Our family of seven had a wonderful time at the Sugar Shack. We stayed at a five star resort on Kauai, but we loved the Sugar Shack the most. It felt very homey Hawaiian. You have eveything you need for exploring the island, snorkle equipment, boogie boards, coolers and even rain coats. We spent most of our time around the beautiful oceanfront pool. The outdoor kitchen was so handy for our drinks and snacks. The tropical, lush grounds and view of the ocean were amazing!! Right across the street was a great boogy boarding beach and down the road a great snorkling beach. We saw turtles everywhere. J made it so easy to book Sugar Shack and spent alot of time giving me all the information I needed. This is truly Paradise!!! We hope to come back again.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

14 of us, 6 kids and 8 adults, stayed at the Kona Sugar Shack and there was ample enough room for all of us, we never felt crowded. The house was perfect, we had all the suites except Mango and all were very nice, there were 3 kitchens in all, we only used the anniversary suite and the honeymoon suite kitchens. The outdoor kitchen in the honeymoon suite was perfect for everything we did around the outdoor oceanview pool and the anniversary suite had a huge kitchen where we could all get around quite easily, it had access to the outdoor patio which overlooked the ocean as well. That patio was beautiful and we used it alot. The description of the property is very accurate. All amenities were included, all we had to add was food. There was ample boogie boards, water shoes, sand toys, beach chairs, towels, pretty much anything we would have wanted for going to the beach or sitting around the pool was there. J and John were very accomodating, helped us to find great restaurants and places to see. The house is located just a 2 minute walk across the road to a great beach where you can boogie board, see lots of turtles or just relax on the sand. We ate at a restaurant called Sam Choy's, that is just a few minute drive away, up on top of a cliff overlooking the ocean. It looks like just another chain restaurant from the outside but the view is incredible and the fireplaces at your table are awesome, and the food was my favorite meal of the trip. The property was very clean, everything was in working order, beds were very comfortable, some of the kids slept on the smaller beds that were couches during the day and made into beds at night and found them very comfortable as well, they could easily sleep one adult. I would recommend this property in a heartbeat and can't wait to return myself. Thanks J and John for making our stay so awesome!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The Kona Sugar Shack was absolutely amazing! We loved every minute we spent there! Walk less than a block to Magic Sands beach and snorkel with sea turtles, or grill on the deck by the pool with an amazing ocean view. Jae and John provided excellent recommendations of places to explore. Their recommendations ended up being our favorite things we did on the Big Island. They are such gracious hosts, and we would highly recommend the Kona Sugar Shack. We would absolutely stay there again!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Jae and John were fabulous hosts. The view from the Honeymoon Suite is awesome (sunsets in front of you) and the water is about 100' away. Magic Sands beach(s) a VERY short walk for great boogie boarding and snorkeling. They have all the toys to take to the Beach included, masks, snorkles, boogie boards, mats, coolers, sunbrellas etc. First Class accomodation. We WILL go back there again and highly recommend the location. We had a GREAT stay. Lenny and Deneen, Victoria, B.C.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Hi. Me and 3 friends stayed at Kona Sugar Shack Vacation Inn for 3 days in beginning of March. The place was awesome with nice rooms, nice outdoor area and with a great location across the road from a very nice beach. The hosts were also superb by recommending places to go and things to see, making our trip epic. =)Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My husband and I have just returned from a brief stay at the Kona Sugar Shack and only wish we had been able to stay there longer. It is a delightful place in every way and the hosts, John and Jae could not be nicer! We had the Mango Suite and even though it is at the back, we loved it. Everything was so clean, well maintained and thoughtfully furnished. The lush landscaping is beautiful and sitting by the pool in the morning or at night looking out at the ocean was such a treat. We're already planning our return to the Sugar Shack!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

We stayed in the Mango Suite at the Kona Sugar Shack and it was delicious! All of our needs were more than met. Jae and John are warm wonderful people. Great location across the street from a Hawaiian sacred site and beach park. Sunsets by the pool, evening tiki lights, snorkeling, boogie boarding and tropical breezes through beautiful grounds. Our stay was heavenly. Mahalo.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

My daughter and I stayed at the Kona Sugar Shack for 8 wonderful days earlier this month (January 2009). It is a unique and beautiful place to stay near Kona town. You are out of the noise and bustle of town, yet close enough to take a quick trip in to a restaurant or to go shopping. The Sugar Shack is directly across from White Sands beach, so all you need to do is grab towels, snorkels, boogie boards, etc. from the inn's stock (free!) and head over. The innkeepers make sure you have everything you need and are a great resource for tips on the Big Island's sights. Try it if you are tired of the anonymity of the big resorts!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Staying at the Sugar Shack is like having your own property in Kona. It was quiet, nicely decorated and had the the most wonderful pool that I enjoyed alot. The beach was right there for the whole experience. We wanted for nothing. The kitchen had everything you could ask for, the bed was comfotable, there was TV and internet service. The grounds are lucious. Jae and John are the sweetest people you would ever want to meet. WE WILL BE BACK FOR SURE!!!!!!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We spent three of our best days on Hawaii in the Ocean Suite at the Sugar Shack Inn. Everything from the host's Jae & John to the pool were wonderful! Everything you want in a home away from home & then some. From to the lanai & view, to the pool, Bar-B-Que, art work, and a fully appoined kitchen, this place is the best! Not to mention the view, and location to beaches, plus beach chairs, coolers & boogie boards! Nice bed & shower, too! Mahalo Jae & John!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

