Mill River house description

This Greek Revival home with a mid-century modern twist is perfect for a couple's romantic getaway, a small family vacation, an artist in need of peace, quiet and inspiration or anyone who just needs a place to get away from it all and totally relax in beautiful surroundings where they have easy access to the magic of the Berkshires.

The space is open feeling, cheerful and sunny with windows in every room.

It boasts a post and beam open kitchen w/ vaulted ceiling and skylight, dishwasher, industrial Dynasty stove/oven, and a round dining table that seats six, along with every appliance and kitchen tool you may need.

The original front part of the house was built in 1850 and legend has it it was once the town Saloon! It boasts an open, spacious living room with original wide-planked floors, a Design Within Reach sofa which pulls out to a Queen bed, a 37' flat screen TV/Direct TV package, CD/DVD player, tuner, an Ipod hook up to speakers and Verizon DSL wifi.

The LR gracefully opens onto a slate-floored, bead boarded sun room/mudroom with lounge chairs, lots of screened windows, and a ceiling fan.

The bathroom has big windows with stained glass art, an antique claw foot bathtub w/ modern rain shower head, antique sink, large windows with stained glass window art, a linen cabinet, and a Miele Washer/Dryer.

And elegant stairway leads upstairs to a guest BR with skylight, vaulted ceiling, closet, comfy double bed, a mid-century modern desk/chair overlooking a view of the backyard and woods, a master BR with curved ceilings, a comfy queen bed, original plank floors, large closet, modern wicker chair, antique federation dresser and eyebrow windows peeking out to greenery all the way around.

Between the two bedrooms is a meditation/reading room with an antique french day bed chock full of pillows for lounging/reading and a meditation area with yoga mats
and a low Asian table.

The house sits on a lovely .05 acre handsomely fenced lot that grades gracefully upward lined with trees and plantings. There is a blue stone patio behind the house with a large Kenmore gas grill, patio furniture seating 4, a stone wall for extra seating as well as a granite bench.

There's a small gurgling creek at the back of the property you can listen to while sitting perched at the top of the property on a tree stump eight foot bench with your feet up on the tree stump ottomans sipping on your beverage of choice. And there's a hammock too.

The house is across the street from the Konkapot River which runs through this old milling town known as Mill River - a quiet, quaint village in the town of New Marlborough. You can walk to the Mill River General Store just down the road, or bike 1.5 miles to Umpachene Falls Park (picture shown). The house is a 5-minute drive to Gedney Farm Southfield General Store, and many great hikes that connect to the Appalachian Trail, about a 10 minute-drive to York Lake, Benedict Pond, Monterey, Sheffiield and Great Barrington (where Butternut Ski Resort is), about 15 minutes to Stockbridge, the Norman Rockwell Museum, Stockbridge Bowl lake, about 25 minutes to Jacob's Pillow, Tanglewood, Cranwell Spa and Resort, Canyon Ranch Spa, Catamount Ski Resort (zip-lining in summer!) and about an hour or so to Williamstown Theater Festival or Mass Moca in North Adams and various cross country ski resorts in MA, VT and NY.

We spent a wonderful weekend in this lovely house. All was as promised by the owner and as expected. This house, which used to be the town saloon, is lovingly renovated and beautifully furnished. No detail is overlooked. Original details are present, along with modern user friendly improvements, and tasteful furnishings. Detailed instructions for house use, at first seemed daunting, but proved accurate, clear, and useful. The owner was helpful and aimed to please. This is a perfect Berkshires location on the main, but quiet street of a sleepy Berkshires village. We would definitely go back again.

Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+.

We stayed at this lovely home over a long ski weekend. With Ski Butternut only 10 minutes away, it was as good as staying on the slopes. The house is in great condition, was extremely clean, and is located in such a quaint town. We cooked in each night, & the house was filled with all the utensils we needed. It was a perfect getaway being so close to NYC, and was a very relaxing place to spend a few days.

Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children.

                  Owner info

                  Year Purchased: 2003

About the owner: I fell in love with the Berkshires coming up to apple pick during fall foliage just a year after moving to NYC from Texas, over 20 years ago. I'd never seen anything like it. I rented homes in different Berkshire towns over several years and finally this house found me, and I bought it. I live and work in NYC with my partner and adopted daughter from Ethiopia. I am a Creative Director/Ecopreneur/Student. I dabble in Reiki and will soon be an aromatherapy student (and who knows what else). I have owned my home for over 10 years now and have truly enjoyed it. I love design, healthy organic food and cooking, yoga, mid-century modern furniture, sunlight and I don't like clutter. When I travel, I like to pack as light as possible (in theory, anyway) and hope to have everything I need or didn't realize I needed available wherever I'm going away to. So you'll find things like yoga mats, a variety of spices and teas, and a juicer at the house. I have been coming to the Berkshires for decades now to reconnect with myself, get back to my center, enjoy and marvel at nature whether it be hiking, skiing, canoeing or hanging in the hammock in the back yard. I am grateful I have been able to have a place to get away from the hustle bustle of NYC where I can surround myself with beauty everywhere I look. I hope that you will enjoy your stay in the Berkshires as much as I do every time I'm there.

Why the Owner Chose Mill River:
I've rented in Tyringham, Egremont and Monterey which are all lovely places, but as soon as I discovered Mill River, it won my heart. Mill River is an old milling town with a river that runs through it. The house is flanked on either side by mountains (big hills, really) so it's in somewhat of protected enclave and the Konkapot River runs just across the street. The house is off the beaten path, but only a few minutes drive from everywhere I love going in the Berkshires. I often hike on any one of the the trails that connect to the Appalachian Trail and visit Umpachene Falls - just a short bike ride from the house, just 1.5 miles away. The Southfield General Store is also just a 5 minute drive away - a great place for brunch or lunch and one of the most well known Berkshire restaurants, The Old Inn on the Green is also in Southfield - lovely if you're in the mood for a nice candlelit meal (no electricity in dining rooms!). I frequent York Lake - also in Southfield and often pack the canoe and a picnic. And also love Lake Garfield in Monterey - an outstanding, big lake for canoeing or kayaking, just a 10 minute drive. The terrain in Mill River is great for biking too -- with enough flat land to make the hills do-able if you're not a serious biker - like me. I love to ski (downhill and cross country) and snowshoe and watch my daughter learn to ski. Being just a 10 minute drive to Butternut and having several cross country resorts within a close radius, makes it easy to be spontaneous. The house is quiet and in the middle of a a quaint village with its own local flavor. You don't have to deal with the traffic of the bigger Berkshire towns during summer, which is a nice plus. And the 2.5 hour drive there from NYC through scenic Millerton, NY and Canaan, CT makes it a pleasant journey there and back.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
I have compiled a list of my favorite hikes, lakes, restaurants and antique stores that I send to those who book my property.
