We welcome you to a craftsman’s style cottage, nestled amongst the trees, in a quiet cove on Smith Lake. Enjoy a quiet evening sitting outdoors on one of the multiple decks overlooking the lake. Warm yourself from the evening chill wrapped in a blanket, comforted by the flickering light from the outdoor fire pit. The sounds of the woodlands at twilight are enhanced by the view of the moon glistening on the water. So very peaceful!
Awake in the morning, alive and refreshed. Serve yourself a steaming hot cup of coffee in a beautiful, well-stocked kitchen. Casually walk outside to the screen porch and settle in the quaint outdoor seating area. Here you smile and breathe in the fresh air as you listen to the sounds of the wildlife on the lake. You’ll find an unusual sense of energy in this 3000 sq ft, two story home, snuggled in, just a few steps from the lake.
Equal distance from both Birmingham and Huntsville, just 6 miles from Hwy 65 (Exit 304), this lake house cottage could be your getaway from it all.
'On A Whim' has an inviting covered front porch and plenty of parking for your family and friends. As you enter the front door, you are welcomed by the main living area, decorated in a rustic, but luxurious style with a gorgeous planked vaulted ceiling and large windows looking out over the lake.
The main level features a large Master with it’s own set of french doors leading out to the main deck. The ensuite bath features a Jacuzzi tub, large counter space and an over sized shower with a refreshing rain head. The Patriot bedroom is just down the hall from the Master, which offers two twin beds and is next to the main floor full bath.
The beautifully crafted kitchen is well stocked and features all stainless appliances. The island in the kitchen faces the open floor plan of the main living area and dinning room, allowing you to always be a part of the action.
The dining area has a custom table that seats 9 with an additional 3 seats at the island. Additional folding tables and chairs are provided. The home has a laundry area equipped with a full size washer and dryer, iron and ironing board and even a few laundry baskets.
The Angel's Perch loft area is decorated in a sweet southern style with a daybed and pop-up trundle, the perfect little girls hang out, including a trunk of dolls to play with.
As nice as the upper levels are, the lower level is where all the fun is. Challenge your friends to a game of pool or air hockey. Then, settle into the leather sofas and watch the big game on the 51' Plasma HDTV, or just hang out on the lower patio and stare at the lake. In addition to the rec areas, the lower level also offers a third bedroom with a queen bed, decorated in a nautical theme and a fourth bedroom with two sets of bunk beds, decorated in a camping theme with a dedicated 36' video gaming tv. A full bath will make sure you're not running up and down stairs all day.
'On A Whim' gets good AT&T and Verizon 3G coverage, and has broadband WIFI Internet and DirecTV. Everything you need to ensure you can stay in contact with all your friends that are working while you chill out at the lake.

I wish I could give a 5 star review - because we loved the place - but because it was not as clean as it should have been, I’m giving it 4 stars. I emailed to owners directly with our concerns and I don’t think it will be an issue in the future. I rely on reviews when I’m looking for a place to rent so I want to give an honest review in order to help others. Pros: We appreciated the clean bedding and towels. Great sleeping spaces. Great parking area. Loved the decks, screened porch and dock. The extra ice maker in the basement was very useful. The house is decorated well with comfortable furniture. The house, decks and docks are exactly as pictured on the website. The ‘Arrival Letter’ included everything we needed to know. Very well written. Ideal location - close to shopping (WalMart) to pick up anything you need. Cons: We had issues with cleanliness but as I said, I think that will be taken care of. There wasn't enough hand soap, dish soap or dishwasher soap for the length of our stay. We had to purchase those items. There are curtains on the bedroom windows but not anywhere else in the house which was a little uncomfortable after dark. We had 6 women staying in the house. On A Whim was ideal for us. I recommend it for any kind of get away.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We take pride in the cleanliness of our lakehouse, and we've taken steps to ensure this won't happen again. For clarification on consumables, we do supply some of those things, but it's not an infinite supply. Since On A Whim does not offer daily cleaning and restocking service like a hotel, you might expect to have to refurnish some of those items during your stay. On A Whim is in a fairly private location. All of the bedrooms have curtains, and we've chosen not to cover any of the other windows so that we can enjoy the beautiful scenery. To start with, even though the pictures listed are fantastic, you will find this house to be far better than you imagined!! It is super amazing!!! It is so very well taken care of, exceptionally clean, and the owners are quick to respond to any questions you may have about the home, the area of Cullman, etc. Cullman is a very nice town to visit, which is close by for any need you may have. But I promise, you will not want to leave the house!! We especially loved watching the sunset on the spacious deck and talking for hours on the screened-in porch. If you bring your boat, the boat ramp is very close, which is truly an added bonus! Mark, we will be back!!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

On a Whim served as a great home base for the 12-man golf trip that I recently organized. Everyone was thoroughly impressed with the space and enjoyed cooking dinner/hanging out after a long day on the links. The house is maintained exceptionally and really felt like a resort-caliber experience. On a Whim is a great house for getting all the kids together. The large basement entertainment area with the bunk beds was perfect for letting the little ones have their own space (so the adults could have theirs as well - upstairs).Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children.

On a Whim is a beautiful home on beautiful Smith Lake. I knew that the pictures of the place were very nice but when I walked in the door, I was amazed at how beautiful and well kept the entire home was. For our group of 12, it was a perfect place.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.

Our family, which consists of 3 married children in their twenties, one grandchild age 16 months, my mother-in-law, my husband, and me all met for a long weekend at "On a Whim" in late July 2012. We had a wonderful time visiting, boating, playing games, and having meals together as we looked out at the lake. The house is very comfortable, nicely furnished, and has gorgeous views. It was quiet and peaceful. The decks and screened in porch allowed everyone their own private quiet space as desired. We also had a pool tournament and went to Cullman for a tennis competition on their public courts, which were in excellent condition. All in all it was a great time spent with family and I highly recommend "On a Whim". The owners were helpful and the property was clean. The stairs down to the lake were fine for most but would be difficult for the elderly and disabled.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Perfect location to house wedding party and out of town guests. The kitchen bar was ideal to serve the bridesmaid luncheon from. All the girls slept in the bunk beds and enjoyed the last single night together. Decks and porch very enjoyableRecommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Our family had a wonderful time at "On a Whim". It is truly a beautful home on a perfect lake. There was so much room and we loved the various locations to relax and visit. The screened in porch is perfect for the evenings, while the deck system going down to the lake offered a daytime lounging area. We loved the floating deck at the base, which was perfect for jumping right in the water. Very tastefully decorated; you will not regret renting this location!Did you find this review helpful? Great place for relaxing,reading,fishing,sunsets,family togetherness.House very clean and well stocked kitchen.The island was very useful for large meals being served.The pool table was a hit with both children and adults.The house is large enough to not get into each others way.To be able to do your own thing so to speak.I hope we can come back some day.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.
