My husband and I rented this unit for a week for our 25th wedding anniversary. We saved up a long time to go to Hawaii and wanted this trip alone away from our 6 kids to be very special. We wanted to be on the ocean...have a terrific view...be within walking distance to stores and food if we needed it...close to excursions...and to have snorkeling. We had everything and more. The description of the condo and facilities is extremely accurate. It is spacious and decorated very classy and very clean, which is important to us. It had everything we needed. We chose to go to the grocery store nearby and eat our meals in as we wanted to be alone. There are 2 huge gas grills by the pool area, which we used. My husband was amazed how spotless and clean they were each time he grilled. While he grilled - I often sat in the hot tub and swam in the pool (the pool by the way is wonderfully warm). There is also a cabana with a full kitchen, ping-pong table, books, bathroom if you need it when you are in the pool area so you don't have to go back to your condo. The grounds are meticulous and beautiful - very well maintained. Even the elevators smelled clean and fresh. The view from our lanai - fantastic. The very first day we saw whales. The sound of the waves crashing on shore was great and lulled us to sleep every night. We chose to sleep on the lanai couch, which pulled out into the most comfortable bed. There were never any noisy neighbors...it was peaceful...relaxed, and we were able to spend quality time alone - just like we wanted. The location is really prime center location for day trips for sightseeing (the road to Hana is a must-do). We also traveled all along the coastline and saw the rugged majestic beauty of the ocean and rocky cliffs...black sand beaches...surfing...volcanic rock...lush tropical landscapes. It was truly paradise that we had never seen and experienced before living in Michigan. My husband and I both commented frequently what a relaxed atmosphere the whole island had. While busy in some parts - everyone was polite...driving the speed limit...no road rage like we experience here at home where everyone is in a rush. We would love to come back again and wouldn't stay anywhere else. Thank you Charlie and Jennifer for the use of your condo - we had a little piece of heaven for a week and will treasure this second honeymoon!

Wonderful Holiday

This was our third consecutive January holiday staying in this unit. Once again it did not disappoint. The room was as we remembered and the view was outstanding. It is not only the location and the room, but it is the people who holiday there. We have met so many nice people from all over North America. We travelled to the Maui Kai with another couple, and they as well have booked for next year, as we have again. This was my sixth trip to Maui but my first stay at Maui Kai I stayed here at this wonderful property for 6 nights in October 2011. The condo is very spacious and so well equipped and very clean - very comfortable king size bed and excellent kitchen facilities. The location of the resort is perfect a short drive to Lahaina and walking distance to a supermarket you couldnt ask for more. The view - well it is absolutely spectacular - you are so close to the ocean it is amazing. Sitting on the lanai with a vino in hand was truly wonderful - the sunsets were awesome. The resort is well maintained - go down to the pool and meet your neighbours everyone was so lovely -I was travelling on my own and felt very secure and the resort staff very nice too. The owners Jennifer and Charlie were lovely and so helpful with all the booking arrangements Thank you for the use of your condo I loved it!

Really happy with this condo

I stayed in this condo from May 22 through May 28, 2011. We had two adults and two kids. The condo has a bedroom with a King size bed that was comfortable. The living area has a fold out couch bed and the lanai also has a fold out couch bed. The view was as good as it gets. The lanai was very nice with glass doors, screens, and shades to keep the heat down in the late afternoon. The pool was noice too. The only issue was it was a little inconvienient to use the lock box key, however a key was provided for access to the room and pool area but the owners discourage you taking that key away from the condo because of the $50 charge if you loose it. I would reccomend this as a great place to stay, it was close enough to Lahina to be convienient, but far enough away to avoid the congestion. Rent a car and use this as your home base. I read a negative review that said they don't provide coffee filters and other incidentals, well there is a store in close walking distance to get anything you need, and a coffee shop close by too. I never expect rental condos to include incidentals; maybe you would complain if the mustard went bad...Thanks for such a great place to stay. Better book soon, the calendar is filling up fast...others must agree with me!

