A glorious, magical, historic space. Preserved in beautiful condition, but with a new kitchen and bathroom, new roof, washer/dryer, and simply but comfortably furnished. The barn is the birthplace of the Provincetown art colony. It was built in 1907 and used by Charles Hawthorne as a teaching studio. Very little has been changed! The main feature of the space is beautiful light from 4 sides, with the main, glorious north facade essentially a bank of windows.
The history is wonderful. Be sure to visit the web link at the bottom of this page, which describes much about Charles Hawthorne and the rich artistic history of the barn and the property.
We finished the restoration of the barn in the spring of 2013. The only real structural change we made was to add two interior bedrooms (both with windows on all sides) under the loft structure. We rehabilitated the infrastructure, reglazed the windows, etc etc. It now sleeps at least 4 in the two modest interior bedrooms (and also light-filled, each outfitted with a queen-sized bed and curtains) , plus a lounge area, including a double bed, in the loft.
The renovation involves new appliances, a new shower (opens up to the outside), new lighting, a new path to the barn, new electricity and plumbing. The barn itself is 30' X 40', and has a loft/mezzanine accessible by ladder as well as a small kitchen/bathroom addition originally built we-don't-know-when.
Please note that we are not ready yet to set the schedule for 2015. If you are interested in the barn, please email, and we'll get back to you when we know the availability -- which will probably be around the first of the year.
