Nice Place with some Downsides

As my wife and I arrived at the Guest Homes this October, the first thing we noticed was that the advertisement of "at" the Russian River was not the same as "on" the river. My vision of a nice deck overlooking the river quickly faded as I realized the complex is about 3 blocks from the river, set in a stand of redwoods with a large hill to the south. While nice and shady in the summer, this meant only about an hour of direct sun in the fall and temperatures about 10 degrees less than a few blocks away. The inside decor of the Homes looks just like the pictures -- tastefully done and comfortable. The beds were very supportive, there were decent appliances in the kitchen, good off street parking and a kids play area across the way. There are a few downsides, however, that might be tolerable for a weekend stay but that tend to be less so for a longer visit. The knives, silverware and dishes are very cheap and almost a danger to use (one knife exploded in my hand). The cookware is minimal and we were missing tops to some of the pans. Several lights were burned out and never did get replaced despite our calls to the landlord. The bbq on the deck was on its last legs with a burner that spewed yellow flames. There was no stereo (as advertised), no placemats or napkins, no books or info on the area, no trash bags, no clocks (even bedside), and not even a wine opener. The cable TV had a very basic selection and 2/3 of the channels were public access or sales. No ESPN, CNN or anything beyond the 3 networks. The remote was held together with duct tape and several of the buttons no longer worked. I hate to go on, but the faucets were loose and/or crooked, the bathroom towels were the thinnest I've ever felt, the handles and hinges on many of the cabinets were loose or broken, and the internet was often agonizingly slow. The neighborhood in general was fairly quiet, although mornings sometimes brought barking dogs and occasional chain saws. For the price, these duplexes are a reasonable deal and very spacious. Just be aware that some of the details are a bit disappointing. All in all, it felt like the Homes were well built but then outfitted on a tight budget, and the low quality is starting to show after only a few years of use.

Great Mother/Daughter Weekend!

A few of us mom's stayed her with our daughters for our annual mother/daughter weekend. The property is beautiful and just as described. The townhouse is very spacious, clean and up-to-date with nice granite counter tops and nice stone tiles in the bathroom. All the bathrooms have heaters which make it so nice when you get out of the shower in the cold weather. All the light switches are labeled and everything is in perfect order. The hottub was very nice and even though we had to share it with the property next door we never wanted to use it at the same time. I was attracted to this place because of the reasonable rates, no cleaning fees and/or additional deposit. The check-in and out process is so easy (just get and return the key via a lockbox). I also worked with a very nice lady to book my reservation. I would definitely come back to visit here so the rest of the family can exerience this place and the other sights that are very close (russian river beach area and redwood state park).

We stayed at the Balalaika guest homes in August 2007 for one week during Vineman Triathlon and had a spectacular time. The guest home is just beautiful and became our home away from home. We were sad to leave, but will definitely be back. We highly recommend this to anyone. The owner is wonderful as well and very accommodating!!

We stayed at Balalaika for 7 days in Sept. 2006 and were very happy with the facilities and the comfort of the accommodations. So much so that we made reservations to go there again on our anniversary the first week in March 2007. Very romantic surroundings!!! Carl & Virginia Schimmel Salt Lake City
