A lovely house that truly did feel just like a home away: The well-equipped kitchen, comfy furniture, and warm fireplace were perfect for a cold rainy weekend. The overall feeling was one of warmth and welcome with interesting artwork and lightness with the many skylights. Unexpected and most welcome were the wonderful collection of books and videos. Despite being less than a block away from a busy street, the house was extremely quiet. The location was great: Less than 10 minutes to the art museum and shopping in Portland, just around the corner from Terra Cotta Pasta that supplied us with delicious take-out lasagna, soups, and roasted vegetables. Scratch Bakery provided delicious scones and breads for breakfast. We ate out less than we had planned because of the convenient kitchen and comfortable surroundings. Visitors should check out the Mad Horse Theater where we saw a terrific production of Lyle Kessler's" The Orphans." We certainly will recommend this place to our friends and hope to stay here again ourselves.

The little red bungalow is even better than described. It's very clean, well equipped, in a great location, and is extremely comfortable. Enjoyed the fireplace every morning with our coffee, and after our long walks in the brisk November air. Downtown Portland is a 10 minute drive. Fun city to walk around with great restaurants. South Portland is a neat area, including Fort Williams, Willard Beach, Bug Light, a couple of bakeries, a few good restaurants, and an ice cream shop. Read the reviews, they are accurate and descriptive of what you will find at Maggie's red bungalow. Of the dozens of vacation rentals we have stayed at over the years, this was the best.

We loved our stay at the Red Bungalow and highly recommend it to anyone coming to the Portland area. Maggie's home shows the love she obviously has for this unique home . It is without a doubt the most charming place we have ever stayed. The location was perfect for us, quick trips into Portland. A wonderful bakery I still dream about is very close by. When I think about the value of this rental it is unbelievable , see for yourself.

This was a much needed getaway and the bungalow made it a perfect place to return to at the end of each day. The location could not be better, as I walked to Portland light each morning for beautiful scenic pictures. The bungalow is cozy and equipped with every possible amenity. The neighborhood is quiet and safe and there are too many great restaurants within a 10 mile radius to mention, but they are listed in a book inside the bungalow. Maggie could not possibly be nicer and more accommodating. Make this your choice for your next vacation!

Driving north from Connecticut, we kept telling our little grandaughter that we were going to stay in a 'little red house'. We were delighted that the 'little red house' was exactly as advertised. She was very excited when we got there and we all loved that everything we needed was at our fingertips. Maggie couldn't have been nicer and we would definitely recommend it. Its proximity to downtown and the surrounding area and its central location made for a very relaxing stay. When we return to Maine, we hope the little house will be available.

There isn't enough room here for me to write how fantastic this house is or how phenomenal Maggie is to rent from. I've eyed this house for years but just haven't gotten the timing right to be able to stay here before. The house is everything you see in the pictures and more. Maggie's restoration of is spot-on and it has every touch you could want. The bedrooms are spacious, the bathrooms beautiful, the kitchen a dream, and the house was spotless. Someone else said it well - it's like staying at a friend's very cool house, minus the friend being there. If we could have stayed longer, we would have. Let me just say a couple of things about Maggie, aside from the fact that our family now officially considers her a long-lost friend. She is responsive, thoughtful, and totally on top of things. You won't find a nicer person to rent from. I should note - if you stay here, you MUST go to Scratch Baking Company (walking distance in nice weather, not so much during the snowstorm when we were there) and get takeout from Terra Cotta Pasta. Everything at both places is delicious and the prices are incredibly reasonable for the amount of food/size of baked goods and the high quality. The house is ten minutes from Portland and a convenient jumping-off point for all kinds of Maine adventures, from going to Willard Beach (again, walkable if there hadn't been a snowstorm) to hitting the outlets or exploring the Midcoast. I promise, you won't regret visiting Maggie's bungalow, and in fact you'll leave already plotting when you can get back! Thank you, Maggie, for an incredible vacation.

