In the 19th century, the owner of the Vaulaville castle decided to move in the outbuildings to leave the main house to his newly-married son. She transformed these outbuildings into a second castle and furnished the upper level of the central part to a very high standard. Later, her son's wife put a vampire statue on the façade...

After a busy week in Paris, we wanted to relax and see the D-Day sites around Normandy. The spacious cottage of this 18th century chateau was the perfect spot. Our children enjoyed running all over the grounds and playing on the swings and slide. We also had nightly Ping-Pong tournaments. None of the D-Day sites were more than 30 min from the chateau. Ms. Helen was a gracious and helpful hostess. The chateau has been in her family for generations and she is anxious to share that history while taking you on a tour of the buildings. It is a quiet, beautiful setting where our family enjoyed time together. Highly recommended for families with small or multiple children.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

If you are looking for a convenient location for touring Normandy – this is it. Vaulaville is located perfectly for exploring all of the D-day sights, Bayeux, Caen and even Le Mont St. Michel as a day trip. The area is very scenic and located amongst beautiful villages and farms. The owner of the property is a wonderful host! Marie speaks excellent English and is a great communicator. When we arrived, she took the time to explain everything about the property and even gave us a tour of the main castle which is fascinating and shows the impressive interior and architecture of that time. For those with an interest in World War II, Marie described the impact of the war on her family and the area. Especially interesting was the story of her mother’s participation in the French Résistance and her father’s participation in the Air Force – all of it is remarkable giving you a first-hand account of the events that you will never get from reading a book. We also had many wonderful conversations with her about the history of the area and its attractions. Our kids loved the property. They played ping-pong indoors and bounced for hours on the outdoor trampoline. They also enjoyed reading books from the large library which has both French and English books and media. The entry to the property is beautiful – a long driveway with huge trees on both sides just like you would see in the movies. The outbuilding is quite large and truly has room for 10 guests though the kitchen would likely be too small to cook for that many people. There are cooking supplies, dinnerware, silverware and anything else you might need for stay at home meals. All of the rooms are quite spacious. There was ample storage space for clothes and luggage. The rooms are decorated for the time period as shown in the photos of the property. Currently (March 2013), wireless internet is only available in the Chateau due to the very thick walls typical of the period in which it was built. However, Marie was very accommodating in allowing us to use the internet in the Chateau whenever needed. I believe she is working on a solution to provide full time internet in the outbuilding – you may want to ask her about it if this is very important to you. Marie is a warm, friendly and wonderfully kind person who will really add to your enjoyment of the property. A stay at Vaulaville will give you a true feel of the historic estates located in this part of France.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children.

Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1
