We stayed 3 evenings at Mika Taki and loved this beautiful house!! It did rain a lot while we were there but I loved hearing the rain and all the coqui (frogs which actually sound like birds chirping). I did use ear plugs at night and had no trouble sleeping. My husband on the other hand liked going to sleep hearing the coqui. The house had everything we needed for a wonderful stay! It was close to Hilo's Farmer's Market (on Saturdays), Waterfalls and other interesting sights. We would definitely stay here again if we are able to get back to the Big Island someday. Jamie, the owner was fantastic to work with! She was responsive, kind and very helpful! Thank you for allowing us to stay at your lovely home!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The home is absolutely gorgeous!! Clearly designed with a lot of thought and attention to detail. With all the beautiful vegetation it feels so private and yet you are so close to everything. I slept so well … falling asleep to the sounds of the "jungle" and/or the rain falling. The owner was very responsive every time I emailed with a question We appreciated all of the suggestions and we really squeezed in a lot!! Visited Volcano National Park, Akaka Falls, the Botanical Gardens and the wonderful Hilo's Farmers Market. Only sorry we were leaving the next day so we couldn't purchase food at the market!! We enjoyed Pesto's Cafe so much for dinner our first night that we returned for lunch one day. I'm not sure where I got the recommendation, but when we were at the Volcano we had lunch in a delightful place: Cafe Ono. Just be aware, the trip down to see the waterfall is perilous ... very narrow, steep slippery path.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3

Date of Comment: October 21, 2012 Jamie & Noi, After being deplaned in Chicago and losing our luggage for 24 hours, we finally arrived at Mika Mizu at 8 pm (where we still had no luggage). The cottage was amazing so nothing else bad that happened all day mattered. It was very clean and very homey. We loved snorkeling in Hilo and each shoreline we stopped, driving around the whole island. Thank you so much for the best experience my husband and I could have ever had on our honeymoon. We very much do not want to go back to reality in the 40 degree below and rainy weather in Wisconsin. Someday we hope to return! Guest city-state/province: Waupun, WIDid you find this review helpful? Date entered: 11/01/2012 Yes, definitely a memorable stay. Your home is gorgeous, and Adan was very responsible for any needs. Each bedroom with its own bathroom was a huge draw and everyone had their privacy or togetherness as desired. Internet connection was great so either laptops, iPad, or smart phones were going. The World Series was occurring during our stay so we made our activities based on the games (of course we're all Giants Fans). Thank you for the crib for our grandson, he slept well, just as we all did to the sounds of the critters. All in all, couldn't have been better. Thank you, aloha! My daughter and her family took me to Mika Taki and we were all even more delighted than we already thought we'd be from the wonderful photos. The home is beautifully furnished, decorated, and fully equipped to meet all your needs. Even though you are a five minute drive from downtown Hilo, you feel like you're off in a private forest. It was relaxing, peaceful, beautiful, and we hesitated even to leave Mika Taki to go sightseeing! My family loved swimming by the waterfall, my son-in-law built a prawn cage and we had bbqued prawns. (He left it there for future guests to use.), I - with horrific insomnia generally - slept better than I have in eons. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay for a month! BTW, we live on Maui - also very beautiful - so if we were that thrilled with Mika Taki it really means something!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.

There were so many things that impressed us... the welcome basket, all the amenities, all the Asian details that give this house a very homey touch. All of us, wished we could stay for a couple of months here, but reality called us and under torture "must" return to our homes in Germany . We take away with us very nice memories from this Hilo visit, particularly, from the jewel of the crown MIKA TAKI. We shall return!!! Date entered: 09/05/2012 Hi Jamie, Just wanted to say how much we enjoyed staying at Mika Taki. Hilo was an unexpected delight – very real, casual, and non-touristy – and our weather was great. The neighborhood of the house was spectacular – like living in the middle of a rain forest but just a short walk to downtown and the waterfront. And the house was beautiful – much more space than we needed, private, very comfortable, and quite special inside and out (4 bedrooms, a bathroom for each, and a waterfall in the back yard!). Hawaii is very far from Ottawa but I’m sure to want to return to the Big Island, Hilo, and Mika Taki. Thanks again for everything! It has been a long time since we had been back to Hilo. We needed to reconnect with family and friends as well as the volcanoes, Akaka Falls, etc. Mika Taki was the perfect place for the visit. So much better than a hotel. I can't begin to list the advantages and the overall experience that we had here. Even when it rained the house is peaceful and comfortable. It has all the amenities and more. The owners are informative and have the logistics well thought out. We will place this at the top of the considerations list when we come back.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My daughter and I spent a glorious week in the house. It is everything and more that the description, pictures and reviews depict! It is definitely magical and the location is wonderful. You feel like you are in a jungle, so remote, yet you are minutes to downtown Hilo. The Japanese motif is beautiful inside and out. I spent many beautiful moments sitting on the deck off of the media room, listening to the river, the birds and the rain fall. It is a place I would like to come back to.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Hilo is an old sugar plantation town and it is on the wet side of the island. There are not many places to stay but the Maki Taki is a luxurious home that the owners have invested an enormous amount. It has 4 bedrooms, 4 private bathrooms, a hot tub, full kitchen with every utensil known to mankind. It is a short walk down to a terrific virtually private waterfall which is swim-able underneath. There are some great excursions on this side of the island and I consider it a must to visit it. The owners are very easy to work with and give a good value. I recommend this beautiful Hilo home without reservation.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Went to the top of Mauna Kea. It just seems like there's way too many stars! Look for the Big Dipper or Orion and they are hard to find because of so many stars. Visitor center has a star talk at 6.30 and then they set up very cool telescopes. The viewing is amazing Jupiter, Moon, Nebula etc... Helicopter ride over volcano - Sweet. Saw sky lights & Flowing lava of hillside of Puulo vent. You can also see it with good binoculars from the end of highway 130. Bring flash lights & good shoes. The WaterFall below the house was really a double waterfall - Take the plunge it's cold but you have a hot shower & hot tub at the top of the walk. Do it! Richardson Beach State Park always fun - millions of turtles. Also saw HI monk seal there. It's at the south end of where 11 & 19 come together. Just by the coast & go south until almost the very end of the road. Snorkeling good there too! Enjoy HI. Aloha! "We'll BE BACK"Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

