In 2009, I got to build my dream house. Following an act of bravery and stupidity, in 1999 I bought an acre of land in a foreign country that was largely unknown to the world at that time. It shone in my mind and my fantasy, but it took me a decade the find the right architect and make enough money busting my hump in a law firm in Boston to begin to build the house.
Construction was completed in 2011 and it was everything I wanted it to be. Guillermo Garita of Datum Zero translated the vision and hopes into wood, steel concrete, windows, light, air, views and heaven. I told him when we started 'serene, airy and welcoming'. We got it.
Ecologically friendly
The house is built on piles to minimize the footprint and allow animals to continue to pass through the property. Only one retaining wall was built, and it with a minimal profile. No mature hardwoods were cut during the development or construction of the property. No PVCs, lead, or gallium was used in the construction.
The floors are made of locally sourced, sustainable harvested teak. The concrete a less dense fly ash composite. The house is passively cooled by being raised off the ground, aligned to the trade wind, and the provision of through-ways in the gallery, kitchen and bedrooms where air can circulate. The tower is cor-ten rusting steel that minimizes bleed and the necessary replacement time while interacting with the environment.
Layout
An intersection between horizontal and vertical elements. The horizontal is dominated by woods and soft hues and extends into the rain forest. It contains the kitchen, gallery, living room, and guest rooms. The vertical element also shares the kitchen, houses the master bedroom at the ground level, then soars over the jungle, with a mezzanine, dedicated zendo, and terrace giving stunning views at each level.
