A true Dutch Experience

Guest: Steve C.
Date of Stay: 01/29/12 Review Submitted: 02/06/12

You will feel like one of the family after visiting to Fleur d’ Amsterdam. This little bed and breakfast offers a comfortable, home-like ambiance and unmatched hospitality of five friendly and extremely accommodating family members. Fleur, Coen and their three kids will introduce you to cultural experiences not presented by tourist offices or hotel concierges. Over the course of five business trips I have experienced: an unforgettable “Fleur-guided” tour in the countryside on a Dutch bike (via map rather than actual bike), and art/antique auction, several non-touristy neighborhood markets, unique local foods, and a host of other memorable activities. After having returned with such great stories my wife questions if I was really away on business! If it's absolute quiet and a sterile atmosphere you seek stay at a hotel, but if you are on vacation or business and want a feeling of home, true introduction to local culture, knowledgeable tour guide and lifelong friends, give Fleur d’ Amsterdam a try.

A unique Amsterdam a la Fleur

Guest: patrick (USA)
Date of Stay: 09/21/11 Review Submitted: 09/24/11

From the initial email detailing how to get to her place from the central train station to the smile Fleur gave us as we rang the bell, from her laugh that accompanied our first pedal strokes on the bikes she arranged for us to the copious morning breakfasts before we headed to our conference, Fleur has been a wonderful host. When traditionally we would be staying in a city hotel nearby the conference site, this time, we appreciated discovering the Amsterdam way between our sessions. Fleur and Kuhn have been unique and we will definitely come back to laugh with them. This has been by far the best way to enjoy a city during a business trip. Thank you. Patrick.

Perfect stay in Amsterdam

Guest: Jill (Bloomfield)
Date of Stay: 09/13/11 Review Submitted: 10/03/11

Our Amsterdam B&B was a very pleasant part of our trip. I chose it based on the reviews and description on this site. The listing photos accurately reflected our home. The property was very well maintained and the room was clean and tidy........more importantly, our hosts made us very comfortable and were extremely generous with their advice and information about their city. Every morning, over a tasty and filling breakfast, we were able to ask all our questions from the day before. Fleur is an engaging personality with a wonderful upbeat attitude toward her guests and life in general. So, over fresh eggs, bacon, ham, huge wedges of cheese, freshly squeezed orange juice, toasty buns, cherry tomatoes, jam and excellent coffee we learned some history, which museums to visit, how to use the transit system, how legalized marijuana works and a little background about the red light district. We spent 6 days there and would certainly stay there on a future visit. Thanks Fleur and Coen and VRBO!!

Great Place to Stay in Amsterdam

Guest: Robert M. (Vancouver, Canada)
Date of Stay: 08/27/11 Review Submitted: 09/16/11

This B&B is in a nice, quiet area but is easily accessible by bike or tram to the central part of Amsterdam. Fleur is a very friendly person and is helpful about what to see in the city. The extras she provides - fruit basket, wine, chocolates, bikes, etc are very much appreciated. The great breakfasts - eggs, ham, cheese, tomatoes, yogurt, fresh squeezed orange juice, etc provide a good start to the day. The room has a nice bathroom, comfortable beds, tv and wifi. Amsterdam is a wonderful city and we had 6 enjoyable nights at Fleur's B&B.

The Perfect compliment to dense, downtown Amsterdam

Guest: Jeff and Rita (Edina, MN. USA)

A spacious bedroom and really wonderful bathroom were only part of the generosity of Fleur and Coen. They welcomed us into their home and world, sharing so much great advise with us as visitors, as well as sharing of themselves by telling us about their lives. The breakfasts were generous and delicious, and Fleur's gift is hospitality. We loved taking the tram back to their place after the intensity of museums and crowds. We highly recommend this B and B!

You've got family in Amsterdam!