I base by bookings on reviews, and in most cases feel a responsibility to add my two cents in. In this case it is an honor to write a review for this property. As a vacation property owner / manager and real estate professional, I know what to expect and have very high standards for homes that I book. This property, home and the owners exceeded every expectation. Located in a "real" neighborhood, just outside of Hilo over a little one lane bridge this home gives you the feeling that you are really a local. For the time you are there, you really are home. We arrived a little early, and had the pleasure of meeting the owners, who take exceptional care of their properties and also were so nice. They took the time to talk to us about Hlio, share some of the fruit they had picked from the property and give us some info about the property. Little Louise (the cat aka Kitty or Oreo) was also there to say hello. The waterfall is a bit of a hike to get to, but our 70+ Mum from London was able to make the walk w/ us and we all enjoyed the pool and the waterfall. Louise also joined us on our hike down scampering down the hill and then back up w/ us. Hilo is a WONDERFUL side of the island. I had been discouraged from going by some folks on the Waikoloa side saying that it was lost in time, and the frogs were loud, blah blah blah. I almost did not book, but went with my feeling and went ahead. I am SOOOO glad that I did. I love Hilo, the people and the beauty of this side of the island. It felt real, and not manufactured. It felt comfortable, and welcoming and what I imagine Hawaii should feel like. It is NOT touristy in any way, and they do not allow new hotels to be built, hence the preservation of "old Hawaii" .. Honestly, it is fantastic! If you love nature, walks, shopping local, green/ rainforest feel, beautiful drives, and getting off the tourist path you will love this side of the island too. Start off your Hilo adventures by booking this property, or one of the sister properties owned by the same couple. You will be so glad that you did!Did you find this review helpful? The kitchen is my dream kitchen and that was pretty tough to leave.Everything was sparkling clean and there was a vast array of condiments (all the spices, sauces, olive oil et al really add up when you're buying them all for only a few days of cooking.) These folks have done a wonderful job selecting art throughout the house. There are beautiful hard wood floors and just a wonderful feel to the place. But they're right that it's likely not a kid friendly place. Be aware that the falls and ponds are only accessible via a steep, slippery path (with many warnings and a locked gate.) We have some mobility restructions an were not able to make that climb. The water is not visible directly from the house. You can hear it...just not see it. With that said, that wouldn't stop us for a minute in staying there again. It's a handy location to all of the eastern side of the Island. And Hilo and the Hamakua Coast is a too-often-missed aspect of the Big Island. It's laid back and very 'old Hawaii.' I don't know if the owners are aware of it, but a young black & white kitty has taken up residence in the yard. She's quite charming and was named Oreo by a previous guest (according to the guest book in the living room.) It was actually rather charming to have a welcome committee every time you came home! We picked up where the previous guests had left off and put a bowl of food out in the morning. We found a box of kitten chow there when we arrived and replenished it before we left. Be sure to time your visit so you can shop for fruits, vegies and great local products at the famous Hilo Farmer's Market on Wednesday and Saturday. The Hilo Bay Cafe also turned out to be our new favorite restaurant in Hilo. Located in a strip mall with the Walmart, the food was terrific (nice preparations, local ingredients), it has a full bar, good service and just a very nice dining experience. Good restaurants are still very limited on this side of the island, so take advantage of the house's beautiful kitchen and the excellent KTA supermarket just past the Hilo airport. With the addition of the farmer's market...you're set! Even though this is a big house, there were just two of us. But it didn't feel too big...just luxurious. We had guests for dinner one night and it was a fun place to entertain.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 10/10

The maps were so helpful in locating points of interest. The gardens, patio and hottub were wonderful and enjoyed. We are leaving it (with regret). Mahalo! What a wonderful, wonderful experience we had. Such a beautiful home and so many little touches to make guests fell welcome and taken care of. We had so many feasts prepared in the beautiful kitchen. The waterfall and the hot tubs were definitely enjoyed. And the night time sounds were so peaceful. Probably the best surprise, though, was the beautiful little black and white kitten, who kept us from getting too lonely for our own pets. Many thanks. We are already looking forward to our next visit. guest city-state/province: St. John's, NL CanadaDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Date entered: 08/19/2011 Thank you so much for the gift basket. We enjoyed the coffee through out our stay. The house is a very special place and a destination in itself. Our grand daughter enjoyed the pond. We all loved the hot tub. The tub was especially refreshing after hiking the volcano trails and zip lining.
