I stayed at the villa for 7 days the last week of February 2012 and it was wonderful. As a chef visiting Piemonte to immerse myself in the local cuisine, it was wonderful after a day of visiting wine producers, restaurants and absorbing the beautiful countryside to return to such a comfortable and peaceful home. I stayed in the daylight lower level apartment which had a fantastic view. Imagine waking every morning to a view of the Alps, magnificent, and so peaceful, I truly slept better than I have in a long time. The apartment itself had everything you could need, roomy, furnished tastefully and very comfortable. The villa has a very modern feel while retaining the rustic charm of the original structure. I had access to the upper level kitchen which I found easy to work in and fully furnished, with a gas stove, coffee pot, espresso machine, and all the pots, pans, plates, and even knives you need to cook. I had the pleasure to use the kitchen to cook for guests while I was there and it was a pleasure to work in. There is even an outdoor wood burning pizza oven! As I was there toward the end of winter I didn’t get to see everything in bloom, but the property is beautiful, with herbs, fruit trees, and even an olive tree growing right within reach. The location of the villa is great too, just a few minutes outside of Dogliani, yet removed enough to be peaceful and private and situated on a hill top that provides an incredible panoramic view of the surrounding countryside but close enough to any road you’ll need to get where you need to go. I look forward to returning to Piemonte, and when I do I plan on staying at the villa again. I heartily recommend it!

We stayed at San Lorenzo the week starting the 29th of October last year, renting a charming double room with bathroom in the building next to the pool but having the run of the large dining kitchen and immense glass fronted living room. This large property is tastefully restored, very well equipped and well heated for an autumn break. It is an absolutely stunning location isolated high on the flank of a ridge. The weather turned humid and cloudy towards the middle of the week but the beautiful autumn hills looked amazing through cloud and mist. I think is one of the most impressive and atmospheric times of year to be in Piedmont ; little or no tourism means you have the undivided attention of restaurants and the winemakers …not to mention it being the truffle season. Being in one of the most important wine growing regions of Italy for me was thrilling and the MacLachan's extensive network of contacts in the region , be it wine or the glorious food, means you get much much more than a cursory reception. These are hosts who really look after you.Visits to Barolo wineries are marvelous. In fact whole thing is.. right down the smallest cup of coffee. I'll be back.

Dear Clay and Tamar, Our two week family vacation at Villa San Lorenzo was as close to perfect as you can get. The house is lovely---beautifully restored, spacious, immaculate, well furnished. The pool, the beautiful grounds and the open views an added plus. Although we have visited Italy many times, this was our first time in Piemonte and it was a revelation. The region is truly beautiful with its vine covered hills and charming towns. It also offers some of the best food and wine I have ever had in Italy. I can't speak highly enough of Massimo and Hanna. They prepared a marvelous dinner for us the day of our arrival and were most helpful in making arrangements and offering suggestions. They are warm, caring people and part of the reason we so much enjoyed our stay. Villa San Lorenzo is truly a gem and I hope to spend time there again.

My girlfriend and I stayed for an unforgettable week in this "new meets old" villa in Buonvicino, a Piedmontese village in Italy...the scenery is still burned in my memory. First we begin with a tour of the lovely and very local and typical village of Doglianni, which boasts a few of the best and most authentic bakeries, fresh pasta shops, butchers and wine shops that I have had the pleasure to see. Not to mention the delicious cappuccino savored on a terraces of this picturesque village. The villa itself is very luxurious, with a swimming pool surrounded by greenery and fragrant lavender flowers, a breathtaking view, very comfortable rooms and dining areas, and an authentic stone pizza oven! Not to mention the very welcoming owners Clay and Tamar who both know a great deal about the area and were very helpful in our discovery of the neighboring region. Anyone who has not seen the rolling hills and the vines or the world famous Barolo country can not know how majestic it is. It was an experience that I hope to repeat as soon as I can and as often as possible, hopefully during truffle season!I highly recommend this villa! Nic from Montreal

My boyfriend and I spent 3 days at Villa San Lorenzo and it was simply amazing! The room was clean and well equipped, the pool large and the temperature just right with a great view on the wine country around us. We are total wine lovers so it was incredible to be so close to the Barolo, Dogliani and Alba DOCGs. We spend some time relaxing pool-side and also went wine tasting at some of the best winemakers of the region. One evening was incredible: they have an old school stone oven and we made our own pizza. It was simply divine. The whole setting is breathtaking. I would definitely recommend it and would go back as soon as possible ! :-)

