Other popular places to go are: Lydgate Beach Park (10 minutes), Limahuli National Tropical Garden (55 minutes), Kilauea Lighthouse (20 minutes), `Anini Beach (25 minutes), Poipu Beach Park (40 minutes), Kukui Grove Mall (22 minutes), `Opaeka`a Falls (15 minutes), Wailua Falls (30 minutes), and the largest coffee plantation in the USA, Kauai Coffee (35 minutes).
Your hosts, Bob and Marianne, are long-time Kaua`i residents and are happy to answer questions and make recommendations related to your special needs and interests. So before you book a bed and breakfast, B&B, a discount hotel, or a condo, consider our cottage or our hale in Kapaa. We also have video's on you tube. Mahalo !
To reach `Ohi`a Kai from Lihue Airport, turn right at the traffic light as you’re leaving the airport. The road becomes Kuhio Highway at the next traffic light. Continue straight for about nine miles. Along the way you will cross the Wailua River, pass the Coconut Marketplace shopping and dining complex on your right, pass two adjacent shopping centers on your left, pass more restaurants on your left, and come to a traffic light in front of a small shopping complex with a Big Save grocery store, U.S. Post Office, and Shell gas station. A few blocks further and you will see a left-turn only lane in front of the Latter Day Saints Church. There is no traffic light here, but you will see the entrance to Pono Kai resort directly to your right and a sign welcoming you to downtown Kapa`a in the grassy area ahead. Turn left onto `Ohia Street. Note that this is a 90° turn. `Ohi`a Kai, clearly marked with green signs, is four houses down, at the end of this short street, just before the gate to a county property.
Park in front of the cottage or along the fence on the church side of ohia street. If we are not there when you arrive we will have a lock box on the front door. If you plan to arrive in the evening, contact us prior to your arrival so that we can give you the lock box combination.
Behind the cottage is a two story house we call the Hale; Hale means 'house' in Hawaiian. `Ohi`a Kai Hale refers to the upstairs vacation unit in the house. The Hale is also listed in vrbo, listing number 85235. The entire downstairs of the Hale is utilized by quiet, professional counseling offices. We are one block from Pono Kai, an oceanfront resort. Across the road from our property is the Church of Latter Day Saints.

This rental home made our time in Kauai relaxed. We had the nearby stores and restaurants within minutes away and the beaches were all so close that walking to them was like 3-5 minutes. The home itself had everything we could have asked for. Bikes, barbecue, dishes, towels and a home full of things for everyday use. Huge restroom with great shower. Ideally located for day trips as in any direction we were there in a hour. Overall we would recommend this home for use by anyone.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, sightseeing, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

This is a great little cottage that fits into a budget vacation. My wife and I spent 10 days there for our honeymoon, and were very satisfied. It's small, but not so small that two people would feel crowded. It's fully furnished, including a well outfitted kitchen, beach stuff, plenty of towels, and the usual hotel bathroom supplies. There are 3 AC units, which can get the place very cool combined with ceiling fans. Free laundry facilities are around the side of the adjacent building. The decor and dishes etc. are pretty eclectic, i.e. don't expect the predictable polish of a hotel room, which has it's charm. The whole place was quite clean, with plenty of signs of use as well. The owners left us flowers and fresh fruit, and came by to welcome us. We ran into Marianne once when it was raining and when she found out we didn't bring an umbrella she just gave us hers, so kind. There was a schedule for the local farmer's market on the fridge, and a trail guide book for the island, and lots of other nice touches like that. They really care about making your stay nice. The kitchen: The kitchen is spread out (for zoning reasons), but functional. The fridge is in the next room, and the sink is in the bedroom. It has all the appliances and utensils/dishes/silverware you'll need. Pitcher with filter in the fridge. Washing the dishes in the small sink is a little tricky, but there's a big proper sink outside if you care to carry dishes out there. We only ate out 3 times in our 10 days there, and we didn't really miss anything, except maybe an oven for baking. We did eventually run into some stray ants, but that's the nature of living on the ground floor in a tropical region. I wouldn't recommend leaving food out all night. The bedrooms: The main bedroom has a very comfortable queen size bed and a dresser. The other bedroom/living room has more of a futon mattress, so more dense. Both are accessible by two doorways that have recessed sliding doors, so you can change the configuration as needed. The bathroom: Again, very clean with some signs of use. The towels were folded in a fancy manner, nice touch. The shower stall is just big enough for one person, although the bathroom itself is big. It's one of the only non-condo places we considered with an internal bathroom (we think the external bathroom stall thing is weird). Overall we were super happy with this place, and would definitely stay here again, thanks!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Mahalo and we look forward to seeing you again on Kauai. aloha bob and marianne

