rustic local charm and has all the modern amenities you might wish for. The owners of the villa made the stay even more memorable. Clay and Tamar are thoughtful, friendly, and very hospitable. We have rented many vacation homes over the years but have never encountered owners like Tamar and Clay. You can rely on them to go the extra mile whether it is share some local intelligence, refer you to some private restaurants that you would have never known about, or even share a meal with you. By the time we left, we considered them our family friends. We would absolutely refer villa San Lorenzo to anyone and plan to go there ourselves again very soon.

Bliss in Alta Langhe
Bliss in Alta Langhe
I spent a long weekend at San Lorenzo to do work in the area with appointments all over the Langa, including nearby La Morra and Dogliani. It's off the beaten track, convenient, private and beautiful. What I loved most about it, besides the deep and comforting tub, water pressure, luxe linens, powerful wireless, and fully equipped kitchen was the silence, the air, the peace, the beauty of the outdoor spaces and the privacy, the ability to come and go without seeing the front desk. If I needed anything John, the manager/tour guide/translator/concierge/magician is there to provide and deliver. He met me in the nearby town and guided me to San Lorenzo, very sweet of him and needed. So, I lacked for nothing in the way of assistance. All of the help of a four-star hotel without the fawning. This suits me perfectly. This most suits the independent-minded. But if you're not, just know that. Pinca can arrange for what you need when you need. The one thing that I kept yearning for was out of Pinca's hands. If only I had a group of friends with me to use that fantastic kitchen and be able to buy the fantastic wines of the region and drink without having to drive--to be there in truffle season and really indulge with friends, this would have been amazing. As it is, I couldn't have been in a better spot for thinking and writing--oh, and in Bossolasco, you will find the most amazing gelato you ever had. Admittedly, I was very sad to leave the place. It became home (or the one I would want.)

Wonderful villa stay
Wonderful villa stay
We were a group of 4 couples staying at VSL for a week in November. The group consisted mostly of restaurant and wine professionals from San Francisco. Our intention was to have a holiday filled with exploring by car during the day and cooking, entertaining and enjoying meals and leisurely evenings. VSL provided the perfect opportunity for this. Upon arriving, Jon met us and provided us with every detail we needed to know. The rooms were all lovely, complete with fluffy white bath robes and wonderful large white fluffy towels. Most of the rooms have clawfoot bathtubs and shower, as well as comfortable beds and flat screen TV (although we ended up rarely turning these on which is a good sign!). We spent most nights cooking either in the kitchen or making excellent use of the outdoor pizza oven. Even in the chill of November, we were able to be outside during the day to sit in the patio chairs and at night to cook. Most of our meals were held in the “hay loft” room where there is a wonderful long table that fits 8 nicely, and even 11 on one night. The room has an excellent stereo which you can play CDs from (of which the house comes with a large selection) or hook up your ipod/iphone and play music from that. On a warm day or evening, the doors of the hayloft open completely as well to provide a feeling of indoor/outdoor dining. The kitchen is open to the living room/dining room and we found it quite suitable for cooking for 8. A bit of a lack of countertop space for prep work, but rumor has it they are working on remodeling a section of the hayloft to be a large kitchen which will be very nice. Even so, we were able to make some great meals in the kitchen and found most all of the tools we needed. And when we were lacking something, Jon was just a phone call away, even bringing us pepper and garlic one night from his own kitchen when we realized we had none and the stores had closed nearby. There was also wonderful stock of wine glasses and decanters, as well as dishes and silverware. The living room area was comfortable and has a small balcony with two chairs which were a great place to read on a sunny morning (even in November!) The property itself also has other outdoor sitting areas and obviously a wonderful pool area that we would have definitely made use of during a warmer time of year. All in all, VSL is a great property and we would return again most definitely. Clay takes great pride in the property and the house, which is clear. And Jon

Way beyond our expectations !!!! We were slightly hesitant before arriving, having originally booked based on the great reviews from past travelers, we weren't quite sure what to expect based on a recent very poor review not long before we were due to have arrived. Clay and Tamar assured us not to panic and that everything had been addressed and that we would find everything the same if not better than the other positive reviews. Easy for them to say!! But since we'd built up quite a rapport with them over the booking period we felt like we knew them well even though we'd never met, Gut feeling said to trust them. They weren't wrong, everything was way better than we originally had hoped for. John met us upon arrival and was a wealth of information throughout our stay, we think of ourselves as independent travelers, but with out his help we wouldn't have seen half the things this region has to offer. We'll definitely be back again in two years time with the rest of the family. Thanks Clay and Tamar for making it all happen.

John Pinca was very attentive and helpful vis a vis our needs and requests. We met his family too, and enjoy knowing them too! He has a flair for his work, and I regard him highly. He is fun to be around, knowledgable and entertaining. Better wireless service would be an improvement. The property was in excellent condition and a pleasure to be in. He was kind and thoughtful during our stay.