We thoroughly enjoyed this villa during our stay in April 2011, despite a little rain while we were there. Clay and Tamar were very helpful and gave some great restaurant suggestions – we ended up going to Da Filippo and Il Verso del Ghiottone. Massimo was extremely helpful and ever so friendly as well. One comment I would have to make is that there were an incredible number of ants in the villa. One night, my wife and I woke up to find ants all over our bed – we were in the suite next to the pizza oven. We used bug spray were we could, but the ants were relentless – particularly in the kitchen and bathrooms which we kept as clean as we could to deter them. Other than the ants, we had a terrific time and enjoyed exploring the region - wine and food were terrific.
Owner response:We are so glad that you enjoyed the beauty and serenity of Villa San Lorenzo in Bonvicino. It truly is a special place. Unfortunately an unusually rainy spring caused an increase in the ant population. Luckily, our wonderful property manager was, and is, always on hand to address any issues that might arrive. We were in contact with Massimo during your stay and we know he gave the issue his immediate and undivided attention.

Dear Clay, The stay at your house was an amazing experience for all of us. You did such a great job reconstructing the house. My husband and I travel a lot around the world and we mostly like to rent apartments or houses. Often the photos that you see do not correspond with reality and we end up disappointed. In the case of Vila San Lorenzo, the house looked absolutely amazing on the website and even better in reality, it is a real oasis. Fabio and Christian made a wonderful meal for us and it was a great surprise for my husband. Thank you for arranging that for us. We ended up having our Sunday lunch in their restaurant. Claudio was very helpful, what a sweet man. I also found a great tour guide girl, who took us around the wineries one day and next day she arranged for a truffle hunt. We ended up finding a 240gram truffle, Giorgio who was the hunter was almost crying because this was the biggest truffle he found in 10 years and his dogs biggest ever. We were taken around by a minivan those two days which allowed us to drink wine, relax and have a great time. Over all this was a great trip and all of us would love to come back soon again. Thank you very much Clay and hopefully one day we will meet in person. Please do get in touch with us if you plan on coming to NY! P.&R.

Having just spent a week at Villa San Lorenzo, the beauty and charm of this place still lingers in my mind. The house itself is utterly gorgeous; well designed, immaculately clean, and tastefully furnished with a luxurious quality that makes one feel really pampered. It's authentically old and rustic on the outside, with smashing views of the countryside from literally every window. What was of even greater value, however, was the absolutely wonderful guidance and knowledge of the area provided by the owners. We have never visited this region of Italy before, and they provided us with such amazing information about the area, including wonderful recommendations for dining, shopping and vineyards. They really know and love the region, and made us feel welcome, and confident about experiencing the wonderful treasures in this little corner of the world. Our three small children were made to feel welcome and happy in a relaxed and unfussy way. This is a highly recommended, truly special place. We would definitely love to visit again!

I also want to let you know that Claudio did a great job in advising us on things to see and do, places to eat, wineries etc. He was a great and sympathetic help to us. Best regards Frank

To the owners- Thank you for the best vacation we have ever experienced in Italy. We have been coming to Italy almost every year since 1999, and the region of Piemonte was new to us. Having cycled in Apulia, Basilicata, Campania, Tuscany, Umbria, Lombardy, Veneto and Sicily - we thought we had "seen it all". Not true. The areas in and around Asti, Alba, Bra, Barollo, Bossolasco, Dogliani defy description with their beauty. And since this beautiful area is tucked in between the major roads - there was very little traffic, and many, many cyclists. (Always a good sign). We appreciated the tip to go to Noli, and did so and discovered that beautiful part of the Mediterranean coast. We also had wonderful days exploring Torino and Bra. The villa, obviously restored with great love, was spectacular and your incredible photography added to the ambience of each space. The few things that needed some attention were immediately fixed by Claudio, who is such an accommodating and caring individual. (He has become a special person in our hearts for giving us such special treatment.) Each room was enjoyed by our fellow travelers. The pool was particularly appreciated because of the unusually warm weather in Piemonte last week. In addition, I really loved the kitchens and, assisted by my fellow enthusiasts, were able to make some wonderful meals and eat under the pergola by the pool as the sun set over the Murrazano hills. We especially enjoyed the day you had arranged for us at the Dogliani markets, Chianetti Winery, Osteria Binelli and the Pecchinino and Moscarello wineries. Everyone we spent time with spoke highly of you, and it is clear that the people in this region live their lives with hard work and passion for the things they do and make. We have come away from these experiences ever changed by how life can be simple, yet beautifully complex at the same time. We look forward to returning to this spectacular region of Italy some day soon.

