Welcome to Connemara Rentals- We own and operate individual, unique and luxurious holiday/vacation homes in Clifden, the capital of Connemara. Each property has been lovingly built or renovated by us over the years -set in their own grounds and gardens- offering private and quiet locations within a stones throw of the town. Finished to the highest standard aimed at discerning guests who are seeking unique properties and awarded the highest grading by Failte Ireland - the Irish Tourist Board.

SUNNYBANK HOUSE

A smart country estate house originally built in circa 1820, sympathetically renovated and designed to give a comfortable and homely holiday experience for larger groups, family gatherings or friends, and host to Chelsea Clinton during her tour of Ireland.

Within the grounds are mature gardens, ample parking, a large pool/barbecue terrace and outdoor seating areas providing a self contained estate, while the property is situated only 2 mins walk to the town square.

All 11 bedrooms are uniquely decorated and are all en suite. The extensive ground floor living area gives enough room for everyone to relax without being on top of each other, whether it is in the main drawing room with large turf fire, the library, the television room with large turf fire, the dining room or kitchen. An ideal base for exploring Connemara, with walks on the numerous stunning local beaches or in the most scenic countryside you are likely to encounter, or wandering to the local pub for a quiet pint or traditional irish music.

**Your stay includes complimentary use of the nearby private leisure centre - 3 mins walk from the house. WIFI throughout.

Our aim is to provide a luxurious home away from home. When you arrive you will find the house fully set up, warm and cosy with fires lighting, and a welcome pack. ***** A LITTLE HISTORY******

The O’Grady Family purchased the Sunnybank estate in 1977. One of the oldest buildings in the locality, the Main House was built by John D’arcy who founded Clifden town in 1823. During 2002, Sunnybank House was extensively renovated into a luxurious holiday property and offers an outstanding holiday experience for larger groups with a private outdoor heated pool, sauna, extensive gardens.

We purchased Sunnybank Cottage ( a neighbouring property) in 2004. It is a listed building and again one of the original houses of the town. It was completely renovated whilst retaining all the best of its original features and is now a luxurious and cosy version of the original cottage with the best of modern conveniences.

The houses are furnished with a mix of antique or old country furniture, with the best quality of fixtures and fittings, bedding and household appliances. Each winter we spend time maintaining, improving or adding to each property in order to maintain standards.... We hope you enjoy !

**** CLIFDEN TOWN****

Clifden Town is the capital of Connemara one of the most scenic regions in Ireland. Established in the early 1800’s at Clifden Bay, it follows the classic 19th century layout: oval in plan, with 3 principal streets – Market Street, Main Street and Bridge Street, a Market Square, a fine bridewell or gaol, courthouse and harbour.

Clifden today is a vibrant and cultural town which has retained its historic roots while offering a wide range of services and facilities. You will find colourful streets with a great selection of small local food shops – (fishmongers, butchers, fruit and vegetable store, delicatessens and a bakery), numerous craft and gift shops, art galleries and exhibitions and other interesting shops including antique shops, designer clothes shops, jewellery and vintage shops.
There are 9 restaurants and 10 pubs with music sessions each evening and good bar food.On the practical side there are four supermarkets, including Aldi and Lidl, which are open until 9pm (mon-sat), two banks, three chemists, two petrol stations, two churches and a post office.

Set on the edge of the Atlantic, the surrounding scenery is spectacular, and waiting to be discovered.

*****CONNEMARA******

A vast coastal region world renowned for its wild and stunning scenery, and magical light. It is dotted with small villages and historical sites. To the north is stretches to the border of Mayo and the town of Westport is 45 mins. drive from Clifden. To the east it reaches to Galway city, which is one hours drive from Clifden and well worth a visit. To the south is the Connemara Gaelteacht area- an Irish speaking area which is famous for its coral strands.

What a fab place to stay. Shane had the fire lit and a lovely welcome pack of treats when we arrived. The house feels like home even though its huge. Our families had plenty of space to stretch out. The children loved paying hide and seek and the grown ups loved just relaxing. The house is very clean with all modern conveniences including an ice maker. We had our wedding week long celebration here and it exceeded our expectations. Gillian catered for us and everyone raved about the food. I loved the special effort she made for my fussy vegetarian needs. I'm told the lamb was amazing. We highly recommend this beautiful house in a very special location as a wonderful backdrop for lifelong happy memories.

20 of my best friends and family members from all over the US, Ireland and the UK convened in Clifden at Sunnybank House and Lodge to celebrate my birthday and that of my duaghter's father in law. Having been to Ireland before we thought we knew what to expect but Sunnybank exceeded all of our expectations. From booking imquiries right up to checking out Shane O'Grady, who we dubbed "The hardest working man in Galway" was as efficient and helpful as anyone could hope for. The property itself is just about perfect for a crew like ours. Each bedroom was lovely and comfortable. The kitchen, what a kitchen ! Feeding the lot of us was a breeze, Shane recommended a boat captain who took us out to the sea where we caught more than enough fish to feed us all a couple of times over. Directly from the sea through the kitchen and into the dining room and voila a meal that will be remembered for a long time. But the Fiesta mas grande was when Gillian came in and took over the kitchen to cook up delicious Irish feast for us. A short stroll of a couple of blocks and you're into town for shopping or just hanging around beautiful Clifden . Getting to Kylemore Abbey, Galway town and the Aran Islands is easy from there. Somehow Shane was able to order up a week of sunshine for us so we could swim in the pool every day. I have polled my constituency about our stay for this review and the results are unanimous. We love this place!!