My family and I arrived at Maggie's on a warm, cloudless summer's day. Climbing out of our overpacked car we all headed in different directions. The grandkids leaped onto the rope hammock strung between to large shade trees. They quickly spilled out onto the grass below, laughter binding them together. The responsible more task oriented adult unpacked the car. I being more creative and curious snaked my way up the lush green path to the covered front porch. Flanking the front door was a wooden swing for two that hung from the large beams and several soft chairs. As I stepped into the red bungalow, kicked off my sandals, a smile crossed my lips. My eyes surveyed a cheerful and vey creative home. I sank into the dark leather sofa and noticed the fireplace. I opened the French doors leading to a very generous back porch. Continuing into a tranquil garden retreat, my thoughts listened to the quiet surroundings. On all sides neighbors yards were buffered by trees and bushes. I could already smell my morning coffee in this heaven. Soon everyone came roaring into the impeccable, sun filled kitchen. I could almost smell my granmother's apple pie cooking in the oven. The grandkids chose their beds upstairs and were intrigued by the large bathroom tub set under an amazing skylight. The kitchen and bathrooms were well stocked with food staples, shampoos and a hair dryer. Stomaches started to growl. As we walked to Willard Beach, we stopped for lunch at Scratch Bakery. The kids played on the beach playground, others dipped their toes in the cool, velvety water. In the distance a ferry boat motored it's way to one of over 200 islands. I took a mental note of our next adventure, a picnic at Peaks Island. This was one of our most relaxing, enjoyable and adventurous vacations we have experienced as a family. Returning to Maggie's welcoming home after a day of adventure or a picnic on the rocks, was icing on the delicious cake.

This place is exactly what we hoped for, and exactly how it is described. It's clean, well equipped, in a great location, has comfortable furnishings, and dog-friendly. Our pup found the dog bed in minutes, and laid out in front of the beautiful fireplace every morning while we read, drank our coffee, and leisurely enjoyed bagels from Scratch. The back and front yards are so beautiful that I hope to return again in a summer month! Downtown Portland is an honest 8-10 minute drive, but we found plenty to do right in South Portland, including Fort Williams, Willard Beach, Bug Light, and a couple cute shops to check out while walking to and from Scratch. We really loved the house. It is a modern, cozy, cottage with all the amenities you could ask for. Plus, Maggie is great, and pleasure to communicate with. You should stop looking for a place to stay and book with Maggie now. :)

The property is so beautiful and well thought. Small and confortable, sweet and lovely. We had a marvelous time in this house and Maggie, the owner is so helpful. You hesitate to rent this house? Don't! You will have so quite holidays and a really great time in South Portland. It's like staying in a friend's home. And last but not least, the house is at a walk distance from Willard Beach (really cool in the morning for our quiet Newfie), from a really nice cafe (you must taste the moka one) and from THE bakery and THE ice cream shop of the area. It's the best place I had in Maine and It's sure we will come back!

                              Owner info

                              Year Purchased: 2004

About the owner: Hi! My name is Maggie and welcome to the little red bungalow! I'm in my late 30s and my family comes many, many generations from Maine on both sides - my mom from a long line of dairy farmers and my father from generations of sea captains and fishermen. He was the first generation NOT born on Cranberry Island. Instead, he was born in the bustling village of Southwest Harbor on Mount Desert Island. I myself am a builder and designer and the little red bungalow is my version of heaven.

Why the Owner Chose South Portland:
Why this property? Well, have you ever just walked through a door and thought, can there be a more perfect house than this? I've designed and built many welcoming spaces but this one is my favorite and I will own it for the rest of my life! I LOVE sharing this home with travelers and nothing makes me happier than reading the guest book after you leave! As many guests have commented, it truly is a 'slice of heaven' and while I'm sure I'm biased, the reviews are not! Please come visit!

The Unique Benefits at this Bungalow:
There is a lot that made me fall in love with this house. From walking up the stone walkway out front through the amazing landscaping, to stepping up on the fir wood of the front porch and swinging on the porch swing that my dad made me, to launching myself into the hammock in the front yard, I don't even have to step through the front door to feel like I'm home. I no longer live there but I could never sell this little oasis. Portland is an amazing town to visit and this house is a perfect spot to just setting in to and relax - whether you're looking for some downtime away from your own home or if you're here for a wedding or looking a place to vacation or just want a warm, welcoming, well-designed house to escape to for movie watching, cooking and resting - this is the spot! The clawfoot tub under the skylite helps too :)