Guest: Clasina (Ontario, Canada)
Date of Stay: 04/28/11 Review Submitted: 05/17/11

You don't know it yet, but you have family in Amsterdam. From the minute you arrive at Fleur's, you're treated like the long-lost cousin! And a treat it is. Fleur and family live in an unusually large house in Amsterdam, in a quiet, safe and green residential neighbourhood with a real feel to it. There are excellent shops and restaurants very nearby. The bustle of central Amsterdam (when you're ready for the action and the insanity) are a short, easy -- and fun -- tram ride away. Fleur's house is warm and inviting in a very artistic, lived-in and casual way. It's home to kids and cats and two relaxed adults, after all. Oh, and I mustn't forget the chickens in the backyard. The guest accommodation is similarly warm and inviting as well as being artistic and absolutely immaculate. Fleur asked us not to invite the cats into the bedroom to protect other guests who might have allergies. So we got our kitty-snuggles in the kitchen. And the kitchen is the site of probably the best breakfast in Amsterdam: meats and cheeses and eggs cooked to order and the most amazing fresh breads! Fleur's coffee is as good as it comes, and will propel you into your busy day. At Fleur's you've got everything you need, and more. An excellent bed (or beds if you want), a modern, striking and spotless black slate bathroom with yummy toiletries, good TV and excellent wifi. The room is full of lovely, thoughtful touches such as guide books, snacks and even some small bottles of wine. My only regret about our stay there was that it was too short. Much too short. But we'd love to go back! My fear is that, having read, and added to, the excellent reviews, Fleur will be fully booked well in advance. But isn't it nice to see family doing so well?

Wonderful B & B

Guest: Joyce (Singapore)
Date of Stay: 03/31/11 Review Submitted: 04/17/11

The location was great, close to the tram stop with tram no. 9 which takes you right to the central train station, various sights, and basically whereever you wanna visit in Amsterdam. The room was spacious and clean, with an awesome shower with hot water 24/7. Breakfast couldnt get better with fresh bread, eggs, selection of cheeses, yogurt. Fleur and her husband Coen were so helpful. They suggested so many day trips for us to see the cheese market, windmills, tulip fields. We spent 10 days at Fleur's B & B, and every single day was pleasant. Highly recommended!

Delightful Host in Amsterdam

Guest: Eagan Traveler (Eagan, MN)
Date of Stay: 10/23/10 Review Submitted: 10/28/10

Staying at Fleur d’ Amsterdam allows you to live the life of a typical Dutch family in their modest home. From the field hockey sticks proudly decorating the radiator in the entryway to the children sitting in the kitchen, you experience the day to day life of this happy family. Fleur is a wealth of knowledge and is happy to provide advice to travelers wanting to see Amsterdam. The children are pleasant and polite to all the guests. If you are accustomed to a typical English B&B with china cups and white doilies, your may want to look elsewhere but if you want a comfortable place to stay with a generous host family in a great part of town, this place should fit the bill. The bedroom is a nice size and with the private bath, you can have your private space to relax after a long day of sightseeing. Local restaurants, parks and shops are steps away from the home on the outskirts of Amsterdam. With almost 95% occupancy, you can understand that people are enjoying the opportunity to experience Amsterdam at Fleur d’ Amsterdam.

Date of Stay: 08/19/10 Review Submitted: 08/26/10

Sandra, Daniele e Caterina.

Hosts give a warm welcome and provide generous hospitality. This was a unique experience for a stay with a family during our European holiday. The setting and room are comfortable. Breakfasts are ample and delicious. There are several excellent restaurants within walking distance. If one wishes a congenial and convivial place to stay, then this B & B, in a familial setting and home-like atmosphere, would meet that criteria. We would return to this location again, although it is outside the central part of Amsterdam. We would recommend this to friends and relatives.

By Far the Best Place to Stay in Amsterdam

Guest: essjay (Vancouver, BC Canada)

My wife and I just stayed a lovely 4 nights at Fleur's retreat. Such a nice home away from home. We felt so welcome; just like we were staying with friends. The room was perfect with a comfy bed, tv, and modern bathroom. Breakfasts were more than you could ask for. Eggs anyway you liked, fresh croissants and breads from the local bakery, freshly squeezed orange juice, yogurt, jam preserves the list goes on. Fluer is such a wealth of knowledge and led us in the right direction each day. She knows Amsterdam inside and out. The highlight for us was having access to two of the B&B bikes. You don't need to take transit, the bikes are way more convienient.

