In May we went north to explore the Kohala coast. A mile off the main road there is a sunny, breezy spot with a gorgeous little cabin, very private, where you can wash the dishes or lie in bed and watch the whales cross while doing so. (The whales cross in the springtime) The bed is very comfortable, the decor charming, and the bathroom alone is worth the scenic drive north. Although the cabin is adjacent to the main house, it has complete privacy. To do: Snorkeling and Scuba diving at Mahukona Park. It's in a leeward cove. There's a ladder leading into the water for easy access, much easier than the entrance at other, more crowded, spots along the Kona coast. Many more fish, too! Lots of Yellow Tang. Just 20 minutes from the cabin to the east is a pretty hike to the valley but be prepared for lots of people.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway.

This is our second year at" A Whale Crossing", First was at the 2 BR House and this year was at the Cottage. Clean,Quite, Birds in the morning, the breeze, sun by 10 am in the yard, very private, Owners are what Sterling Hayden called Voyagers, If you want solitude, privacy, safety, to read, relax, lie in the sun, then this is quite nice. It's not the Hilton with cocktail bars and swimming pools and materialistic tourist. Great snorkeling 3 miles away, at a old abandon sugar foundation, nice beach 5 miles away, little town with stores and supplies again 3 miles away, !/2 mile down the road is a rock beach with whales off shore, audible at night in your bed room. Owners are very good peopleRecommended for: Romantic getaway.

What a wonderful place to stay and experience Hawaii for the first time. Awakening every morning to the birds singing and looking out through a tropical garden to an amazing view of the ocean while still laying in bed. We felt very welcomed by Marty and Linda who take lovely care of this beautiful place. We loved being surrounded by people who had been living here for so long and could show us how the locals live in Hawi. They were both wonderful hosts, sharing with us the spots 'not to miss' and even guided us on where to stop during our drive to the other side of the island. Hawi is an amazing spot on the borderline between wet and dry, and everyone should spend some time here with Marty and Linda. Thanks you two!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

I believe my wife and I returned from this place a month ago, yet part of us is still there. After 4 previous trips to the Islands, we finally got it right with this place. Marty and Linda proved to be the most gracious hosts by taking us into their private oasis and showing us the "True Hawaii" that is so easily lost in the resort scene. Awakening to the cacophany of birdsong and a nice cup of java on the deck ... watching the humpbacks playing in the sea and hearing their cries of joy. There is so much to see on the Big Island yet it was so hard to go any where else while sitting comfortably looking out to sea. One can just walk out their gate and down the road for a day of adventure.... Yet we did finally get out and what an experience it was to see how the people in this area are so attuned with where they live. Definitely not for the "resort" crowd but at the top of anyones' list who wants to experience how things are done here. Marty was very engaging in his knowledge of the area and Linda was just so sweet... We stayed at the small cottage they built and it was more than adequate to suit our needs. Nice comfty bed, well equiped kitchen and an awesome outdoor shower to refresh you each morning. Next time, we will bring more of the family and take the house ... as well as the cottage... Good job you two! Mahalo... William & Linda SullivanRecommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

I've been coming to this island for the last 25 years and I've never stayed in a more wonderful place. My husband and I loved staying in our own little private world with amazing views of the ocean. The owner Linda was a lovely host. This place was just magical.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

If you can deal with being an hour or so from town, this place is great for you. The owners are incredibly nice, and your privacy is never compromised. The place is just as you'd expect, and the outside shower is AWESOME. The property is very clean and well-maintained, and I would definitely stay there again. If you've never been to Hawaii and choose to stay here, make sure to talk to Linda and Marty about places to go and to avoid BEFORE beginning your excursions around the island; doing so will save you lots of wasted driving time. Although, if time must be wasted, what better place for it than paradise?Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

We don't get to this part of the island much, and it is a sweet paradise. Small town, gorgeous weather, kind and loving people. Our hosts at A Whale Crossing treated us like ohana. We felt connected with them from the start. The rooms are delightful. Comfortable bed - yay! The bathroom is separate yet easily gotten to barefoot in the night. Loved the outdoor shower. We had fruit and coffee for breakfast. We went to the Bamboo for dinner, a little uncertain of our choice because reviews suggested it was pricey. Compared with California fine restaurants, it was medium priced. Dinner for two with drinks and dessert came in at under $100. The food was outstanding. A lovely couple played slack key guitar, sang and danced, and they were phenomenal. They never told us who they were, and we did not find out until later we were listening to and watching John Keawe and his gracious wife Hope, world class musicians. For a wonderful getaway in the northern tip of the island, A Whale Crossing is a good choice if you appreciate casual and comfortable with aloha.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, romantic getaway.