Owner response:I am very grateful for this kind review and very pleased that these guests enjoyed my condominium so much. The real reason we ask guests to leave the key in the lockbox is so that they don't lock themselves out because it can take sometime to obtain help to re enter the condo. We are individual owners and so the office is not legally allowed to help if guests lock themselves out. We have this arrangement as a safeguard. I am glad this family enjoyed everything else and we certainly have a lot of happy guests. I am so glad they loved the view and the location and I hope that we will see them again whenever they can come to Maui. Thank you from Jennifer

We have to say we were disappointed in our stay here. Yes, the location was great, and the place is right on the beach, just as anyone would want. But the place needed updating, and was only minimally fitted out. While there was appropriate kitchen equipment, the little things were just not there. There was a coffee machine, but no coffee filters. There was a dish washer, but no dish washer detergent. Things like that, you know, the little things you never should have to shop for. I mean, a hundred coffee filters cost two bucks, and what good is a dishwasher without soap? Not to mention none for the sink. Packets of mustard and ketchup? No. Salt and pepper? No. A brillo pad? No, and someone had obviously had a problem with that, since one of the pots had burnt-on food which might have been able to have been cleaned by some prior person had there been these essentials. Also, there was no help about things in the area. What would it have taken for the owners to have set up a binder about what was nearby? Where were good places to eat, or to snorkel, or wander, or do this or that? The Aloha spirit was just not there. It would not have taken much more than better personal attention to have improved things significantly. Things like explicitly saying how to get into the apartment, rather than leaving things unsaid, and hoping that the vacationer would figure it out. It was very disappointing, and need not have been so.

Owner response:For future guests information, here is the list of amenities that are available when you first arrive. There is always dish detergent for the dishwasher and for hand dish washing. Also, every guest is sent a confirmation letter with details of the lock box code and an explanation of how to enter the condo. Another point, there are so many coffee filters in the kitchen cupboard that they will last for a couple of years. My husband and I are always available if there are any problems at all. The above guest was upset because I was unable to give him a late check out because I had new guests arriving that afternoon. I hope this clarifies things for anyone who is looking to rent my condominium here in Kaanapali. Maui Kai~ This unit is cozy and clean!

We had a wonderful 4 wk stay in this sweet little unit March 2011. A vacation of our life time. One we will never likely be able to experience again. (We stayed in this unit in 2009 for 2 weeks) Up went the feet and enjoyed those island breezes coming off of the ocean, and listen to the ocean waves day and night. We brought the paper with us that Charlie & Jennifer give you when you agree to lease the unit with directions. When we got to the unit door… we opened that door together~! An exciting return for us~ * A L O H A *! It’s in our mind and hearts to be happy and enjoy ourselves, and oh how we did! We make Maui Kai our home away from home! They have a grill area down at the cabana in the pool area. We met other couples and families. It was never over crowded when sharing the spacious grills with others. Inside the cabana is a small kitchen with more cooking utensils and dishes for your barbequing needs. It was like having a big cook out with friends or family. In the evenings tiki torches burn all around you. Questions while there… just ask the Maui Kai office personnel. They are great to help! And you’ll find there are certainly no shortages of activity pamphlets in the lobby! Very helpful! So much to do on Maui! Nice place to eat your meals? “DUKES” is a very short walk up the beach with that island feel. Fun place to go no matter what age. If you never turn on the TV or your pc… just watching out that wide wide window in this unit and looking at the ocean is entertainment. We seen the whales and spinner dolphins. A few mornings at day break we seen green sea turtles. We seen a few monk seals (rare) swimming along the shore line. The shore/beach is right at the door! Not one tree between you and the ocean!!! Snorkeling is just out that door if your interested! Just bring your gear. This Maui Kai unit has everything you’ll need! The new big king bed is so comfortable~ The unit has cable and FREE internet. We fixed 90% of our meals right there and ate out on the lanai. We found the unit clean and fully supplied with all the amenities that the site said they did. You won’t find chocolates on fluffed pillows each night. You take care of it until you leave. Plan on making a grocery list and going to the store for your extra needs when you get there. You make it home while there. It’s cozy and a fun place to stay. Your vacation is what you put into it~ and this unit added to our unforgettable memories once again! We take offense to the review the people wrote from NY who came the day after we left. We stayed from March 2nd until March 31st 2011. We don’t agree with your comments. Unless someone got into this unit between our exit and your arrival… which I doubt… We didn't leave any pan with burnt food on it. There wasn't a dirty dish or pan or any dirty utensils when we left. Everything was washed and all put away nice and neat. We do not drink coffee at all and there were coffee filters with the nice coffee machine. We bought a set of salt and pepper shakers and left them there. There was dish soap and dishwasher soap, scrubby and a brush for dishes, etc. We have stayed in this unit before and found all the needed items as we did this time. We found everything we needed in this kitchen. They have more then most. We never expect to find condiments such as mustard or ketchup. That is not an item to complain about. No binder of things to do? Right in the unit there was a load of different island magazines and pamphlets as you walked in on the right by the stereo. Channel 7 is the Visitor Channel. You can’t go anywhere that you don’t find pamphlets on things to see and do. Anyone who has been there knows that very well. When you leased the unit you didn't get a paper but everyone else did on how to get to the unit? Ok. Next… The people in the office of Maui Kai will help answer ANY questions on where to go. Most people make plans on this kind of vacation before arriving and can easily buy any excursion when there on the island. The unit had 2 snorkeling sets and all you have to do is look out off of the lanai on any given day and see people snorkeling right in front of you. I snorkel and I found my way to the ocean. We find your whole review disheartening and unbelievable being we were the occupants before you. We question your review and what you were trying to accomplish in writing it. If we leased a unit with the needed amenities missing we would have called the owners and not wait until after we left.

