WHY COME TO SALTSPRING ISLAND?
Saltspring is the best of the Gulf Islands and is often called the Martha’s Vineyard of Canada because of the artists and writers who make it their permanent home. Several fine restaurants are available, as well as a Performing Arts Center, three bookstores, a cinema with first run movies, kayaking, sailing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking and back-packing. There is an excellent small hospital, the only hospital in the Gulf Islands. For the visiting scholar, the local library can obtain promptly any book requested from a Canadian inter-library loan.
THE PROFESSOR’S HOUSE
The PROFESSOR’S HOUSE, owned by a University professor, was designed by a Vancouver architect in a stunning Northwest style and completed in 1997. It is 2800 square feet and sits at the end of a path protected by gentle trees with a great sense of privacy. It is built with Western Red cedar, Douglas fir, island slate and sandstone. The house is executive quality and pleases anyone who appreciates beauty and comfort. All of the windows look out onto a stunning view of a large meadow and the water.
FIRST FLOOR: HARDWOOD FLOORS WITH KILIM RUGS
Living room: large stone fireplace and enormous bookcase, doors to terrace; Master bedroom: extra-large King, walk-in-closet, ensuite bath room, Jacuzzi tub and separate shower; Dining Room: doors to terrace and propane BBQ; Kitchen: fully equipped for real family cooking or visiting friends; Sun Room with TV, cable vision and DVD; Mud Room: washer/dryer, half bathroom.
SECOND FLOOR: WOOL BERBER CARPET, WALL-TO-WALL
Loft over living room with ample desk which can be used as an office as well as a sleeping area; Large bathroom with two sinks and shower; Big bedroom with queen-sized bed plus adult size window seat; Medium bedroom with queen-sized bed and rollaway beds.
HEATING SYSTEM
First floor: radiant floor heat, fireplace, pellet stove in sunroom. Second floor: baseboard heaters.
SEAVIEW: SOUTHWEST AND SUNNY
Green meadow filled with Big Leaf maples, Himalayan birches, arbutus, rhododendrons and azaleas. Bald eagles and families of deer frequent this private one and a half acre property.
TOTAL AMBIENCE: PRIVATE, QUIET, HEAVENLY
RENTAL: MONTHLY, QUARTERLY OR SABBATICAL LENGTH. Due to a local governance the required minimum stay is one month; however, if necessary to vacate under unforeseen circumstances a refund is available.
LOCATION: LOW IN CHANNEL RIDGE, 5 minutes BY CAR TO GANGES. Additionally, an extensive network of hiking trails borders the territory.
HOW TO GET TO SALTSPRING
Ferry from Victoria (Swartz Bay) or from Vancouver (Tsawassen), or float plane service from Seattle and Vancouver to Ganges Harbour.
