Il Castelletto is set on a hill at the foot of the Apuane
Alps amongst olive groves, chestnut and oak forest. Everywhere you look you will be captivated by the splendid views that take in the entire valley below, leading to the shores of the near by Mediterranian sea and continuing to the Gulf of Portovenere.
Originally Il Castelletto was defensive stone tower built around 1400 to defend the nearby medieval Malaspina castle. Today it has been transformed into a beautiful and elegant holiday villa, restructured by the owner with great care and maximum attention to detail.
A harmony of colours pervade the interiors with walls plastered in traditional Tuscan pinks and yellows and the brilliant green and white of the local Carrara marble.
Many walls have been left bare to expose the ancient rough hewn stone work which combine with traditional terracotta floors, chestnut beam ceilings and a considered selection of old prints and antiques to create a warm and luxurious atmosphere.
ACCOMMODATION
Il Castelletto is on four floors:
Each floor is reachable either by internal stair case or by an internal panoramic lift. The villa is entered from a large external patio which is furnished with out door dining facilities and perfect for taking in the stunning panoramas.
On the ground floor entering from this patio you will find a new and functional brilliantly equipped kitchen adjacent to the dining room. Fine Persian carpets and gold leaf mirrors characterize this room which is a cosy place on winter days with the fire alight.
There is also beautiful wine cellar in stone and a powder room on this floor. On the same level but accessed from the exterior are two beautiful bedrooms which face out onto the big terrace. These bedrooms have en suite bathrooms with showers. Also on this level is a splendid sauna room and the Jacuzzi with hot water.
The main entrance on the first floor leads to an elegant living room with a fireplace in white Carrara marble. The comfortable sofas and armchairs are in complete harmony with the coloured walls which are a soft green.In the living room you can also find Satellite television and large windows that take in the magnificent and extensive views.
On the same floor there is a charming double bedroom with an en suite bathroom with a shower. A wooden staircase or the lift leads to the second floor where there are two romantic double bedrooms. Both of them have en suite bathrooms with showers. Going up to the fourth floor you reach the attic where there is a double bedroom with twin beds that can be joined on request and an en suite bathroom with shower. At your disposal is internet access with ADSL , satellite television, ceiling fans in every room, stereo with CD player and a selection of English books. There is also a dishwasher, washing machine and (not commonly found in Tuscany) a dryer.
On your arrival you will find a warm and welcoming greeting, the owner speaks perfect English and whilst being more than respectful f your privacy can organize breakfast and dinners on request, pleasant picnics and barbecues, guided excursions as well as walks on foot or by bike in the hills around the area.
THE GROUNDS
Outside the patio extends to a shaded open living area.Here the sofas and armchairs in rattan and a large dining table offer wonderful relaxation, liesurly breakfasts and the perdfect setting for romantic evening dinners over looking the panoramic swimming pool and out to the valley and sea beyone. The Castle Malaspina makes a charming accent.
The swimming pool area surrounded by olive trees and near to a patio that has a Jacuzzi. Il Castelletto is surrrounded by a large park (4000 meters or yards square) and its private car park is situated on the lawn right next to the villa.
The owner has arranged private consessions for his guests with : beach with cabin and umbrella, tennis, golf and squash.
For those who love silence and nature, for families and groups of friends, Il Castelletto is the ideal place for meeting to discover unusual intinerary and the antique flavours, the local food is excellent, not forgetting that at 10 minutes by car there is the sea, the elegant beaches of Versilia and the wilder ones in the Cinque Terre.
Thanks to the villa's strategic location you can easily reach interesting tourist and cultural sights both in Tuscany and in Liguria: Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio famous for its boutiques and night life, ( 15 minutes ) Pietrasanta, the historical and artistic capital of Versilia with the most famous statuary shops (5 minutes ) by car, Lucca (25minutes), Pisa (20 minutes), Florence (1 hour ), Carrara's marble quarries, the marvellous Cinque Terre (Five Lands), Golfo dei Poeti (Poets'Gulf), Portovenere, Portofino, Genova.
Handy ferries to Cinque Terre depart daily from the harbour of Marina di Massa (5 km ).