Date of Stay: 05/13/10 Review Submitted: 06/05/11

This review is very late in coming since my daughter and I stayed with Fleur, Coen and their family last May. However, that is a reflection on me and not them. I have stayed in many B & B's over the years and this one is THE BEST! Other reviewers are correct when they say it is like staying with family. This became evident months before when I asked Fleur for suggestions for a place to stay because she was booked. What did she do? Put us in their room, while they bunked in the den! Her tourist advice was spot-on, her generosity overwhelming and her breakfasts....delicious. I usually look for accommodation within walking distance of a city centre. A tram is needed to get anywhere from this B&B but it is more than worth the effort. Fleur, Coen and family were the perfect beginning to our trip and we can't wait to return to them. Oh, yes... and Amsterdam.

Staying with Fleur and her family was a great experience. She and her family are very welcoming, and speak English very well. They make you feel comfortable in their home. Fleur gave us great advice and went above and beyond in making our visit to Amsterdam a memorable experience. The room was very clean and comfortable, with a great big bed, beautifully done modern bathroom, and TV. The treats awaiting us were a welcome surprise. Her breakfasts were delicious and sustained us through the day. Her 2 cats are so friendly too, and reminded us of our own. We had hoped to use Fleur's bikes to explore, but the weather didn't cooperate during our time there. I would highly recommend Fleur d'Amsterdam, and would definitely visit again.

Amsterdam Haven

Guest: Sandy & Ben (Sacramento, California)
Date of Stay: 03/25/10 Review Submitted: 04/27/10

All of the GREAT reviews of Fleur and Coen's place are completely accurate and well-deserved. We just spent a wonderful 10 days being welcomed and hosted by them and their charming children. Every possible effort & kindness was extended to us (including undoing the plumbing when Ben lost his contact) with wonderful cheer. The breakfasts are not to be missed - those whole wheat, seedy croissants were amazing- as were the freshly laid eggs prepared to order - and the fresh squeezed OJ - and Fleur's amazing coffee - as well as pastries, yogurt, lovely Dutch cheeses, ham, & sausage and great conversations. As you eat breakfast and gaze over the wonderful backyard all the while petting a very well-mannered cat (Bamboo and/or Zappa) it is sometimes hard to get going and see the rest of Amsterdam. But this is the perfect base for the city - in a very friendly, safe neighborhood and just a short walk to the frequently running tram (#8) - which whisks you into the center or a pleasant walk to even closer destinations. Fleur was filled with great advice for staging our visit and always interested and willing to hear our plans and adventures. Her suggestions made our trip much more memorable and interesting than if we had kept to our original plans. Their recommendations for local cafes were very helpful. I can still taste the smoked leeks smothered with hollandaise sauce topped with a perfect poached egg accompanied by grilled romaine hearts from one neighborhood bistro – umm! And that is not to mention the amazing foodie, locavore destination, De Kas, which is also in the neighborhood! The room was very nice, including a super-comfortable bed, a desk, tasteful, interesting décor, tv, dvd, and wi-fi. The fresh flowers, fruit, wine, juice, and chocolate were also a gracious touch and just a tiny indication of the level of welcome and comfort we found here. The bathroom was quite pleasant with its ever-present hot water, thick towels, and black slate decor. Whenever we visit Amsterdam, we will be sure to stay at Fleur and Coen's - how could we possibly pass up a chance to spend more time with this charming Dutch family in such a haven as this home????

I would suggest anyone looking to go to Amsterdam stay here. It's a wonderful place. The rooms is great, comfortable bed, and a huge black stone bathroom with a walk in shower, couldn't ask for more. But most importantly the company is great. Fleur and Coen know everything about Amsterdam and the advice they gave made our trip. I'd also recommend getting up for breakfast everyday. Fleur's breakfast, and coffee is the best I've had in a long time. When we go back to Amsterdam Fleur's house is the only place we'll stay.

