Situated within easy walking distance to Shelter Island’ famous Sunset Beach, this beautiful house has been painstaking restored to its former glory. In addition to a beautiful 46x18 foot pool, the garden offers an outdoor shower, shady pergola dining area, charcoal barbecue, fire pit, front porch with swing, tire swing, vegetable garden, vineyard (perhaps the world's smallest!) children’s wooden playhouse and sand boat. The pool is fully enclosed and secure from the rest of the garden. The entire property is fenced and gated. In addition the garden is surrounded with a deer fence, helping keep the ticks at bay
Location: The house is situated within easy walking distance from both the Heights and Crescent Beach, and thus many of the islands best restaurants and bars, including Sunset Beach and Maison Blanche. For ice- cream lovers, it is a one-minute walk to the island's famous Tuck Shop. It is a two-minute drive/ ten-minute walk to the shops and attractions of the Heights and Dering Harbor, a five-minute drive to the IGA supermarket. post offices, banks, center shops and recycling center.

About the owner: We are an English couple with three children, ages 10, 9 and 6. After 15 years in Manhattan we moved to Litchfield County in NW Connecticut in September 2012.
Why the Owner Chose Shelter Island Heights: Despite having fallen completely in love with Shelter Island, when we bought this property we actually had no intention of buying a house in the US, let alone one on Shelter Island. It was our first summer on Shelter Island and we had been part of a house share four houses further up Menantic Road. Every visit we had walked by our-now house which had a little hand-painted sign hanging outside saying 'Home For Sale By Owner'. On our last weekend of the season, while heading off on a bike ride, I said to my husband, 'Let's just be nosy and go and see what the inside looks like'. We knocked on the door, were given a tour and 45 minutes later made our offer. Two weeks later, having still only paid our 10% deposit, we moved in with nothing but a bed, two garden chairs and a bottle of champagne in the fridge, all left by the wonderful previous owners. While our decision might rank as record low in levels of forethought, In terms of the happiness, pleasure, comfort and fun it has subsequently bought us, it was the best decision we have ever made.
Shelter Island is a unique and magical place to spend time. We believe our house to be a pretty unique home from which to enjoy it.
The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse: Although this is our second home, it is still very much our home and we spend a significant part of the year at the house. As such it is furnished and equipped to a level of comfort and convenience beyond that of a year-round rental property. When we bought the house it had just been beautifully renovated - at least on the surface!. We have spent the preceding years replacing the more prosaic parts of the house- the roof, the well, the septic, the boiler, the electrics etc etc as well as building the pool house and pool. Despite starting with only a few sticks of furniture- and continually having our decorating budget desecrated by the need for working utilities - the house is now beautifully and simply decorated in a way sympathetic to its style and the setting. It is however furnished in a way that can cope with three young children and their friends - slipcovers that wash, surfaces that wipe. The house was completely redecorated in the Fall 2013 and we replaced many of the appliances with new top-of-the-line versions. As a keen cook, and one who frequently cooks for large numbers - the kitchen is equipped with everything all but a top professional chef could hope. Sharp knives, a wide selection of decent pots, a working processor, a KitchenAid mixer, every type of bakeware and enough matching plates and glasses to serve off.
When we bought the property the whole garden was row after row of vines. While only a few of these still remain, the huge advantage of this was the property is completely fenced - so deer out, children in. We replaced the vines with a fenced and hedged pool, an outside dining area and english-style herbaceous landscaping. There is also a tire swing, wooden playhouse and sand boat at the end of the garden. No deer mean that plants - roses, hostas, tulips- which would normally be devoured for breakfast, flourish here. It also means that, combined with the monthly spray, our garden tick population is greatly reduced.
