Four of us stayed at the Frantoio for six days. If your considering this location we say- don't hesitate, just go. This is a case where the pictures don't do it justice or convey how beautiful the setting is. We were met by Linda and George and led to the property. I doubt I could have found it even with directions. It sits half way up a mountain with the most gorgeous views of the valley below. The unit itself was clean, modern, well equipped (our bedroom had a whirlpool tub in the ensuite bath). There was a booklet recommending restaurants, grocery stores and sights to see. On their recommendation we drove to Pontadera and took the train to Pisa and to Florence. We also spent a couple of days just hiking the mountain around us. We were treated warmly by the locals and when we left it was with great regret. We recommend this property and its managers very highly.

A wonderful holiday
A wonderful holiday
We stayed at the Frantoio for a week and had a wonderful time. The appartment (Maurino) was immaculate, clean comfortable and modern inside while the building retained it's authentic stone facade outside and some of the original timber beams inside. Some of the original olive oil workings were also still in the building. The kitchen facilities were excellent and we were able to cook many of our meals. The appartment is on three levels, so we more mature and less fit parents found the climb sometimes breathtaking, but the view from our bedroom window was also breathtaking, so we didn't mind and did get fitter as the week wore on! The Frantoio had an above ground pool set into a timber deck which looked very inviting, was always clean, but we were never there in the middle of the day when it was warm enough to enjoy it. Being Australian where the Bbq is part of our outdoor lifestyle, we missed the presence of a BBQ here, it would have been perfect to be able to cook and eat on the terrace and enjoy those views. Or perhaps since it is Tuscany a Pizza oven would be more appropiate? Our hosts Linda and George were very welcoming and supplied us with a bag of groceries and bottle of wine when we arrived to help us settle in which was a thoughtful gift. The Frantoio's location is very convenient to both Lucca and Pisa for sightseeing and also to Florence and while it is not too many kilometres to the train station you would definitely need a car for getting around. In fact, in light of the steepness and ruggedness of the access "road" try to have a car with a bit of ground clearance- our little hire car scraped the road a few times where the ruts were deep. Because of it's secluded location at the top of the hill this accommodation is ideal for those wanting some peace and quiet. It's not quite so good if you want to be in the middle of a town or village as you do have to drive to reach any shops. I would thoroughly recommend this accommodation, and would consider returning if we are ever in Tuscany again.

Owner response: Each of the apartments does have its own portable BBQ for guests to use on the terraces, we do however move them inside in inclement weather. Our access road is being repaired this winter.
Returned for a second visit!
Returned for a second visit!
We have just returned from a week at the Maurino apartment - we were there last year (we have NEVER tried to repeat a previous holiday!) It seems like our wonderful vacation last year was no fluke, the property is just as clean, wonderfully appointed and peaceful as it was last year. George and Linda do a great job of keeping the property up to scratch and work hard to ensure everyone has the best vacation possible. The new 5 x 3m above ground pool was perfect for cooling off in the heat of the day and was really welcomed. The restaurants in the area were just as good as previous with excellent food available at reasonable prices all served by friendly local folks - a real treat if you have ever suffered service and prices in the bigger italian cities. Our family can't wait for a chance to return and sample the delights of this property for a third time!

Luxury in Tuscany!
Luxury in Tuscany!
I stayed in Maurino apartment in August 2009 and what a fantastic week! This old olive mill has been restored beautifully with real charm yet total luxury. When you drive to the mill it is a bit off road however you will be totally surprised by the quality of the finishing and facilities. The apartment gave us direct access to the terrace with amazing views over the tuscan hills. The peace and quiet is excellent if you really want to get away from it all then this is the place. We went to Florence for the day by train from a local town and it was really easy and cheap, we would recommend that over driving to make it more relaxing. Although the villa is up a hill meaning you can't walk really to restaurants this didn't bother us at all, we went to the local wine shop and the deli's to get lovely food and there is a bbq available - what more did we need! I think this place will be perfect once the pool is put in this year and I will definitely be returning to try it out. A special comment to Linda and George who live just up from the Frantoio and service the apartments, they were extremely helpful advising us on where to visit and leaving their home grown vegetables outside the door for us - wonderful people!

About the owner: Scottish owners living in Edinburgh who travel regularly to sample the simple relaxation, food and great wine in Italy. Sunday at Alfredo's for lunch is special or go to Massi's or take a trip up to the Cinque Terre and do the 'Walk of Love' Could always go and see 'David' in Florence or walk in the hills or just sit on the terrace with a glass of wine and take in the views. Oh joy . Mind there is late night Salsa dancing in the summer at Alfredo's and then the Summer and Winter Festivals at Lucca and then the Palio at Bientina But then again might just sit on the terrace with my glass of wine I held my 60th Birthday party at the Frantoio in April and invited all the local Italian Neighbours and we played music and danced with our friends in the entrance hall at the Frantoio. Just a great place for a 'Big Birthday'
