BERKSHIRE BEAVER LODGE

Come springtime, vibrant orange Baltimore Orioles nest in the willows. A Great Blue Heron returns to the adjacent beaver pond year after year. More than 75 bird species have been spotted on the property, not to mention the occasional snapping turtle. Thanks to a thriving wetland ecosystem, an abundance of frogs and bats--natural predators of the mosquito--keep the pest problem down. The viewing platform for all this wildlife is the southern facing back deck, which also provides a front-row seat for the fall color display on the mountain out back.

A WARM, INVITING HOME

There are countless ways to relax in this house. It's filled with books and music--not only an extensive collection of CDs, but also a Mason & Hamlin grand piano. The kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans, dishes and silverware and begs you to cook in it, and the fireplace warms the winter months (in addition to an oil-burning heating system). Sun lovers will want to lie in the hammock on the deck. And for those times when you must be inside, there's a wireless broadband internet connection.

FIRST-FLOOR MASTER BED AND BATH

with full-size sleigh bed. There's another full bath (with a shower), and two additional bedrooms--one with a single bed and the other full-size. And then in the living room the sofa pulls out into a queen-size bed.

TESTIMONIALS

DG: This place has been the antidote to my life. For times as short as 24 hours, it has provided the necessary respite from my manic, urban lifestyle.

MM: My three-month-old already has a life list.

HH: It is a lovely, wonderful place. We had a marvelous time.

CM: It is good for the head, and the heart. We also marveled at your music collection. A real stunner.

SG: Other than our own properties, this is the most complete rental we have stayed in and we commend you on making this so homey and inviting.

CH: It was lovely....a great setting and very cozy. We enjoyed watching the ducks and egret on Saturday morning.

SN: Thank you so much for renting us your beautiful home! We were amazed at the amenities there (2 of our crowd brought coffee grinders, but didn't need them). Our stay was very enjoyable and cozy. I hope we get to stay there again one day and will definitely be in touch if that is the case.

ST: We had a terrific time at your house and in the Berkshires. It's a very beautiful, tranquil spot.

MT: We had a grand time and loved your home. It was just as you described--tranquil, musical, and peaceful.

Fantastic!

Guest: BostonFamily (Boston)
Date of Stay: 09/02/11 Review Submitted: 09/11/11

My only fear in leaving a glowing review about this beautiful property is that you, dear reader, will snap it up some week when I would like to go back. But as a frequent vrbo-er, I believe great hosts must be rewarded with great reviews. The place was absolutely wonderful. A well-equipped kitchen, nice beds and furniture, and plenty of personal touches. Plenty of extra towels and good blankets and pillows. I could have spent the entire weekend planted on one of the comfortable couches, reading one of the hundreds of great books on the shelf in the living room -- and in fact I enjoyed three novels in three days! Don't stay inside your whole stay, however, because there is plenty to do outside as well. Monument Mountain is a great hike, and if you have little kids like we do, there are easier walks and a couple of playgrounds nearby. The back deck had a great view, and it was a nice peaceful place to enjoy dinner or read. I am not an educated bird watcher, but I can see how the place would be great for that. Oh, and my two year old LOVED the old fashioned dental chair in the living room. What a fun, offbeat touch. Thanks for a wonderful stay at your house!

A great weekend getaway

Guest: An Englishwoman in New York (New York, NY)
Date of Stay: 10/23/10 Review Submitted: 11/04/10

We just went to this house for a long weekend with my parents and our 6-week old daughter. The house was perfect - one big room on the ground floor with plenty of room for our travel crib and easy access to the living room for midnight feeds etc, and two upstairs bedrooms for my parents to spread out and get away from the baby noise. The deck was gorgeous with a great view over the beaver pond, although a bit more outdoor furniture would have come in handy given the fair weather for October we did actually spend quite a bit of time out there. The kitchen was fantastically stocked, the owner clearly leaves extensive supplies which made cooking a lot easier (i.e. things like salt and oil) and the layout and large range oven made cooking for 5 very simple. It's in a great location just off the highway but well out of earshot/view of the traffic. I would definitely come again, we loved it!

Owner response:It was indeed a surprisingly warm October, which has traditionally come after the point when the outdoor furniture gets put away for the season. As the world gets warmer, I'll plan to leave out the deck chairs and all until the first snow!

Family Weekend

Guest: New Jersey Mom (Wyckoff, New Jersey USA)
Date of Stay: 04/16/10 Review Submitted: 04/24/10

This was our first time renting from VRBO. We were five adults and three dogs staying at this house, and the weekend was great! The property is very nice with room in the back for the dogs to run a little. The photos do give a good idea of the scenic surroundings regarding the house. We did do a little bird-watching, and found a book on the bookshelves that helped us identify what we were looking at. This house offers a terrific music library as well asmany, many interesting books. We enjoyed the layout of the house; it is very airy, with a lot of natural light coming in. We found the house to be very clean, no complaints whatsoever. My pre-visit contacts with the owner were helpful, he answered all of our questions quickly via e-mail, and it made the whole process much easier for us as first-timers. The house is located very close to some cute towns, and that made for easy sightseeing. My family visited the Norman Rockwell Museum and enjoyed it very much. We also walked around Great Barrington, found a terrific cheese shop, and stopped off at the Brew House for dinner and their special Chocolate Cake. It was raining so we drove through Stockbridge but did not explore a lot on foot. We would definitely rent this house again, and recommend it for a quiet getaway.