We booked Sunny bank house for our wedding at the start of May 2011. On arrival in the house we were blown away. Believe me when I say that the pictures of this house do not do it justice. We had 15 People staying in the house and it really felt like a home not just a rental. As a wedding venue we could not have asked for more. As a holiday home it is exquisite. On arrival Shane had the fires lit and some goodies for us to nibble. I would recommend this home to anyone who is looking for a truly amazing space and memories that will not soon be forgotten. Thank you for a wonderful time.

When I found Sunnybank House online, I thought it was too good to be true. The photos and information on the website were informative and very accurate. Even after copious emails back and forth to the owners, they were constantly helpful and gracious. After the weary drive to the house, nothing could have prepared me- fires were lighting, lamps were glowing and survival necessities were in the kitchen, perfection! My previous experiences of renting a house for the weekend would be arriving to a freezing house and an empty sad looking fridge. Shane happily welcomed all 22 of us to our new home and left us to it. Bedrooms were pristine, all ensuite, and towels and sheets were in abundance. We availed of the catering service one evening. Gillian was a pleasure, cooking up the most delicious meal and leaving the left-overs for our midnight snack! I have not stopped raving about this house for a large group week away, it was the perfect rental. We also went to Killary Adventure Centre for an afternoon of activities which was only a 30 minute drive away. I will definately be back to Sunnybank House, it is in a beautiful part of the country, and located right in Clifden.

Every year my wife and I join a re-union with my old university friends and their wives. This year it was our turn to host the event. We are now in our 60's and have a wide variety of interests, but particularly like to eat and drink well. We chose Clifden because of the amenities and Sunnybank House because it seemed to offer style and comfort for a large party - in our case 11 couples. We were not disappointed in any way by either location or accommodation. Sunnybank House was very centrally located for the town , was very well appointed with lots of attention to detail and proved both spacious and comfortable. We were able to dine in the house- which we did most nights - and the cooking facilities were excellent. There was also good waste disposal facilities which we needed particularly for the large quantity of empty wine bottles! The weather was good so our group may good use of the swimming pool - which was heated to a nice temperature for us old fogies -and the tennis court. There was also a sauna available, but we did not make much use of that. The computer facilities too were very useful for those who wanted to stay in touch with home or find things to do – although there was a good deal of information available in leaflets in the house. The surrounding area was also fantastic. We enjoyed the golfing at Ballyconneely, walking and visiting the local centres of interest (such as Kylemore, Connemara National Park, Killary) and my grand-daughter really loved riding at Ballyconneely. We were blessed with very good weather and this certainly enhanced our stay and particularly our appreciation of the beauty of the beaches and mountains. The highlight for many was the day trip we took to Inishbofin. But there was plenty to do if the weather had not been so kind and the membership of the local leisure centre would have been used more if necessary. Some of our keep-fit fanatic friends certainly found the gym very good. We also ate and drank in the town and found the local pubs and restaurants to be of high quality - and the traditional music provided was first rate. All in all, everyone had a great time and our visitors – all from overseas, and some in the tourist business – were very impressed with the west of Ireland, Clifden and Sunnybank House in particular. The cost for such a large party worked out to be very inexpensive, certainly much less than a hotel and in our opinion more suitable as we had plenty of space and freedom.

This house was the perfect location to spend my birthday with family and friends! We had 23 people off and on over 2 weeks and the house never felt crowded. The bedrooms were spacious and well-equipped. The kitchen was great as was the rest of the house. It was elegant but not stuffy. We cooked several meals in but if we didn't want to, it was a 2 minute walk to the cutest town to wonderful restaurtants and pubs for breakfast, lunch or dinner. You can find good music in the town every night. Very friendly town and a most gracious and accommodating host in Shane O'Grady. Everything was taken care of and if any problems arose they were handled immediately. He really went the extra mile! For the birthday evening, we had Gillian cook a fabulous dinner and dessert and then two local artists from the town came up and played for us. Shane helped arrange it all. It was absolutely the highlight of the trip. This is also a wonderful location to be able to make lots of day trips to beautiful sights; the abbey, the ocean the quaint little towns. We cycled, climbed mountains etc. Can't wait to go back!!!

