Location: Lancaster, Dutch Country, Pennsylvania, USA (131 Upper Valley Rd. Atglen, PA, 19310)

Accommodations:  Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath (Sleeps 2)

This cottage is a recently restored small, stone house built in the early 1700's. It is located on the residence of Reuben and Frieda Graber. It sits in a secluded spot beside a beautiful creek, at the edge of a large wooded area. A rear, shaded, stone patio with comfortable lounge chairs overlooks the creek. An additional patio contains an outdoor dining set and outdoor fireplace/grill. Landscaped flower gardens surround the house. Hiking trails border the property.

On the first floor is an open beamed living room with a non-working fireplace, and an adjoining fully equipped kitchen. On the second story is a bathroom with shower, and bedroom equipped with a queen-sized bed. A locally handmade quilt decorates the bed.

The words of one of our guests states, "This is not for someone looking for the ultra modern hotel with non-stop spa treatments and the latest in technology. This is the place for someone looking for absolute quiet and relaxation." The first class restoration, country charm, the location beside the creek, and the scenery make it the perfect place to get away from your fast-paced world and find the things that matter most.

It is also a romantic spot to celebrate honeymoons and anniversaries. It is the perfect "home away from home" and is an easy drive to all the local tourist sites and wonderful shopping of Lancaster and Chester County. For a longer stay, it is a drivable distance for day trips to Gettysburg, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Wahington D.C. and New York City.

    • This cottage is the perfect place to go if you are looking for a peaceful retreat - away from everyday life, sights, and sounds. I did a lot of looking for just the right place to go for a few days as a personal retreat. I knew when I saw the listing this was it but until I got here, I had no idea just how perfect it would be! Every detail, from the beautiful grounds/stream, to the cottage's decorations, even the name gave me such a sense of peace and belonging. I highly recommend this, especially if you are looking for a place filled with love and peace to escape to for a while. You will not be disappointed! Thank you again Frieda for the wonderful blessing you offer to your guests with this cottage.

    • The Cottage far exceeded my expectations. After months of research, with dozens of local possibilities, I am still not disappointed that I picked this place for my honeymoon suite - even now that our time there has passed. My bride and I had a lovely time relaxing on the patio and back yard. Everything was lovely, quaint, and charming. The owner certainly gave services far beyond what we paid for. The pricing is below what she could charge - and everyone who has ever stayed there knows it. For a relaxing, charming retreat, pick this Cottage. You will certainly want to visit again - I'm already thinking about my next visit.

    • Just left the cottage this morning. Wonderful place. I kept thinking of the picture on their site "cottage, tucked between creek and hill" and expected the house to be in the back yard of Frieda's big home. Not so. This cottage has it's own private country lane and setting. We could imagine the life of an early 1700 French settler, (minus the electricity, well manicured lawn, running water and gardens). Thanks to the family for sharing. . .

    • Our weekend at the stone cottage was was absolutely fantastic. The serenity of the home, the grounds and the area were rejuvenating to the mind, body and spirit. Early spring and the trees and flowers are in fragrant bloom; the stream is full and the peaceful sound of moving water can lull you to sleep, if you are so inclined to nap on the patio. If you want a restful, very romantic getaway then the stone cottage is where you want to be.

    • This was by far my favorite place I have ever stayed. I wish that I never had to leave. I would even say that it was better than my honeymoon. :) My husband and I have 3 little girls, the oldest just turned 3. We love our girls dearly, but this was our first break from the kids since the oldest was born. Needless to say, we needed a break to sleep, relax, have time to be a couple again instead of just being parents, and get some more sleep. The scenery was amazing and the landscaping was just perfect. We didn't have our phones, computers, or a TV which made it go from an amazing place to as close to perfect as I could imagine. This isn't the place for a high adventure trip or for someone looking for the ultra modern hotel with non stop spa treatments. This is the place for someone looking for absolute quiet and relaxation. The country charm, the location, and the scenery couldn't be better. We're already trying to find relatives that can watch our kids so we can come back. Also, for those who appreciate restorations, this restoration is well done and deserves admiration of the detailed craftsmanship that went into modernizing the cabin while maintaining the historic charm.

    • If you are searching for peace and quiet you have found it. It is 20 minutes from Lancaster, Closer to Bird in Hand, recommended for Lunch. Surrounded by corn ready for harvest this Oct. when we were there. We watched as Amish and Mennonite used their horses in working the fields. We visited Sight & Sound which surpassed our expectations, drove in to West Chester to tour QVC, drove up to Muncy to see the "Grisley" store (woodworking machinery)and also visited the replica of the "Wilderness Tabernacle." Each evening we came "home" to a warm, quiet, just right cottage set in the back of a field. Excellent landscaping with a multitude of blooming flowers of various shades, a Photographers delight. The rain on the cedar shakes sounded so great to lull you back to sleep (1 night). The brook (est 12 foot across) rushed and ebbed over stones for a great sound effect. Everything in the refrigerator to get us started, bottled water, condiments, coffee etc. We had the couch and the recliner in full use in the evenings, catching up on the mound of reading we were behind on. This is a great place. Frieda is an excellent hostess and very helpful. We hated to leave.

    • You might think that the treeless winter landscape of Pennsylvania could not compete with the snow-capped mountains of Colorado ... NOT true. The cottage and it's surroundings are completely charming. I especially enjoyed the outdoor fireplace right next to the babbling stream. We enjoyed some wonderful meals there in the chilly evenings. The cottage itself is appointed with everything one could need for a cozy and quiet respite from the world. I recommend this idyllic retreat to and have already booked my next visit!

    • My wife and I vacationed in the Lancaster area in early October and stayed an entire week at the Graber's Agape House, the perfect location for us. During our week-long visit we journeyed by train for a day in Philadelphia, drove east to Valley Forge, west to Gettysburg, and traversed most of Lancaster County's towns, villages, and farmland. We took in as much as we could including wonderful Amish cooking, covered bridges, beautiful farms, homemade root beer, national historic sites, and whoopie pies. The Grabers have put much love into restoring and decorating this 18th century dwelling and those who stay here will appreciate their efforts. This charming little cottage is historic, peaceful, and cozy, and offers everything you'll need to feel like you belong here. It's secluded but not far from the highway, out of the heavily congested areas but close enough to everything, and just the right size to be comfortable no matter how much time is spent "at home". All in all, a wonderful vacation made even nicer by the owners' hospitality.