Our family of 4 stayed here in November and just loved it. The view is awesome and the unit had everything we needed. The beaches were great fun and just right out the front door. The unit is convieniently located right by a nice grocery store, snorkel rental, etc. The king bed is very comfortable. My children slept on one of the pull out beds and had no complaints. This is a fantastic place to stay.

I really enjoyed the stay. The accommodations were very good while we had excellent communications with Jennifer and Charlie throughout the planning process and a welcome call when we arrived. The Maui Kai is a small, intimate condo, unlike the mega-condos along the beach which is what was preferred. The sliding door was open every minute we were in the condo. I will miss the roar of the ocean hitting the beach and the priceless sunsets. Having a fully stocked kitchen was a plus - even plastic containers - which came in handy when we packed a lunch to Haleakala. I look forward to a return visit to Maui Kai #405 one day. Once you make a visit, you will feel the same way.

i'll let you in on a little secret. this particular condo is the best, most mind-blowing deal you will find on maui. trust me, i know because i searched for weeks! this place is perfect for a relaxing getaway. the location is north kaanapali, which takes you just far enough away from the constant tourist frenzy around black rock and actually leaves you with ample beach space to relax. while there, we even witnessed a small wedding ceremony on the beach right next to the maui kai. the snorkeling is great, with the reef being easy to reach and navigate. and since im not much of a going in the ocean sort of gal or can stay out in the direct sun too long due to irish skin, i was able to watch my man directly from the comfort of the condo's lanai in his snorkeling adventures (and see some fish too!). now, when they talk about this condo's proximity to the ocean, they are not joking. it is UNREAL! waking up every morning to this massive view makes you question as to if you really are awake because it is unbelievable. we would have a breakfast feast every morning on their wonderful dining room furniture on the spacious lanai and watch the ocean come alive. i think the only pitfall to staying in this condo is that YOU WILL NOT WANT TO LEAVE THE CONDO. the condo itself is perfect. it has a nice spacious feel, very clean, and feels like home. the tv is a modern flat screen with lots of channels, and has a dvd if you would like to rent some movies. we used the internet every day in the room since we had a laptop, but you could also use the computer in the rec room by the pool, which also had a printer. the bed felt fantastic and i slept like a rock. i wasnt sure what supplies would be there, but they had it all available in the condo -- fully stocked (think dishwashing soap, aluminum foil, paper towels, trash bags, etc). there are even beach umbrellas, a cooler, a boogie board, beach chairs, water shoes, ...everything. the owners were very friendly and accessible when we had a minor problem in locking up the key in the lockbox. charlie was there in a flash and was very accommodating and fixed our hiccup. as for price, i do not think this condo can be beat -- or even matched for that matter. they have the most screaming deals out of all the condos listed for west maui, and with maui kai, you wont be paying any hidden fees like parking or resort use. the condo is quiet and truly a spacious slice of paradise in paradise!

Marvelous Memories of the Maui Kai

We spent four nights at the Maui Kai and found it to be even better than it looked in the photos. It was very clean, spacious, and so filled with sunshine that we almost needed sunglasses indoors! The new bed was extremely comfortable, but my husband insisted on sleeping on the lanai one night to hear the waves better. All staff that we encountered were friendly & courteous & made us feel welcome. Parking was convenient & plentiful. We enjoyed the "right on the water" feel & the magnificent views. We like the Kaanapali area better than any other part of Maui, but we were still convenient to other areas. We ventured south to Lahaina several times & took the ferry to Molokai for the Ali'i Tour which was wonderfully rich in historical information & a good way to get a quick picture of a slower, simpler lifestyle. From our first inquiry communication was prompt & clear, and a follow up email after my husband forgot his sports coat was equally prompt & reassuring with a promise to mail the coat home for us. All in all we could not have had better accomodations or more pleasant, helpful owners. Thanks for making our visit so comfortable.

spent 11 nights in paradise in no small part to the accomodations at Maui Kai. Whale watching and the sunsets are spectacular. The condo exceeded our expectations. We stayed here at the Maui Kai this past winter and it was truly lovely. The location of this suite is steps from the water and the views of the islands of Lanai and Molokai from the balcony are amazing! We ate every meal outside. The suite was well-equipped and the bed was new and very comfortable. We kept the doors open and listened to the crashing waves. It was very relaxing. The pool area was also great for evenings once it was too dark for the beach and it was nice to have the bbqs available there too.