In the past we have had great luck with VRBO but this time is was very different. When we arrived two men showed us around the villa. When we told them it was cold they seem surprised and turned on the heat for us. Since there was no phone I made sure I could contact them through email on his phone if there was an emergency. He said that he would get an email immediately since the phone rings on emails. Well, at 5 AM we woke up early due to jet lag and turned on the TV to watch a tennis match. After a few minutes the power went out and so did the heat. Using my iphone as a flashlight I got the gas stove started for some heat. I sent an email to the guy with the phone telling him our problem with the power and heat and we went back to bed. I woke up about 8 AM to my wife screaming because there were ants in her hair, on her face and all over the bed. Ants were everywhere. The ants were all through our clothes and thousands throughout the bedroom. I sent an urgent email to the guy with the phone and got no response. We spent the next two and a half hours trying to kill ants but it was impossible. What do you do when there are ants everywhere? We had no choice but to leave even though we didn’t have anywhere to go. We had ants coming out of our suitcase and clothes for days. We didn’t get a response from the owner or the man we met the night before until later in the day. The owner will not accept any responsibility and will not refund a penny of our money even though we only spent a few hours there. Additionally, every villa we have ever stayed at was stocked with necessary supplies and had a telephone to contact someone in the event of an emergency. This villa had absolutely nothing and was very sparse looking. What a disappointment for us and our friends and had to experience this on their first trip to Italy. Now we have the inconvenience of small claims court to get our money back.
Owner response:As property owners, we pride ourselves on providing an extremely clean and comfortable Villa. We have poured our heart and soul into renovating and preparing the Villa for our guests and decorating with our guests needs in mind for a spectacular stay in one of the most stunning visually and gastronomically rich areas we have ever been to in the entire world. We have two gentle and kind property managers, Claudio and Massimo. We trust them implicitly and they are two of the kindest and most reliable people we know. Here is a comment from guests who stayed at Villa San Lorenzo and was sent to us via email at the end of June "what made our trip most memorable was Claudio. We returned with a friend from the Piedmont and hope he visits us in the states. Thanks to Claudio our daily agendas were far better than we could have done on our own, he made our stay very special and I’m sure you know what a kind and generous person he is." Outside of the summer months we always turn the heat on one day prior to guests arrival. In the middle of the night on May 16 there was a huge electrical storm which created a power outage at the property between 5am and 11am. We were alerted that the heat was set at 27 degrees (Celsius) and the windows were left open during this storm. Claudio, Massimo, our cleaner Teresa, and electrician Franco, arrived at the Villa at 10:30am. By Noon on Sunday, May 16, the property was cleaned and power had been restored. We corresponded via email directly with the guests between 9-10am on May 16 and assured them we would take care of the issues due to the electrical storm urgently. Claudio and Massimo arrived promptly and with the necessary people to rectify the situation. After 5 years of renting Villa San Lorenzo, it is with great regret to receive comments such as this. Please be assured that we are entirely committed to our guests comfort at Villa San Lorenzo.

Villa San Lorenzo far exceeded our expectations. It was perfect in every aspect. The photographs depicted on the website are an accurate representation of the villa and it's amenities and gave us an excellent idea of what to expect. We were not disappointed when we arrived and saw the villa for ourselves. The outdoor dining area and swimming pool were wonderful. We spent most of our time by the pool enjoying the beautiful surroundings while the kids swam. The pool was very clean and the temperature was just right. We could not have been happier with our experience renting at Villa San Lorenzo!

What a great place to stay. From when we entered, we found that we had everything provided for like as though it is our own home. I looked out the window often as the view was stunning. The hosts were super knowledgeable about the area, and showed us some great places to eat and see. Also, they introduced us to some locals, which added an even more 'local' flavour to our stay. All in all, it was a great experience. The only downside is that we would love to go there more often.

I have just spent a week here with my family and do not hesitate to recommend this beautiful hilltop villa. The views are stunning, the accommodation luxurious and spacious, the hospitality warm and friendly, the food and wine from the region delicious! Not only is it a great location for going out to discover the Piedmont region, heading to the mountains or to the coast, but also for staying in, unwinding and taking it easy. Don't hesitate to ask the owners for recommendations on where to eat and what to drink, they know the region and the people and can ensure you taste the best of Piedmont.

Great food, great wine, great accommodations, great hosts; all added up to a great week in Italy. Our hosts were knowledgeable and gracious, guiding us to the best hill towns, vineyards and restaurants in the area. And at the end of every excursion we returned to our luxurious and comfortable rooms in Bonvicino. After watching the sun set over the vineyards on the opposite ridge, fantastic dinners were only a short drive away. Highly recommended in every way.