We truly enjoyed our stay! It was the perfect size for two (although could accomodate up to 4 comfortable). 2 bdrs, a kitchenette, washroom, and living room were perfect. We made good use of the barbecue and bicycles too. Great location too. Steps away from the beach, Kapaa town and the supermarket. Hosts/owners, Bob and Marianne were incredibly accomodating and even showed up with fresh grapefruit and starfruit that they had picked that day. Perfect getaway for couples on a budget and for those not looking to get sucked into resort life.:)Recommended for: Families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, tourists without a car, adventure seekers.

Super comfortable, cute and clean. Very accommodating and welcoming- we arrived a bit early with our two young children and they let us unload and settle even though they were still cleaning. We appreciated their flexibility. The location was just fine- a short walk to cute downtown historic Kapaa as well as several beaches. Also appreciated was the more general location on the island- we were within comfortable driving distance from everything. Overall, we would stay here again!Recommended for: Families with young children, romantic getaway, tourists without a car.
Owner response: We love having wonderful guests like you! Thank you for taking the time to sen in a review, and we hope to see you again in the future!

Originally it was only going to be myself visiting, however there ended up being 4 of us at the cottage. The queen bed/bedroom was assigned to my brother. I slept on the futon and the owners so kindly supplied a brand new Aero bed for my two sisters. We were so comfortable in the cottage. The property, altho compact was perfect for the 4 of us and budget wise, you couldn't ask for a better deal. Cleanliness of the cottage was not 100% but it wasn't anything that I could really complain about. The fans in all the rooms needed dusting. The table where the microwave sat was in need of a good scrubbing. The fridge needed a wipe out. The bathroom WAS clean. The listing and photos accurately described the property/location, etc. The owner, Bob, was terrific, unfortunately I did not get to meet Marianne. I would definitely stay again and would recommend it to others.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you for taking the time to send in a review! We don't always get a chance to double-check on the interior after the cleaning crew has finished, so we appreciate being alerted to anything that needs attention. We strive to ensure that our guests are comfortable and enjoy their experience with us. We hope to see you again in the future! Aloha!

Enjoyable setting, greats owners, clean and well maintained. No ants or roaches, despite a previous review. A few geckos, but they're great. Several chickens, also great. Location description accurate--very convenient. Short walk to a beautiful beach trail that goes for miles.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, people with disabilities, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

My family of four spent two nights at the cottage in October, 2012. Sleeping accommodations were comfy and we had enough room to stretch out and have a bit of privacy. There was an issue with the hot water heater and the owner quickly brought in a service technician to work on it. The owner's wife even brought over some fresh fruit, which was a nice personal touch. The kitchenette is best suited to breakfast cereals, sandwiches, and other cold food items and the fridge allows you to stock up on those items if you're staying for any length of time. Bottom line: nice setting, good value, convenient location, accessible/helpful owners.Recommended for: Families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers.

This place is hands-down the best place to stay for travelers like me on a budget. I didn't even need a car, since beach, town, post office, farmers market, etc. are within walking distance. Owners also provide free use of bicycles and laundry facilities. They were also very helpful about telling me about island events and great hiking trails. We even went on a hike together. Brand new bed, quiet location, clean and cool. The back door is a little rusty, but that didn't affect security or privacy. I would totally recommend this to my friends. I'll,definitely stay there again.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, people with disabilities, adventure seekers, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us! We have made major upgrades to the cottage and the Ohia Kai property this past year and appreciate when our guests let us know they are glad they chose us as thier home in paradise! We look forward to your return next year!

