From bustling downtown Asheville, drive 5 min. through the Beaucatcher Mtn. Tunnel into pastoral Chunns Cove (between Town Mtn. Rd. and the Blue Ridge Parkway) to find Woodhaven, a cottage nestled amongst the trees on the side of the mountain.

In its own forest, micro-climate Woodhaven Cottages offers wildflowers in the spring, flowering mountain laurel & rhododendron, wild blueberries in the summer, and gorgeous foliage in the fall; this is a quiet retreat for 1-5 persons.

The gated deck and a screened-in porch wrap around on three sides and provides a tree house "feel" to the cottage. After a day of sight-seeing,hiking, mountain-biking or white-water, enjoy relaxing in the hot tub on the deck or rocking on the screened-in porch. Pick up dinner at one of the nearby Tunnel Road restaurants or have it delivered if you're not in the mood to cook.

Centrally-located to all of Western North Carolina, day trips are easily planned to Chimney Rock Park/Lake Lure, Biltmore House, the N.C. Arboretum, Smoky Mountain National Park, Mount Mitchell, Mount Pisgah, Sliding Rock, Banner Elk, and Grandfather Mountain. Asheville, Hendersonville, Black Mountain and other small towns provide ample shopping excursions. (Dancing Bear Toys, a specialty toy store & our family business is five minutes away and welcomes playful folks of all ages!)

Access to the attractions of downtown Asheville (Orange Peel, Civic Center, Pack Place, Pack Square & Park, etc.) are quick and easy. The area abounds with festivals, live music, theater, etc.

The cottage has available maps, bird books, brochures, and personalized suggestions for dining/activities are available at check-in.

No Smoking, please.

Woodhaven Cottage is located in the first mountain cove SE of downtown Asheville. All of the city attractions including the Biltmore Estate, Grove Pk. Inn, Grove Arcade, the restaurants of downtown and micro-breweries are all worth a visit. The area is surrounded by the Pisgah National Forest, Blue Ridge Parkway with Mt. Mitchell St. Park (highest point east of the Rockies) a 40 minute drive and Cherokee and the Great Smoky Mtns. National Pk. a 90 minute drive. There are a multitude of hiking, climbing, camping, and white water canoeing and kayaking opportunities in the National Forest and parks. The N.C. Arboretum offers formal and informal gardens as well as some paved trails and the adjoining Bent Creek recreation area is well known for its bike trails. During the winter season both Cataloochee Ski area in Maggie Valley and Wolf Laurel Ski area make snow for their downhill runs when mother Nature comes up short. Asheville is also the home of many fine restaurants, live entertainment including music ranging from bluegrass to symphony. The best known local showplace is the Orange Peel (about 7 minutes by car from Woodhaven). During the summer months Shindig on the Green is a free bluegrass jam that takes place every Saturday night in the park in front of City Hall and the Courthouse. Local and regional pickers gather to play informally around the edges of the crowd while cloggers and scheduled bluegrass bands play on the stage. ...morecollapse

Woodhaven Cottage was great for our family of 4. It was a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. We visited the Biltmore, Tupelo Honey Cafe, Fig Bistro, Over Easy Cafe, Sunny Point Cafe. The cottage was convenient to the store and all the restaurants.

This was an unexpected treat. I came from a month on Beech Mountain and found this cabin to be exquisite (once youmade it up the hill-not a small feat for a Florida girl!!!) I had watched the color come and go but here the Sourwoods (?) were beautiful Everything was so comfortable and well done.. pride showed in this home!! Screen porch was like being in the trees. Fresh potted plants, a welcoming bottle of wine (I hope it was for me!) a supply of firewood.) Warm and cozy!! I felt "taken care of" due to the calls and attention of the owners. I would have stayed longer had the weather not turned. Snow and rain mix the morning of departure. I shall definitely try to return.

The cottage is exactly as pictured. My two small kids loved the bunk beds and the games in the cottage. The location is nice: close to town but very isolated and scenic. We even saw three black bears from the front porch! We enjoyed the hot tub, the kitchen, and the wi-if as well. The house was very musty smelling, however-- or maybe it smelled like pets? We ended up airing the house out with opened windows and a fan, but it would still smell after our return each day. This was a concern for us due to allergies/asthma in the family. And as another reviewer commented, the road to the house is extremely pot-holed-- it clearly has not received any maintenance in a while, and seriously I would not feel comfortable driving a small or low-riding car on it.

Recommended for: Pet owners, families with young children.

Owner response: We wish the guests had chosen to tell us of "the funky smell" via a phone call or guest book entry instead of putting it into a review. The guest just prior to their visit had two large dogs that were apparently allowed free access to the BR's. Since being advised of the problem we have cleaned and deodorized the W/W carpeting in the BR's. We hope this will resolve the problem. As of April 20th, 2013 there is 100' of new road to Woodhaven. Charming cottage, lovely personal connection from the owners, hot tub on the deck looking up at flowering dogwoods, and just minutes to downtown. Property and amenities are as listed, well-kept and in good condition. For a country base to explore Asheville and the surrounding area this little hideaway is hard to beat.

Had a great stay at Woodhaven in early January. You feel you are miles away from the city but it's only 5 minutes away. At this time of year the woodburning insert was used quite frequently and kept us warm and cozy. We hope to come back during warmer weather and appreciate sitting on the deck and enjoying the views. Thank you for sharing your home with us.

We chose Woodhaven for its wooded mountain location, fireplace, hot tub, and screened-in porch. It was exactly as we expected it to be and pictured in the description by the owners right down to the bottle of Woodhaven wine we received upon arrival. We stayed at the Grove Park Inn the night before our arrival at the cottage and honestly would have preferred to have stayed at the cottage that night as well. We enjoyed Asheville while we were visiting. The drum circle on Friday night at Prichett Park was a unique experience and we highly recommend Zambra's Spanish Tapas Restaurant. Our visit featured a tour of the Biltmore House and Winery which we thoroughly enjoyed. Asheville has a great presence as a small city and staying at the Woodhaven Cottage makes it that much more enjoyable. We highly recommend that you contact Dave and Mary whenever you need a place to stay in Asheville -- you won't be disappointed. Marty and Terry

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2006

About the owner: My wife, Mary, and I, are semi-retired from our toy store (Dancing Bear Toys). We are natives of Illinois who are Tar Heels for the last 39 years, 10 in Charlotte and 29 in Asheville. We love the green, lush, WNC mountains and seem to appreciate them more each time we return from our travels.

                      Why the Owner Chose Asheville:
Our daughters owned this cottage for almost 10 years before "out growing" it. Its proximity to shopping, restaurants and everything that's best in Asheville as well as the quiet solitude it offers caused us to make them "an offer they couldn't refuse" when they decided to move to a larger home. We have recently re-modeled the kitchen and living room, screened the covered porch and added central heat & AC.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Besides the illusion of living in a "tree house" and the peace and quiet that pervades Chunns Cove, due to its location, Woodhaven Cottage has a unique "micro-climate" that is generally 5-10 degrees cooler than most of Asheville. The micro-climate is contributed to by its location on the south shoulder of one of the mountains forming the "dead-end" cove, the heavily wooded area surrounding the cottage and its altitude. Having a hot tub in this location is a luxurious bonus.