WOW!!! Great place to take the family. We took our two teenagers and had plenty of room for us in this condo. Kitchen was fully equipped with all the essentials. Lanai was the BEST with a pull-out sofa for the kids and a dining table to enjoy the beautiful views while eating breakfast,lunch and dinner. I would recommend this condo to everyone. We got back from Maui this morning. We had reserved this unit for 8 nights. We specifically asked the owners about the bed to make sure it was a king. They told us it was a California King, which is supposed to be bigger than a king. The bed was horrible. It was 2 child's twin beds put together with a foam mattress over it that hangs over one side. We were very disappointed. My husbands feet hung off the bed. We felt like it was a small step up from camping. We ended up moving to another condo at the Mahana next door. We were so relieved to have a comfortable bed we were willing to give up the view. We ended up negotiating with someone who rented a much more luxurious condo for a huge discounted rate. It had a panoramic view. We were grateful to move so we could have a rested vacation. The view is the only thing good about the condo and the price. The rest of the unit was very basic. The bathroom was stained. Some of the silverware was not clean either. We didn't expect anything luxurious since the price of the unit is on the lower side. We did expect a comfortable bed. We've slept in Motel 6 units that are 40 bucks a night and they manage to have ok beds. If you aren't too picky about your bed this might be an affordable condo for you. The owners were not honest about it though. When we called them to complain they acted like we were crazy. When we were in Maui, we saw someone advertising a used king bed for $70. I almost called the owners to let them know. We also went to a beach 2 days in the south part of the island. Next time we will be staying in that area. The beaches were much better and less rocky.

Owner response:SINCE THIS REVIEW WAS MADE THERE HAVE BEEN MANY IMPROVEMENTS, INCLUDING A NEW CAL KING BED.I would like to assure any future vacationers that in my opinion, and also many others, the above revue is not accurate. I have tried this bed and find it to be very comfortable. I have also had guests with chronic back problems, stay in my unit and they have told me how relieved they were that the bed was good. They have often had bad experiences in other resorts.. I know that the person who was unhappy was 6 feet 3 inches tall and so probably his feet did hang over . You can see from the other reviews that everyone else has been more than happy with the condo. The view from the unit is actually SPECTACULAR and I also have a guest book full of compliments. In addition the suite is very reasonably priced and so affordable for visitors on a budget. Before any new guests check into the unit, all of the dishes and silverware are washed thoroughly in a very efficient Kitchenaide dishwasher. I have had many positive comments made to me about the cleanliness of the whole unit. I also have several repeat guests,who tell me they won't stay anywhere else. How do you ever explain to anyone what a wonderful dream you had!?! You can't. All we can tell you is that this unit of Jennifer's & Charlie’s brought us something way beyond our expectations. We were there in February and we watched whales ALL DAY LONG. When you rent this unit… bring your camera if nothing else!!! Then come night we watched the stars and fell asleep with the sound and the feel of the cool ocean breezes. If you want to block out the sound of the ocean waves… you only have to slide the big glass doors closed. Stay home if you’re thinking of coming there with your work. This is the best unit to see the ocean and feel that island spirit. We have visited the islands many times and we do not want to lease any other unit on Maui after staying here. Because we did enjoy it so much… it was honestly sad when it came time to leave. We had the opportunity to have supper with the Hull’s. What a nice evening. These two are a warm and welcoming couple. We stayed TWO WEEKS so we know we were blessed to have come across this unit! THANK YOU JENNIFER & CHARLIE HULL~

Maui Kai is in a great location, just a few feet from the Pacific Ocean, and with the most spectular views. We were lucky enough to see whales on several evenings from the lanai, and loved the combination of the beach and refreshing sea swimming, and the private compound with heated pool, jacuzzi and well-equipped recreation area. This was pleasantly quiet, with never more than a dozen people using it. The apartment was really comfortable, clean and well equipped (certainly by British standards). It felt like home and our ten day stay was very happy. We ate in quite a few times and found everything we needed to prepare our meals. The teenagers enjoyed the sofa beds, and we found the bedroom soothing. We all slept well despite the 11 hour time difference. The owners couldn't have been more helpful, recommending good places to see, shop and eat. We hope to be back before too long!

