This superb 1908 Edwardian single-family 3-bedroom house, with panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and a beautiful south-facing garden, offers the quintessential San Francisco experience in the best neighborhood in the city. Watch the sun set over the Golden Gate Bridge from the 3rd-floor deck, or relax to the sound of the Italian fountain in the lovely, sun-drenched garden. Walk out your door and you're on a peaceful, pretty street on famous Nob Hill in the historic heart of the city, just a half block from the Hyde St. cable car line that runs down to the Bay.

This beautifully restored and furnished home, 2000 light-filled square feet, sleeps five or six people. It is one of the few single-family houses on Nob Hill. It has three stories: On the first floor is an elegantly furnished living room with a gas fireplace, two couches, an oversized chair and built-in bookcases. Next to that and separated by a pocket door is a comfortable family room with a voluptuous sectional couch and a custom entertainment center with a high-end stereo, a 42-inch HD LCD TV, and a huge collection of DVDs, CDs and LPs. Beyond is a luxurious oversized country kitchen, featuring hardwood floors, granite counters, a Dynasty stove, sponge-painted walls, Italian-style open shelving and all the necessities for serious cooking. Flooded with light from large western windows as well as a south-facing window and French door, this is a unique place to cook and eat. A Spanish refectory-style table seats six easily. There is a half-bath off the hall. All of the floors on the first floor are hardwood, with beautiful Afgan and Turkish rugs. Furnishings throughout are both comfortable and elegant. There are many charming Edwardian features, like anaglypta wallpaper and other original details.

The second floor has three bedrooms (one with a queen bed, one with a double and one a single), an office and a full bathroom with clawfoot tub and shower. Through the third bedroom a French door opens onto a large, very sunny south-facing deck. This deck gets almost no wind; on even a mildly sunny day it is warm enough to sunbathe, which in San Francisco is a serious bonus. There is a skylight above the landing and beautiful softwood floors.

From the second-floor deck a spiral stair ascends to the roof deck and office. The book-filled office has oversized windows that look out west to a stunning view of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Marin Headlands and Mt. Tamalpais. Outside the office is a deck with comfortable chairs and an excellent stereo, from which you can look out at the end of the continent. A mini-refrigerator stashes your champagne.

The warm garden is south-facing, and in summer gets sun almost all day. It features a large camellia tree and a large orange tree at the south end, as well as roses, bougainvillea, jasmine and other flowers and shrubs. The working Italian fountain on the eastern wall faces a fire pit. There are wrought-iron patio chairs and a table, as well as an outdoor stereo, for al fresco dining or entertaining.

There is a full bathroom and a washer and dryer, as well as a cross-trainer exercise machine, in the basement. There is a reserved parking spot half a block away. The house has broadband access and Platinum Digital Cable. (There are TVs in the family room and the master bedroom.) It also has an enormous library. All sheets, towels and linens are included.

The house has an unbeatable central location on the desirable north slope of Nob Hill, just a ten-minute walk from the swanky hotels on top of Nob Hill and a ten-minute walk in the other direction from the top of Russian Hill, San Francisco's most beautiful neighborhood and home to the famous "crooked street," Lombard. This is one of the great European-style neighborhoods in the country, with views of the city from almost every corner. Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, Chinatown and Pier 39 are all an easy walk away. Great restaurants, including the highly-rated 1550 Hyde and the Ristorante Milano, are a block away; there is a charming sidewalk cafe on the corner. Four beautiful parks are each a 10-minute walk away. A major shopping street with everything is one and a half blocks away. There is a corner market a few steps away. The public transportation is excellent.

The owners, two writers, also include a personally written guide to the world-famous neighborhood they have lived in for 25 years, including a detailed description of four great walks and a guide to restaurants, bars, parks, and other attractions in the area.

Despite being in the heart of the city, the neighborhood is very quiet, peaceful and safe. You can faintly hear the cable car bells ring in the distance as you relax in the garden, and hear the sounds of the city rise up as you look out from the top deck at the waves breaking on the Marin coast.

The house will comfortably sleep a family of 4, or two couples and a child. A sixth person, or a third couple, can be accommodated on a very comfortable thick foam futon which can be placed in the private front parlor.

PLEASE NOTE: The house is ONLY available from July 14 to July 21, 2009. The rent is $2200.00, plus a $120 cleaning fee. If you would like to feed our three amiable, low-maintenance cats, we will offer a $300 discount. (If you want to go out of town, no problem -- our friend, who will also be available to help if you have any problems, can feed them while you're gone.) A security deposit and references are required.
