A vintage 1905 Edwardian home set amidst a historic cluster of other Victorian houses, our light green building trimmed in cream and gold, is a stately survivor of the Great Quake and Fire of 1906. With original turn-of-the-century architectural decor, beautifully restored red oak hardwood floors, and brass chandelier light fixtures, this spacious flat occupies the entire second floor of the building.
It has two bedrooms, a split bath, large living room, dining room, kitchen with breakfast table, and laundry room. Conveniently located in the geographic center of San Francisco and just steps from Golden Gate Park and public transportation, it is a perfect home-base for vacation, business travel, or creative quietude.
We are an old San Francisco family. Our family name, Aoki, translates to "blue tree," so we call our place "The Blue Tree" in honor of our grandfather who came here from Japan in the 1880’s and was a founder of San Francisco Japantown. My husband is a composer and I am a professional storyteller, performer.
Treasures from our world travels, old jazz and theater prints, and original art by our talented soon-to-be-famous friends add to the comfortable spirit of our place. Many international artists have come to "The Blue Tree" for rejuvenation and creation. Because we too travel a lot, we understand the need for both tranquility and quick access to the delights of the city.
We love our living room. Soft natural light from the large bay windows fills the room, while the tea-green chenille sofa (a queen size sofa-sleeper), the Oriental rug on the red oak floor, and the cozy warmth of the potbelly gas stove in the fireplace add to your relaxing comfort. An antique cinnabar Chinese cabinet stores the television with cable, DVD and VCR. There's Wi-Fi internet connection for your convenience.
The two spacious bedrooms, each with an orthopedic queen bed, lots of pillows, colorful comforters and luxurious Egyptian cotton sheets, also offer a private, quiet area to enjoy the spectacular sunsets with a glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge. In one bedroom sits Grandpa's antique Chinese dresser, while the other has a dresser and highboy. Delicate floral vintage prints decorate the walls.
Our creamy white kitchen is fully equipped with a gas stove, microwave, coffee maker and toaster. You can easily find all your cooking needs, from pots and pans, handy appliances, utensils, linen and silverware. Nestled next to the kitchen window is a charming breakfast table & chairs.
In the dining room, a family heirloom table can seat up to eight. You may choose from pure white dinnerware or vintage china, hand picked along my travels. With two large windows, an antique gold velvet sofa, and a library of San Francisco history, it is yet another spot to relax.
The bathroom, a "split bath," has soaps, bath salts, lotion, and plush towels for your bath or shower. A separate laundry room has a washer and dryer.
"The Blue Tree" is perfect for relaxing or exploring. Our Lone Mountain neighborhood is at the hub of major public transportation lines that get you anywhere in the city within minutes -- the Pacific Ocean, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, Japantown, Union Square, downtown, or any of the myriad of San Francisco's special places.
Our neighborhood is especially popular for leisure exploring. With the Golden Gate Park nearly your backyard, you are only a stroll away from acres of botanical beauty, the Japanese Tea Garden and arboretum; recreational pleasure with boating and hiking; free Sunday summer concerts in the bandshell; and, if you are an early bird, there's Tai Chi with Chinese masters at sunrise. Across the Park are trendy cafes, restaurants, bookstores and boutiques.
Within blocks of "The Blue Tree" are many delis, cafes, restaurants, and shopping as well. If keeping fit is your passion, one of the city's best gyms is a stone's throw away. It features an Olympic size swimming pool, weight room, exercise machines, racketball, classes of all sorts. Several well known Yoga centers are within walking distance.
Ideally located to nurture both body and soul, and to access any of the city's delights, "The Blue Tree" can help make your vacation or business trip a truly San Francisco Experience.