We had an excellent time here at the Maui Kai! Not only was everything perfect in the unit, the view is second to none. We saw lots of hump back whales and the birds fed right out of our hands from the Lanai! Through circumstances we got to meet the owners of the unit and they went above and beyond our expectations to help us have a better holiday. They are very decent people who truly care about their guests comfort. If we go back to Maui we would not hesitate to rent from them again! We recently came back to stay at this property again and were very pleased to find that a number of updates have been done to the suite. We loved it when we originally stayed so it was a real bonus to find it even nicer than we remembered. We absolutely love this suite at the Maui Kai. The location and views are truly some of the most breathtaking we've ever seen! We will definitely return and would recommend this rental to friends and family.

We had a really great time here in Maui. It was beautiful and the condo was great!. The boogie boards were great.! Thank you for providing them for us to play with. We went snorkeling almost every day. Thank you for letting us rent your place.

This condo was amazing. From the first day we woke up at 4:30 in the morning to see the sun shine on the islands across the bay, to the whales we saw from the balcony every minute of the day. You are right there on the sand and the ocean. Sleep with the window wide open to listen to the ocean waves hit the beach. It was amazing to be right there on the sand. The sunsets were breath taking every night. The place was clean and organized. Laundry is just down the hall. Bring laundry soap from home. You will never need as much as you will have to buy for a week on the island. Everything in the kitchen is there that you would need to cook a wonderful meal and sit on the balcony to watch the sun set. I suggest bringing some zip lock bags from home if you decide to cook or take sandwiches to the beach or on a day trip thru the island. The BBQ/kitchen area by the pool was great to cook out. There is a FULL kitchen. Dish Wash, Frigate, sinks, and counters space for preparing a meal. The pool and play room added to the BBQ experience. We loved our stay here!. Great snorkelling at Black Rock. We even saw sea turtles.My boyfriend proposed to me on the beach in front of the Seahouse restaurant. Needless to say that was a highlight.! Thanks for making this beautiful place available.

We had a wonderful time here at Maui Kai!.This has now been our 3rd trip to Maui, and this has been our favorite lodging here. We enjoyed the big lanai, the big family room and the big ocean view. We loved hearing the sound of the ocean as we cooked breakfast. We were also very impressed with what we saw snorkeling in the ' backyard '.... schools of very big fish, colorful fish and a very big green turtle. Mahalo and Aloha

Great Location

We had a great time in Maui, the Island is wonderful. The condo was clean and tidy with all the amenities one could possibly want. The condo had a GREAT direct view of the ocean and the sound of the waves on the beach 20 feet from the balcony was incredible. Some kitchen upgrades needed, fridge icemaker didn't work, fridge hard to close, etc. King bed is NOT a king, but 2 twins shoved together with a lump in the middle to make them a "king" bed. WiFi is available only in the stairwell area of lobby, or by the pool, not in the Condo as advertised which accounts for the "average" rating. Great location, great condo...would recommend it to people not needing the internet on a regular basis.

Owner response:As the owner of this wonderful condo, I would like to respond to the above review. Until recently my husband and I lived in this condo for 16 years. It was difficult to move away because of the superb location right on the beach.I always enjoyed my long walks on the beach in the morning, which I used as my relaxation and my fitness program at the same time. We reluctantly moved as we needed more space. The fridge never had an ice maker and we do not advertise that it does.There are plenty of ice trays. Also I do not find any problem with the fridge door and nobody else has mentioned this.We always tell guests that the wireless is in the cabana, which is close by at the pool,easily accessible and very readily available as it is not heavily used. As for the bed, we now have a new bed and it is extremely comfortable.

The location of this unit can't be beat! It's so close to the water; you couldn't get a better view. Shopping and restaurants are very convenient too. Best of all, Kaanapali beach is at your doorstep. We walked along it every day. In our opinion it's the nicest beach on the island. Prices were affordable and bookings were made easily and in a friendly manner. We would definitely recommend this to others. We will be back!!

We have stayed in unit 405 several times and think it has a remarkable view of both garden and ocean sides of Maui. Its very upscale and elegant but the price is very reasonable; definately one of the best places on the island to book a stay, (it would even be better to own for all those with "The Dream!") It has a quiet, friendly atmosphere, and is located close to shopping, restaurants, and activies. This location affords the BEST beach walk on the island, there is never a crowd, and you can literally swim and snorkel a few feet right outside the door! Breakfast on the lanai in unit 405 started every day of our vacations off totally relaxed, because the view of the wide expanse of ocean and islands Lanai'i and Molokai is so close we felt we could touch them, along with the amazing views of multiple rainbows at times. Sunsets from unit 405 are even better! This is a great place to whale watch in the winter season or relax in the sun and surf in the summer time. This unit is a definately a dream location.
