Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2003

I love my house. It's not your ordinary rental, because this house is my baby and I use it a lot personally. So it's decorated with an artistic sensibility, with comfortable beds. A few choice mid-century pieces combined with ecclectic antiques. Nice colors. And everything you need in a kitchen if you're into cooking. If these kinds of things matter to you, your stay at this house will nurture and lift your spirit.

Why the Owner Chose Mill River

I've rented in Tyringham, Egremont and Sheffield which are all lovely, but as soon as I discovered Mill River, it won my heart over. Off the beaten path but only a few minutes from Great Barrington, Southfield and Sheffield as well as some of my favorite hikes, waterfalls and lakes. The Southfield General Store is a great place for lunch and the Old Inn on the Green is just down the road for a nice meal. The terrain is good for biking -- with enough flat land to make the hills do-able. The drive from Manhattan is scenic, cutting through Millerton, NY and Canaan,Connecticut. Between 2.5 - 3 hours from UWS of Manhattan door to door to this house. I love skiing and being just a 10 minute drive to Butternut makes it easy to be spontaneous. You don't have to deal with the traffic of the bigger Berkshire towns during summer. It's quiet but not secluded entirely, in the middle of a a quaint village with its own local flavor and a short bike or drive to Umpachene Falls, a local, hidden treasure. I included a picture on my profile, as it's one of the reasons I bought my house. Mill River is a somewhat of protected enclave with a river running through it, so it seems not to get as hot in the worst parts of summer or as flooded/cold as it can get in some of the other surrounding Berkshire towns. There is no central air in the house, but the house stays relatively cool most of the summer on its own, apart from a few random, excessively hot days where sleeping downstairs with the windows open and fans running works just fine.

The Unique Benefits of this House

The house and property has such good energy, that it's hard to leave. But when you're ready for an outting, incredible sites and hikes are just a short drive away. Biking and walking around the house is fantastic. You can explore and it's if you know the main roads,(there aren't many) it's hard to get lost. The General Store down the street is in walking distance and adds local color to this quaint village. The Konkapot river runs through the village and wends it's way through the area, and Umpachene Falls is a great place to hang out, just a short walk or bike ride from the house. And if you're lazy, it's 2 minutes by car. Pack a picni and a good book and dip your toes in the rushing mountain water.

We had a lovely weekend in this 1830's Greek Revival "Tavern"

We spent a wonderful weekend in this lovely house. All was as promised by the owner and as expected. This house, which used to be the town saloon, is lovingly renovated and beautifully furnished. No detail is overlooked. Original details are present, along with modern user friendly improvements, and tasteful furnishings. Detailed instructions for house use, at first seemed daunting, but proved accurate, clear, and useful. The owner was helpful and aimed to please. This is a perfect Berkshires location on the main, but quiet street of a sleepy Berkshires village. We would definitely go back again.

Perfect getaway for a quiet ski weekend

Guest: Tim (NYC)
Date of Stay: 03/12/10 Review Submitted: 03/29/11

We stayed at this lovely home over a long ski weekend. With Ski Butternut only 10 minutes away, it was as good as staying on the slopes. The house is in great condition, was extremely clean, and is located in such a quaint town. We cooked in each night, & the house was filled with all the utensils we needed. It was a perfect getaway being so close to NYC, and was a very relaxing place to spend a few days.