I would probably never be able to put in words the amazing piemotese vacation we had. Adoring its wines, cuisine, truffles and charm, we are traveling quite often to this beautiful region. Amazingly, it seems we have finally found the missing link - our "pied a terre" in the region. Clay & Tamar, the owners of a fascinating Villa near Bonvicino, and the Barolo region are an amazing couple. They were so nice as hosts, smiling, caring, well introduced, we felt like coming back home after our long journeys out in the vineyards and villages. the rooms are great, comfortable, spacious, the pool, the pizza oven, the silence, the discussions, did i already say home? I am already planning our visit next year in Piemonte, we will probably visit other wineries, search for new restaurants, but we already have our home.

Our group of three couples stayed here for two weeks, beginning June 16, 2007. It is as beautiful, cosy and rustic as described and the photos on the website are true portrayals of the lovely property. We used this villa/farmhouse as our base, and drove to restaurants and wineries in the area, although it was tempting just to stay here, and rest and relax (and some days we did only that). Among our many enjoyable ventures was a day we spent with the owners as our tour guides, visiting Dogliani and the surrounding countryside. They know the area, the wineries, the restaurants and shops very well, and we took advantage of their intimate knowledge and had a wonderful time.

I loved this place! Its one of those perfect finds a traveler hopes they'll come across. After hiking in one of the most idealic wine regions on earth this villa was the perfect place to unwind. The rooms are luxurious and spacious with breathtaking views of the countryside. Taking in the sunset while soaking in the huge bathtub was magnificent! I was most excited, however by the owners' insider knowledge of the culinary treasures of the region. Their food and wine tours are the closest one can come to being a local gourmet without moving there! I was able to personally meet some of the finest winemakers and chefs in Piemonte and had some of the best meals of my life!

This wonderful house is as portrayed and described. Most comfortable, peaceful, and well-appointed. The owners are a delight to deal with, and as they were there for several days (in another apartment) while we were there, we had the advantage of their expertise on the local scene. Short drive (25 minute) to the Slow Food University headquarters. And we even saw a fox meander by the corner of the house on its way down into the woods.

What a wonderful house. It was so full of rustic charm and so perfectly situated. The comments about relaxing were right on. The house and surrounding property are really a different world, so enjoyable and comfortable. We had such fun exploring the wineries and paths in the surrounding hills. The nearby towns were all different and wonderful, each of them having their own distinct character. Dogliani was an especially neat place with interesting wine bars and great markets and restaurants. All in all, a very unique Italian experience.

My husband and I absolutely loved this beautiful piemontese house! Being an architect, I adored the house's old stones and apparent structure, and it's truly local piemontese character. My husband, who is a chef, was absolutely overwhelmed by the quality and richess of the local ingredients he could cook with. We enjoyed finding them in the market of Dogliani (only 15 min from the house!) and have wonderful romantic dinners in this beautiful excluded house... Nature enlaces it from all over and penetrates the interior through the generous windows in the form of stunning views! It is truly the perfect place to be when you need some time off, some time to yourselves...

I would like to confirm ALL of what was written in a previous positive feedback about the Farmhouse. As described, the farmhouse is quaint, cozy and yet has all needed modern amenities. My favorite part of the house however is the views from the balcony. The farmhouse is perched on a hill so you see the whole valley spread out below you. Very breathtaking. In additon, this was my first visit to Piedmont and I was blown away by the beauty and all the fun things to do within an 1 hour drive of the property. Wineries, beaches, beautiful towns, wonderful restaurants. Basically a great vacation spot!

My spouse, three children and I visited the Piedmont region of Italy to relax and experience life from another perspective. This home helped in everyway. The location is quite, up a dirt road on the side of a hill, and the apartment we were in, a two bedroom, was charming. The stone and craftsmanship were endearing and the renovations that have been done made it a very modern and comfortable place. We enjoyed the view from the balcony, where my wife and I had all our breakfasts as the children slept late. The surrounding area offers some nice villages to visit and the amazing amount of vineyards and wines from the region are too numerous to list. If you want to taste great Italian wines from the people that make them, this is the place. We went to several excellent restaurants and sample some wonderful dishes. Bottom line, highly recommended.

My husband, 5-month old baby, and I recently stayed at this fabulous place and absolutely LOVED it! The view is spectacular, and encompasses the Italian Alps as well as amazing hillside villages and deciduous forests. I was astounded at the bountiful wildlife here; I am a biologist in California and was pleasantly surprised by the amazing diversity of both bird and mammal life! We visited wineries in the region and sampled the world-famous Barolo and Dolcetto wines of the region, as well as some local cheeses and dark chocolate. The house far surpassed our expectations - it was historically quaint, yet had completely remodeled amenities like a stainless steel kitchen and giant bathtub in an immaculate bathroom. We enjoyed espressos on the balcony while looking at the terrific view and listening to the birds. We were in paradise and truly cannot recommend this place enough.
