If you are not familiar with Port Orford, it is a very unique coastal community. Founded in 1851, Port Orford is the oldest platted townsite on the Oregon coast and the most westerly city in the continental U.S. Port Orford has spectacular seascapes, uncrowded beaches and an abundance of fresh air and wild winds.
The port of Port Orford is the only natural, open water port for 600 miles and only one of six "dolly" ports in the world. Fishing boats can't be moored in the harbor due to it being unprotected from southerly winds, so the boats are hoisted in and out each day.
Port Orford has a very active artistic community, with many art galleries owned and operated by working artists, including some genuinely world-class talents.
For the outdoor enthusiast, the Port Orford area offers ocean surfing, windsurfing, fishing, boating, hiking, beachcombing, crabbing, clamming and more. Hikers who make it to the top of the three mile trail up Humbug Mountain are rewarded with impressive vistas of the Oregon coast. The hike thru lovely virgin forests includes groves of the rare Port Orford Cedar.
Port Orford is filled with interesting and quirky people, an unhurried atmosphere and no stop lights. It has a unique style and relaxing energy that sets it apart from other coastal communities. |