Message body The pictures are not correct, the sun room is not useable for internet as it is cluttered, the bedroom is now the kitchen. The sofa in living room is a disaster, it is ripped and covered with a sheet which makes it very annoying to have to fix after you sit down. Some of the linen for the bed was dirty, had to wash before using The cottage was not clean when we got here, had to wash food off walls and clean shelving in dishes cupboard. The back door curtain was ripped and I had to stitch it together, bathroom mats were dirty, floors have not had a proper wash in a long time, swiffers do not work. Had to buy wine glasses and a vegetable peeler, good thing I brought some of my own knives for cooking as the ones here are very dull. The one cup measuring cup had a huge hole in it, all kitchen items are cast offs. The owners did replace the hot plate for us as the one in here was not rated to even boil!!!!!! let alone fry. Be prepared to wake up prior to 6am with the backup alarms on the work trucks next door. The gardens infront of the cottage have been left unattended for sometime, overgrown and unattractive. The walk way to the laundry is dangerous, be careful at night, it is half a walk with clutter all along the wall of the building. The laundry room is dirty, but free laundry. The entire cottage needs a make over and cleaning, it is very cluttered. The cockroach and ant problem need to be attended to as well, we managed to get the ants under control, but it does not take much to put some boric acid about for the cockroaches and they would be gone. Nothing worse than having a roach crawl over you in bed. Bob and Marianne were very nice, did get us a new hotplate, and bring us flowers and and fruit at Christmas, but it is time to attend to the inside of the cottage and the yard. It is in a good location, walk to town and short drive to beach. For the less money we found a beach view condo that was very nice, but alas too late. We were here for 50 days.Owner response: Guest satisfaction is a very high priority for us, so we are truly sorry for any discomfort experienced by these guests. The cottage is thoroughly cleaned after each guest leaves and if the cleanliness does not meet arriving guests' standards, we would remedy any problems immediately. We also value guests' privacy, so if a complaint is not shared with us, we are unlikely to know there is a potential problem. Bob's office is a few meters away from the cottage, and he and his staff are readily available to help. We upgrade the furnishings, linens, landscaping, and other amenities on an ongoing basis as our budget permits, and in 2011 most of the efforts were focused on our three other rentals. In response to this review we have been attending to the cottage thoroughly to ensure future guests' comfort and satisfaction. We continue to offer our guests a convenient, affordable and private accommodation option with extra aloha touches such as fresh flowers, fruit, use of bicycles, and other attractive amenities.

We stayed here for the month of September. It is central to everything on the island and walking distance to restaurants, grocery stores and the beach. Bob and Marianne are very friendly, helpful and responsive, but not at all intrusive. The accommodations are pleasant and the bed is comfortable (even with my bad back!). The mini-kitchen is adequate and capable of turning out gourmet meals with a little creativity! And kind, often anonymous, neighbors left avocados and other island treats on our porch. We enjoyed staying here and will recommend it to our friends and families when they come to the island. There is plenty of aloha here!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: Bob and Mariane have lived on Kauai since 1997. Bob is a licensed clinical psychologist and his offices, Pacific Clinic, are on the first level of Ohia Kai Hale. Marianne teaches at Hawaii Pacific University on Oahu.
Why the Owner Chose Kapaa:
The location of `Ohi`a Kai Cottage and Hale is ideal for vacationers, business visitors, and residents seeking short-term housing. Managed and operated by owners Bob and Marianne, it is on a quiet lot one very short block, mountain side, of Kuhio Highway, within convenient walking distance of the ocean, several churches, and the shopping and dining pleasures of downtown Kapa`a. To reach the ocean, simply cross Kuhio Highway and walk through Pono Kai Resort. By walking one block north on Kuhio Highway, one is in the center of quaint Kapa’a town, with restaurants, shops, banks and a handful of other local businesses. If you are not familiar with Kuhio Highway, it is helpful to know that it is not a busy thoroughfare, but a two-lane road with a 25 mph speed limit with lots of crosswalks where it passes through Kapa`a.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
One block from ocean and ''downtown' Kapa`a, a great location for travel to all parts of the island. walking distance to shops and places to eat. Dog-friendly, private, affordable, comfortable. We have posted virtual tours on youtube for all of our vacation rentals. Search for Ohia Kai Cottage 2012 for the most recent views of the cottage, inside and out. Last but not least, Marianne and Bob are really nice folks who won't hesitate to 'talk story' about things to do on the island. Marianne lived in Germany for many years and spricht gern deutsch! we have Turbo internet (up to 20/2Mbps) with our WiFi.