we are ready to book our next trip to kona based upon the amazing stay we had at the sugar shack. the location was perfect while we were on the big island for the ironman. the room was beautiful... comfortable beds, did not even use the A/C because there were ceiling fans throughout and the ocean breeze from across the street kept a constant tropical flow of air. we enjoyed the pool at the sugar shack daily and also used the grill several evenings. our suite was immaculate. the two bathrooms in the suite we stayed in each had granite countertops and beautiful river stone flooring in guest bath. the accomdations were very high end and the owners we're first class all the way! we know we will be back next year without a doubt!Did you find this review helpful? Aloha! We just returned from a wonderful vacation to Kona to celebrate my parents 45th wedding anniversary. John and Jae graciously opened up their home to 14 of us (8 adults and 6 kids) and were the best hosts that we could have asked for. The Sugar Shack was VERY well stocked with kitchen items, beach toys and other gear which made our stay very comfortable - even with little children. John and Jae checked in with us several times to make sure we had everything we needed, and had great suggestions on places to visit and eat. The Sugar Shack is in a fantastic location - close to beaches, snorkeling and town. Even with all of these wonderful things around, the kids had the best time playing in the beautiful pool. This truly was a dream vacation and a celebration that I'm sure my parents will never forget. Mahalo, John and Jae! We will be back!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

The Sugar Shack is a home away from home, meaning that you are a guest in a very well appointed, great setting, close to Kona, but enough separated to be quiet in the evening. Across from the State Park, with its great beach and snorkeling, close to great restaurants, coffee plantations, and with a really nice pool overlooking the ocean, what more could one want? Actually, great hosts, who open their home into a guest house and make your experience of Kona all the more personal. Great for families, couples, whomever is looking for an alternative to big resorts and for a lower key, laid back experience.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Twelve of us rented the entire Sugar Shack for a week and were so delighted with the atmosphere of the place. It was spacious enough that we didn't feel we were in each others way. The outside kitchen and eating area were truly 'Hawaii'. Thanx Jae & John for your wonderful hospitality.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Our family just spent a wonderful week at the Kona Sugar Shack. Eight of us rented the entire Ocean Suite as well as the Mango suite and we had plenty of room. The kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, and common areas were tremendously equipped and nicely decorated. Perhaps our favorite (and definitely most used) feature was the balcony off the front of the Ocean Suite where we enjoyed every meal along with an ocean view. The property is conveniently located across the street from Magic Sands Beach at which we enjoyed for boogie boarding, snorkeling and letting the kids play in the sand. We also drove south a few miles to another snorkeling cove and north a few miles to a few restaurants. When we were tired of exploring, returning to relax around the pool was just what the doctor ordered. It was the perfect size for our 2 and 5 year old to splash and have fun with us and their grandparents. Topping off the vacation was the hospitality provided by the owners of the Sugar Shack, Jae and John. They made sure we were comfortable and (on top of it all) provided an adventure for our son by having him track the ripening of the bananas and papayas on the property and picking them when ready. It was a fabulous place to stay and we look forward to returning.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

The Sugar Shack on Alii Drive is amazing and it’s Owners Jon & Jae are two of the kindest people on Earth. My fiancé & I came to the big island for his father’s memorial. Jon & Jae kindly let us book a room at their beautiful hotel at the very last minute when no one else could/would. Aside from this kindness the room was amazing. The large shared lanai in front is beautifully maintained, the pool is cooling and refreshing, and watching the sunset from the little bit of heaven brought us much needed peaceful moments. The Sugar Shack is conveniently located right across the street from Magic Sands Beach and boogie boards, rafts, and towels are generously provided to guests who want a little fun in the sun. The room that we had was very comfortable with it’s privet deck, king sized bed, and newly remodeled bathroom, it was very nice be able to go back to the Sugar Shack at the end of several very long days. I would stay here again and again and recommend it to anyone staying on the Big Island.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We spent 4 nights and had a wonderful time there. Jae and John are great hosts- very hospitable and friendly. Jae made sure we had everything we could need and John's artwork is displayed thru the entire apartment. We stayed in the Ocean suite and had so much room! It was beautiful. I would stay there again and hope to be able to return.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0
