Plum Island, Massachusetts is a barrier island off the coast of historic (pop.18k) Newburyport. This eight mile and approx. 1/4 mile wide island has some of the finest beaches in the Northeast. The island is home to the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge which encompasses six miles of the island and 4600 acres of natural beaches, salt marshes and meadows. 350 species of birds are normally sighted and the refuge is home to a herd of deer, fox beaver and other wildlife. The island is accessed via a causeway drawbridge. Plum Island has been cited by Forbes and Money magazines as one of the last few affordable beaches left in the US. National Geographic has rated Plum Island as one of the top ten beaches in America.
