We found this the perfect place to get some r & r. We were really looking foward to taking a hike and spend some time with mother-earth but it rained most of our stay there. Yet we found the cabin had everything we needed to relax. We spent most our time just on the deck enjoying the rain and each other's company. Its a great home away from home for anyone wanting to get away from the city life and just wanting to have some quality time. The area is sooo quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed our stay very much.

This is a very nice cabin that is very kid friendly. Only downside is the horse farm and junky rv's/tents adjoining the property. The river access is sometimes clogged by these people. The house is great, but not recommended if you're the serious fisherman.
Owner response:Thank you for your kind comments about our cabin. We are sorry that you were bothered by the neighboring property. That is not our property and we have no control. Our lot is more than two acres and we keep it maintained for our guests enjoyment. We also cannot control the river. For serious fisherman, I would reccomend spring or fall when the property is more secluded.

What a great place to stay! My guests included 4 adults ages 22 and 2 children ages 16 months. We stayed the weekend at the shady river cabin and had a great stay. We arrived a little late and found the cabin to be waiting for us. We didn't need to leave for anything! The kids were able to run in the yard and even got to see horses next to us. The Picketts were so helpful from the time we placed the reservations untill we left. The cabin was so much fun we didn't even need to leave to find things to do because we enjoyed just being there. We all didn't want the weekend to end at all and also said we wish we could have stayed longer. We will be staying at the cabin many more times when we want to go somewhere! Hands down one of our most memorable vacations!

We've stayed in cabins/houses all up and down the Blue Ridge in VA and NC but Shady River was one of the best; the house itself is immaculate and layed out just right for throwing your stuff down and relaxing. The property lends itself to sitting on the deck in the morning with your coffee and just thinking about nothing. We spent all of our afternoons sitting by the river, letting our dog enjoy the wide open spaces and throwing some horseshoes. After dinner (grilling something each night) we went to the firepit on the river and poked the fire for 2-3 hours. More star's in the sky than we've seen in a long time. Robert came by and showed us around, got the grill going and made sure we had firewood ready to go for our fires each night. Working with the Picketts was wonderful. We had such a good time we extended our vacation one extra night...we didn't want to leave. Fantastic parks all around, great hiking, went horseback riding; the whole nine yards. If you stay here you'll be back like we plan on doing. By the way, the grocery store "Food Country" is a great little supermarket, you don't need to go into Wytheville if you don't want to drive that far. GREAT TIME! BK Morgan, VABCH
Owner response:Thank you very much. We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay. October is another great time to visit the cabin. The days are cool and the leaves are beautiful. If you are looking for seclusion, winter is the time. All of the summer people have gone and it is very quite and peaceful, especially if we have snow.

This is a wonderful place to get away. It is so peaceful and out of the fast lane while being only about eight miles from the interstate. Everything was spotlessly clean and so comfortable. Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We (2 young married couples) had great time at Shady Rive Cabin. It was so quite and relaxing. We enjoyed the camp fire at night. It was rainnig 2 days straight before we arrived, so river was pretty muddy, but other than that it was perfect getaway from the busy city life. We had great time just staying home for most of the stays, playing board games and table tennis.
Recommended for:Romantic getaway.

When we planned a short getaway to the mountains, we wanted to stay somewhere comfortable and private, where we could relax and feel at home. For about the same price as a nice hotel/motel we had our "own" place, complete with a view of the New River, the New River trail out the back door and peace and quiet, none of which we would have gotten renting a room. We loved the openness of the kitchen/living area and all the windows looking out. The owners were very helpful and kind, and we would definitely stay there again and highly recommend it to friends/family.

My family and I really enjoyed the week we spent at Shady River Cabin, 9-16 July 2008. We found the home very clean; fully equiped with all our needs in the kitchen; to include supplies never expected; the home was well laid out, plenty of room to spread out and all facilities worked. The owners even picked up trash during our stay. Much fun was enjoyed by all on the river, fishing and tubing. My grandchildren also enjoyed some nearby recreational areas, Foster Falls and The Zoo. All in all, we were very pleased and hope to revisit next year.
