Stykkishólmur is a small town located on the north coast of Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Stykkishólmur is renowned for its remarkable nature and has become one of the most popular destinations in Iceland. The diversity of nature is something nature lovers should not miss seeing, its spectacular surroundings, green valleys and rugged lava fields to name a few. In summer, daily sightseeing trips go out in the fjord on the Sæferðir boats, while the ferry Baldur connects Snæfellsnes with the West Fjords with daily sailings to Brjánslækur.
Old houses that have been well preserved have a great influence on the appearance of downtown Stykkishólmur. Snæfellsness Folk Museum is located downtown and is the oldest building in Stykkishólmur, there you can buy souvenirs and handicrafts made by craftspeople from Stykkishólmur or even attend exhibitions put on by Museum or artists.
Library of Water is an interesting museum situated at a place with spectacular view. The museum is a constellation of 24 glass columns containing water collected from ice from some of the major glaciers around Iceland. Snæfellsnes Glacier is located in Breiðafjörður Bay, and is only in 45 min drive away from Stykkishólmur.
The Volcano museum just opened last year and is still expanding its activity. It is open from 11-17 during the summertime and you can get an introductory talk daily from one of Iceland’s finest volcanologist, Haraldur Sigurðsson.
Right now a new exhibition has just opened in the Volcano museum, which obviously has the theme: Eyjafjallajökull. There are many photographs of both the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull and its consequences as well as of the minor eruption on Fimmvörðuháls. In this exhibition you can see photos from one of Iceland’s most renown photographer RAX, or Ragnar Axelsson, who has dedicated his career as a photographer to the nature of Iceland.