Ferdinando, This was the perfect setting for a get together of old friends. Your villa provided a perfect backdrop for our holiday. .......The kitchen was adequate and we were able to find most items we needed. We always forget to bring our knives, as it seems that is the one item(s) we truly miss. Problems or Bonuses The website cannot do the Il Castelletto justice. We were very pleasantly surprised at how much at home we felt and how beautifully decorated the villa was. We simply had a blast! To be surrounded by it's beauty, both inside and out, was a very pleasurable way to celebrate two 50th birthdays. Agency and Representatives (and price) Francesca at Sea and Country was very friendly and professional. We conducted our business by e-mail and she was very prompt and attentive. Recommended. Review by G Dever from England 6bed/6bath villa near Massa, Tuscany North -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When May 2009, 1 week Location Il Castelletto is on top of a hill looking down over the city of Massa and out to the Mediterranean sea. The location has superb views during the day or at night. We loved the area as it was very private. Nearby Amenities The drive into the city of Massa for groceries, restaurants, coffee bars, markets and shopping is five minutes. The House/Apartment The villa is a historical tower house and has been refurbished totally by the owner and it has won acclaim (not only by me!) for its decoration. You know as soon as you walk in that someone loves this home. The covered outside living area is perfect for dining alfresco and, well, living, which is what the 10 of us did most of the time we were there. There is also a living room with a TV that comes in handy when you want to spread out a bit. The villa can be very peaceful, but with 10 of us living under the same roof, the quiet was saved for the wee hours of the morning. The bedrooms are located on four levels with a lift to access the ones above the ground level. You can view the property directly: Il Castelletto. Garden Besides the covered living area, there is outside sitting space as well and it's close to the pool. It's easy to enjoy the pool, the hot tub, and the rest of the villa since they are nice and close. It's a compact arrangement, but there was plenty of room for all 10 of us to be in the outside area. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas The furnishings were of the ilk that would have been in our own homes. The villa is very clean and you have the option of a cleaner during the week if you desire. The 10 of us had no problems fitting around the dining table in the outside living area, which is protected with plastic should the weather dictate. It's easy to walk in and make yourself at home. Bedrooms/Bathrooms Each of the magnificently furnished bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, which is important for our group and one of the reasons we chose Villa Il Castelletto at first. Since the villa has been refurbished within the last two years, all the bathrooms were spotless and new. The beds feel nice and the linens were elegant and comfortable. Kitchen We cooked meals every night but one. Taking turns is always fun! Our refrigerator was kept teeming of local produce, wine and beer.Did you find this review helpful? The villa is located on a hillside overlooking the town of Massa and then further on, the Mediterranean sea. It is in a secluded location with a beautiful view. The villa is a restored 14th century watchtower for the nearby Malaspina Castle. The villa is in impeccable shape, gorgeously renovated with an indoor elevator and all modern amenities including six beautiful bathrooms with lovely Italian tiles. The location is wonderfully peaceful and quiet, on a private gated property with a few other private homes nearby which are not visible to the villa. There is a gorgeous outdoor gathering place with seating and dining tables large enough to accommodate our family of 11, covered by a lovely awning to allow remaining outside in any weather, also a private pool with gorgeous views and an outdoor hot tub. The house is absolutely beautifully furnished, clean, lovely, filled with gorgeous antiques. The owner has impeccable taste. The bedrooms are lovely and most beds are very comfortable with one or two a bit soft. There are six bedrooms and six bathrooms so there were obviously ample bathrooms, all lovely. The kitchen is perfectly functional with top of the line appliances and ample supplies. We used the kitchen every day and a private cook came and prepared delicious meals for us in the kitchen. The only surprises were good - the villa is even more gorgeous than the pictures reveal on the website. The owner is warm and helpful. We can't say enough good things! The agency was perfectly helpful, spoke English and represented the villa well. Obviously we recommend Il Castelletto! You do need a car and to feel comfortable driving on winding roads (though by no means treacherous), and be prepared to travel good distances by car to get to locations for sightseeing (though there are many fabulous places to visit in under an hour's driving). There are many wonderful towns to visit, the beach at Forte di Marmi (20 minutes), the Cinque Terre, lovely towns in the Apuane Alps and other gorgeous towns of the Italian Riviera. There is obviously also the many Tuscan towns not far, Lucca, Siena, Florence. If willing to get in your car and go, you'll never be able to visit all the wonderful towns nearby.
