The Mas de Roche is a classic, 200-year-old Provençal stone farmhouse. The mas has been completely renovated, with modern amenities including wifi internet access. It sits on a little over 1 hectare, approximately 2 acres, alongside a vineyard overlooking the medieval village of La Bastide d'Engras, approximately 15 kilometers, north of Uzès.

On the ground floor, there is a fully equipped modern kitchen including a dishwasher, with an adjoining dining area with a fireplace, that opens onto both courtyards. Al fresco dining is delightful. Also on the ground floor are a large two-story living room and a smaller winter salon and study, both with fireplaces. There are three bedrooms on the upper floor. One of the bedrooms has a large, queen-size bed and a private bathroom with spacious shower of native stone. The other two bedrooms, both with two twin beds, share a large bathroom that has a bath.

There is a separate utility room with washer and dryer. The mas is heated by radiant electric heaters when necessary. Telephone, satellite television, DVD player, portable CD/cassette player, outdoor grille, and picnic table and chairs are included.

La Bastide d'Engras is a quiet hillside farming village along a valley of vineyards, fruit and olive orchards, and lavender fields. The village, which is dominated by it's chateau, has a post office and a mairie, but no commerce, except the local wine cooperative, which sells it's award-winning merlot. There is a small weekly market in the village square on Tuesday's. Itinerant merchants, including a baker, also stop regularly in the village.

Nearby villages includes 2 kilometers to the west is St. Laurent la Vernède, which has a bakery and pastry shop and a small general store. There are other small villages along the valley, most with a chateau or fortress, some have a bakery or small store, an inn, or a small café or restaurant. Between La Bastide d'Engras and Uzès is St. Quentin la Poterie, a village known internationally for it's pottery studios and pottery museum. Located only about 8 km south of La Bastide d'Engras, St. Quentin la Poterie has a small supermarket and a number of bakeries and restaurants.

Uzès is a lively medieval town, distinguished as the first Duché of France. With it's fine chateau and various towers and fortress buildings dating from the 12th century, it has been a national protected site since the 1950s. There is a huge market every Saturday in the central Place aux Herbes and throughout the town, as well as a smaller, local market on Wednesdays. The town is full of shops and restaurants; there are a number of banks, a bus station, and a cinema. Uzès is also the home to two summer festivals, one celebrating ancient music and the other modern dance.

Uzès is surrounded by picturesque towns and villages, each with it's own character. While making the tour of the surrounding villages, one can stop at antique shops, wineries, and colorful markets.

La Bastide d'Engras is within easy driving distance of many of the most interesting and exciting attractions in the south of France. Within half an hour one can reach the Ardèche or the Pont du Gard. The cities of Avignon, Orange, and Nimes are all within 45 minutes drive. Arles, the Camargue, the beaches of Montpellier, the Luberon, and the Cevennes are an hour or so away.

There is wonderful bathing in the Cèze or in the Gardon at the Pont du Gard. Kayaks and canoes are available at the nearby towns on the Cèze and Gardon rivers; longer rafting trips take place on the Ardèche. The country roads are perfect for bicycling. There are also small country lanes and paths for walking.

    • What a great house and what an incredible job the owners did with it! Our group of five people ranged in age from 9 to 79. This house worked perfectly for our group. We had plenty of room in our bedrooms and lots of great space to be together as a group. The kitchen was excellent. The grounds were beautiful. The caretaker was very professional but a delight to work with. We had a wonderful time and highly recommend it.

    • We had a most wonderful stay in the Mas de Roche. We visited in October, so instead of taking advantage of the swimming pool and meals outdoors, we took walks past vineyards changing colors and drives to must-see villages like Rousillon and St.Remy. The farmhouse is well-located for visits to Uzes, Pont de Gard, Orange and Nimes, all unforgettable. The house itself had everything we needed for comfort and beauty.

    • This a beautiful and large place to stay. The mas has been beautifully decorated and it really feels like a home from home as it is exceptionally well appointed. The pool is great and we spent a lot of time in it. The website photos do not do any justice to the quality of this place it far exceeded our expectations. Very quiet and relaxing place to be for all our family.

    • Flanked by vineyards and edged by fragrant clusters of lavender and rosemary, this beautifully restored mas is a genuine treat. Discretely tucked away in the vicinity of Uzes, Mas de Roche is also convenient to virtually all the region's major attractions, including Avignon, Nimes and the Chateauneuf-du-Pape wine country. Whether spending a lazy day by the pool or setting out to do the area's many historical sights, this property is more than a resource, it's a real find.

    • We have stayed at the house three times and wish we could spend all our vacations there. The house is lovely. There is such care to detail -- it does not feel like a rental. Although we are content just to hang out at the house and by the pool, it is also in a great location. The town is charming --a little bit off the beaten path and totally unspoiled. Yet it is close to Uzes (a fun market town with restaurants and shops). There are also wonderful nearby spots for outdoor activities -- kayaking, hiking, and swimming. All in all, you can't beat this. (Also, the caretaker is very responsive and the owners are the nicest people.)

    • Comment Text: We have stayed in this mas 2 times and each time have loved it. It is the quintessential mas, very comfortable and easy to be in. It has a huge living room with a grand fire place and a kitchen that is equally lovely (with fIreplace, as well). The bathrooms are elegant and the grounds are superb. It is secluded and very private. A real gem.

    • We have stayed at this lovely Mas twice now (both times in April. The house is lovely, very private, and easy to live in. The owner is easy to reach and very gracious. Our tip: Make sure you have at least one meal at Mas d'Aros in Vallerargues!
