The cottage is exactly as described in the listing. We had a terrific week in spite of the damp weather (it wasn't cold and we had raingear with us). We enjoyed hikes at Pillsbury State Park and around Monadnock and really enjoyed getting to know that region of NH - Keene and Newport were both highlights. The quiet and isolation at night was welcome and we all rested extremely well. Our dogs and cat had a fabulous time as well. Our cat had never left our house in six years since we brought her home and we were concerned it might be a trauma for her - nothing was further from the truth. She was content in a carrier for the drive up and made her self at home immediately - the top bunk was her preferred napping spot (out of reach of dog noses) and she was really proud of herself on Saturday morning as two field mice corpses appeared to have experienced the predicted rapture that night that everyone else missed.... DirectTV worked throughout and we enjoyed watching VCR and DVD movies, though the DVD player was a bit erratic and required an unplug and restart procedure on several occasions. The sound output level from the DVD player is extremely low. This was a minor, inor problem that didn't really matter much at all to us but may require attention soon. It was a top notch experience all around, we'll definitely recommend it to others, and we are likely to be back in touch we are looking to get away again in the future - we didn't even get to hike Sunapee or canoe on Dodge Pond this time around, for instance.... Finally, the owner Tom is just terrific - responsive, thorough, informative, flexible, and accommodating at every turn. We highly recommend Painted Bear if you want a simple, quiet, enjoyable getaway in a truly beautiful area!
Recommended for:Adventure seekers, sightseeing, pet owners, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, families with young children.
