The Stewart House is in the village of Grand Pre, a lovely, pastoral hamlet. Although the apple orchards are being replaced by vineyards, the rolling green hills of the Annapolis Valley extend from a ridge called the South Mountain to the powerful waters of the Bay of Fundy. Originally settled by the Acadians in the 1650s, the area was designated as Canada's first rural heritage district for its "rural beauty, historic significance, and large number of heritage properties." It is currently being considered as a UNESCO world heritage site.At the Stewart House, you are within walking distance of the the Grand Pre Historic Site, the Acadian-built dykelands, apple orchards and the shores of the Bay of Fundy. The Domaine de Grand Pre winery was the very first vineyard in the Valley, and the reputation of its wines and cider is enhanced by a fine restaurant and a lovely terrace. At the center of the village is a general store, gas station and the cafe at the Evangeline Motel, famous for its pies and chowder. At the other end of the village is enchanting Tangled Gardens and Just Us Coffee, a relaxing place for a coffee or tea.Originally built in 1779, the Stewart House is a carefully restored heritage home, combining Nova Scotia art and antiques with modern comfort. The classic colonial design, fine woodwork, hard and softwood floors exemplify the artistry of a bygone era. It is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet, or gather some friends and family for a festive sojourn.3 doubles, 2 twins, 1 sleeperGrand Pre is about fifty minutes from the international airport just outside Halifax, 1 hour from the City, and 90 minutes from the beautiful South Shore, with Peggy's Cove, Chester, Mahone Bay, and Lunenburg. Grand Pre is only minutes from the town of Wolfville and Acadia University. Wolfville offers several good restaurants, a movie theatre, bars and pubs as well as art galleries, book stores, a yoga center and an excellent video store. The Saturday morning farm market is irresistible, a magnet for local farmers and vendors across the Valley. By car, you're within easy reach of fresh and salt water beaches, historic sites and museums, whale watching, cycling, hiking, kayaking, and rock hounding. The area is richly endowed with artist studios, antique stores, farm markets and wineries.Rates:05/01-06/26 $2,000/week $1500/each addtl week06/26-08/28 $2,500/week $1750/each addtl week08/28-10/09 $2,000/week $1500/each addtl week
