Location: Ilhabela, Brazil, South America (located two hours from Sao Paulo International Airport)
Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms + Den, 4 Baths (Sleeps 6-8)
Our house is situated on the island of Ilhabela ("Beautiful Island"). Ilhabela is a fairly large island, located off the coast of the state of Sao Paulo. It is known as "The Sailing Capital of Brazil" due to the strong winds coming into the Sao Sebastiao Canal from the Atlantic Ocean. Our house is built on a steep coastal area overlooking the meeting of the Canal and the Atlantic. Getting to Ilhabela requires a 20-minute ferry boat ride from Sao Sebastiao (with or without car), once you are on the island, looking back in the direction of the continent, you are looking west. The sun sets into the water every evening directly in front of our house.
We spend most of the year in Brazil and Ilhabela, but make our home available for short-term rentals and special occasions. The house has been used a number of times for commercial photo shoots. The weather in Ilhabela is spring- and summer-like most of the year. The weather is always interesting and beautiful whether it is shining, raining, windy, or quiet. Christmas, New Year's, Carnival and Sailing Week are special times of the year here.
Ilhabela is a favorite weekend retreat from cosmopolitan Sao Paulo. "Paulistanos" come here to enjoy the many outdoor activities and fine restaurants Ilhabela has to offer. You can fill your time with day trips, beaches, water sports, hiking, etc., or spend your day home reading in a hammock or in front of the pool. The water of the "infinity" pool in front of the house disappears almost seamlessly where it meets the water of the Atlantic.
We designed the house with a simple, somewhat rustic interior and exterior, but the inner spaces have a generous, loft-like openness. The living room ceiling is over six-metres tall. There is a "master bedroom" suite on the second floor and two "guest room" bedroom suites on the first floor. Every room has a spectacular view of the water. The kitchen opens onto the living/dining room. An opening glass door wall opens from the living/dining room directly to a wide deck overlooking the sea. This deck leads in one direction to the pool, and in the other to a very large outdoor dining table.
There are stairs built into the hillside, and several decks along the way toward the ocean. The path is thick with vegetation, and once you arrive at the bottom, there is another large deck sitting about two metres above the ocean.
The house sits on the edge of a small bay, facing its own unique island. This clear water bay creates a perfect place for peaceful snorkeling or scuba diving. At the water's edge, the Atlantic gently crashes against the rocks in front of the house. You can easliy swim in front of the house, but if you prefer a beach, Ilhabela has over 20 fantastic sand beaches.. the nearest ones to the house are just 200 metres up or down the coastline.
Google "ilhabela" for more information about this beautiful island.
The house also has a very large artist's studio on the lower level. This is not available as part of a normal rental. Special arrangements may be considered for studio use.
Although we love kids, generally this house isn't perfectly safe for infants because of the many decks and balconies built on this fairly steep hillside. The house is perfectly safe for kids old enough to take care not to wander off a deck.