Just like staying with old friends, and now I hope Fleur and Coen will consider us new friends. I'd certainly choose the same cozy place for another visit. Nice room - simple but ample. Great breakfast. Super advice about places to go & things to see or not to see. The guest bikes were tremendously useful. The location is close enough to everything, and there are several restaurants very nearby that serve excellent food at non-tourist prices, with genuine Amsterdamers having fun there. Nothing flashy about this place... just friendly comfort and convenience.

Before coming to Amsterdam to participate in a scientific conference my colleagues and I were fishing in the Internet for suitable accommodation. Luckily we found a place to our hearts’ content. A set of impressive photos and a welcoming face of the hostess added a final touch to the whole picture. So we stayed at Fleur’s for about ten days and enjoyed every minute there. Wish to see how an ordinary Dutch family live? Want to climb those steep stairs and step back to the past? Never tasted a traditional Dutch breakfast consisted of home eggs, delicious cheese and freshly baked buns served on famous blue Dutch china and flavoured with a friendly “Good morning!” from the hosts? Go to Fleur’s and you shall never think about staying somewhere else! Still hesitating where to go and what to see in Amsterdam? Fleur will give you a helping hand and a map. As for us, thanks to Fleur’s advice we discovered a hidden world just in the heart of Amsterdam and thumbed through a couple of books in the open public library. Having trouble with the public transport system and those tricky tickets? Just ask Fleur for assistance and off you go, free and careless about such trifles. Thinking about practicing your English and dreaming of hearing Dutch? At Fleur’s you will plunge into a bilingual or maybe trilingual (including your own language) environment and perhaps afterwards you will make up your mind to study Dutch or another foreign language. So, as you can see, the enumeration of advantages can last endlessly… So just send Fleur an email and get ready for an unforgettable experience with a taste of fresh cappuccino and home-like atmosphere.

Fleur is also full of good ideas of where to go and what to see, both in Amsterdam and in the wider area.

Fleur and her family are wonderful hosts! It was a pleasure to stay in her B&B and be treated so well. Big delicious breakfasts, excellent hints about things to do that are off the beaten path of tourists and nice company. We visited the Hidden Church and enjoyed it but would not have known about it except for Fleur's suggestion. Also we were able to hear some wonderful chamber music again at Fleur's suggestion. I would highly recommend a stay in her B&B (nice quiet neighborhood, very close to a tram stop)- it was a real treat for me.

We saved Amsterdam for the last leg our our trip through Holland. Staying with Fleur and her family gave us an insider’s view of this wonderful city and a colorful, warm and welcome oasis at the end of each busy day. Located on the edge of the city, but within walking distance to the tram, we appreciated quite nights, a restful garden, the best breakfast of our entire trip and great suggestions for sight seeing and dinining. Fluer was the perfect hostess, making us feel welcome and relaxed. The use of bicycles was an added benefit as just a short distance away is a fabulous park with public gardens. I’m looking forward to my next trip to Amsterdam and will certainly stay with Fleur.

We loved our time in Amsterdam thanks to Fleur and her wonderful bed & breakfast. After quite a bit of traveling through Europe, we were so happy to be in a relaxed and comfortable space that felt like home. Each day started with a magnificent breakfast prepared by Fleur and suggestions for our sightseeing with tips that weren't in our guidebooks. We had bikes to cruise around the city like locals and the neighborhood was a perfect retreat away from the other tourists yet very close to the city center. Very accessible by public transportation, bike or on foot. Fleur and her family were very gracious and hospitable beyond what we expected. Our room was great and we appreciated having a lovely garden to relax in as well. This was a perfect ending to our vacation and we looking forward to returning. Thank you Fleur!

Excellent experience staying in a quiet neighborhood close to public transportation (trams, busses) with easy access to Central Station and the museum district. Wonderful breakfast with Fluer and Coen with time to discuss museums, attractions, tram routes and plan your day. Spend a day on bicycles (provided) exploring the neighborhood, visiting local gardens and eating and sampling at the numerous local cafes, resturants, & pubs. Very modern, private bath with large shower, on ground floor. Relax in the backyard garden. The quiet neighborhood was a perfect retreat after a busy day in bustling Amsterdam.