We got married in Clifden at the end of August this year, and having stayed in Seaside Cottage, one of Shane and Rachel's other properties, earlier in the year, we decided to rent each of the houses at Sunnybank for friends and family. We all arrived on Saturday afternoon after a long trip to find Shane there to welcome us. He knew all about the wedding and from our arrival couldn't do enough to assist. The house was spotless, huge, beautiful - plus the fire was on and he'd left us some lovely things to eat and drink (wine, fruit, smoked salmon etc) in the kitchen. Everyone that stayed couldn't get over the decor in the houses, each is absolutely dead on. There are all the modern amenities in the houses. There's lots of space outside, the garden is lovely and really well maintained...it was great having the heated pool sauna and tennis courts for all the children - plus Sunnybank is a 2 minute walk down the hill to the centre of town. Guy's Bar is the nicest bar with the best food, EJ Kings is great to sit outside on a nice day too. Our favourite beach in the area was alongside Connemara Golf Course, about 15 mins drive. Apparently the course if great too but the beach was beautiful - white sand, dead calm crystal clear water, rocks and horse riding down the road, we went swimming. The day of our wedding we actually just had everybody back to the big house for a bite to eat (tShane put us in touch with the cook Gillian, she is highly recommended we're all still talking about her dishes!) and speeches in the living room. It was really perfect for us. The whole weekend was perfect for us really - the pictures on the website are great for showing the size and decor of the houses so check them out. Obviously the houses wouldn't be classed as budget accomodation but for the location, quality, size, and 'customer service' (you don't feel like a 'customer' really) you receive I think the houses are bang on price-wise - really worth the money, plus I think I saw some discount vouchers for Guy's Bar in one of the houses so ask about that...Clifden itself is great craic with really friendly tourists, good mix of bars, close to beaches and places like Kylemore Abbey - and Connemara is the most beautiful scenic part of Ireland in my view, the lakes, the colours and scope of the landscape are pretty breathtaking, you get a great view of this when driving from Galway to the town. We're already planning on returning for my Dad's 70th next year. Honestly - faultless!

This is a great spot for a family or friends holiday. We (the extended family and friends) spent a week there and had a great time. It's a huge house with plenty of room. Loads of living rooms, two big open fires and decent size bedrooms all with their own bathrooms. There is a tennis court, sauna and a pool (which wasnt in use when we were there). All very well kept We could walk down to the town square in a minute for shopping or pints. Good choice of pubs and live music. The owners have a Pub downtown and we had lunch there nearly everyday, very good fish and chips!. Its a really nice town, we all enjoyed it, The elders went sightseeing to Kylemore Abbey and the Killary Fjord, while we wandered the local beaches... and pubs . Oh, and we went to a show in the local theatre, hilarious. This doubles as a cinema as well ! Would recommend for a group or family, very comfortable and smart without being overly formal.

My sisters arranged a surprise 30th birthday party for me in Clifden a few months ago, the venue was perfect, it being close to both beautiful walks and the buzz of Clifdens nightlife. We all had an amazing time, I'll never forget it. Our host Shane made the most delicious cocktails and we had a wonderful cook one evening by the name of Gillian, I'll never forget her roast chicken!

At last we have found a home away from home that does not feel like rented accommodation with top quality beds, comfortable sofas and full of character.

                                          Why the Owner Chose Clifden:
“An Absolutely Accommodating Place!” - Guest review August 2012 My extended family of 28 members recently returned from our dream trip to Ireland. We spent a week in Clifden renting both Sunnybank House and Lodge. It was so good that we found a place where we could all stay together and the location of Sunnybank is ideal. It is just a few minutes walk right into town and everyday we were able to make excursions out in the surrounding areas and easily return to Sunnybank so it was a great central location to stay in to tour the area. We were met by Shane who turned out to be the most accommodating host you can imagine answering all our questions and helping us with anything that came up. He arranged for my 81 year old Father and my brothers to play in Guy's Pub several evenings and this was an experience of a lifetime for my Father. We will forever be thankful to Shane for making that happen. The accommodations were wonderful, fully equipped kitchens, beautiful decor, inviting outside areas, and comfortable bedrooms. If you are traveling with a group this is a perfect location even if you have little ones. They provided us with highchairs and baby cots as we had 3 babies in our group. We used the kitchens quite a bit as we prepared breakfast every morning and cooked out a couple of nights using the outdoor grill. We also availed ourselves of having a local person, Gillian, prepare us a meal one evening that was quite delicious. We had been out touring all day and it was wonderful to arrive back and smell the meal she had prepared for us. All in all, I have to say that Sunnybank is one of the most accommodating places that I have stayed of all my trips to Europe. My family and I very much enjoyed our stay there and I would highly recommend Sunnybank House and Lodge! Thank you Shane for everything!

The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
“The Perfect Place to Call Home in Ireland” - Guest review - June 2012 I cannot say enough about how wonderful a time my family (21 in total between two houses) had staying at Sunnybank House. The space is amazing... beautiful and welcoming. Shane and Rachael are so helpful and there is nothing to want for in this gorgeous house. The kitchen and expansive dining table were perfect for the nights in. The area is perfect for all ages. The proximity to the town for a nightly pub crawl made it really feel like home. It's just a place to return to again and again as the people of Clifden and the spectacular environment are not to be missed. We really hated to leave. “Complete Connemara luxury!” Guest review May 2012 We held our wedding in Sunnybank House, we stayed for the May bank holiday weekend with our family and we couldn't recommend it highly enough. It was the perfect venue for our special day and our family and friends were blown away by it's luxury and uniqueness. Shane the owner was the perfect host and it's location right in the heart of Clifden was excellent. We were sad to leave and definitely hope to return one day! A truly memorable stay
