We had a wonderful fall weekend at this picturesque lake house. The cottage is immaculate with lovely decor that greatly compliments this tranquil setting. There are many darling antiques and original artwork in the house. The master suite has a breathtaking view of the lake. A spacious screened in porch allows the visitor to watch the changing moods and lighting of the lake. The lake house is well equipped with all of the needed comforts. The kitchen is fully stocked with a compliment of amenities needed to prepare any meal. The beds were very comfortable and the linens are well stocked. There is much to do in the immediate area. We rented a boat and enjoyed the extensive and gorgeous lake. There was a trip to the state park to take in a spectacular waterfall. We dined at several restaurants in the area that had delicious cuisine and nice wine selections. We highly recommend The Allen Cottage for a lovely vacation. This getaway spot is truly a gem. You will leave with special memories of the breathtaking scenery and feelings of tranquility from your intimate contact with nature.Recommended for: Girls getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Vivian, thanks so much for your review. I am humbled by your comments. Our cottage is very special to us but in addition we both are designers with professional careers in architecture and commercial interiors. This kind of feedback is so reassuring that the results of our efforts to make this a special place for our family also speaks to our guests as well.

We only have great things to say about our experience at Lake Burton. This house was perfect for us. Very clean and comfortable with everything we needed. We had a blast during our stay. We saw a bear! (mountain roadside) Caught many fish, rented a jet ski and a ski boat and enjoyed the canoe. I highly recommend this cottage to families. Very clean and comfortable. If you are looking for a great place to eat while at the Lake I can also recommend The Chophouse at LaPrade Marina. The food was out of this world! We did not know much about local restaurants and decided to try it. You will not be disappointed. To sum it up, all was wonderful and the cottage owner was very helpful and a pleasure to work with.Recommended for: Girls getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Amy was very pleasant and easy to work with and was very excited about coming to Lake Burton. I am so pleased that our cottage could be included in her plans. While I always hesitate to recommend restaurants, I'm very happy to pass along this recommendation of Amy's.

I just wanted to write to tell you how pleased we were with your family cabin on Lake Burton. We found everything in our accommodations that we needed and more. Had some time read / peruse some of your books. The inside was beautifully decorated and we thoroughly enjoyed the time we were there. I personally enjoyed the peacefulness of the lake and taking walks on the road around the lake. Just a note for your information, we were visited by a bat on the second evening inside the second floor study. I was able to catch him in a towel and out of the house he went. The second floor fireplace flue was open and suspect he flew down to take a look around. I closed it to prevent future appearances. Such fun in the country, except Deborah was not amused. Frank Our week at your lovely home was a step back in time for me to my middle/high school summer vacations on Lake Burton. We were able to reconnect and reminisce with friends/family in the area while enjoying the lake. We loved the well equipped kitchen that enabled us to share meals with our friends who are cooks and bring back frozen local berries. It was such an enjoyable relaxed week! We hope to return in the future. DeborahRecommended for: Girls getaway, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Frank and Deborah. You are delightful people and a joy to work with. You took good care of our little piece of heaven and you seemed to enjoy your stay as much as we do when we are there. Frank, I especially enjoyed your good humor and the kind way you rescued the poor lost bat. "Check the Dampers" is now on our check list. We do not want to cause that kind of excitement for Deborah or another bat. I look forward to your return in the future.

Our family of four arrived from England after a long journey and were delighted to find this perfect house! Bob was always very helpful in planning our trip and gave good advice whenever it was needed. The cottage is extremely homely, clean and comfortable, the kitchen was very well equipped and the view perfect. The outdoor room was the ideal spot to eat and watch the world of the lake pass you by. We rented a boat and taught the children to water-ski, they had loads of fun tubing and then we would pile home for a BBQ. The lake water is delightful to swim in and the house is ideally situated a few steps from the waters edge. The nature around the area is beautiful and interesting - a bear was our best spot! The whole family enjoyed this holiday enormously and we are already planning a return trip!Recommended for: Girls getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, families with teenagers.
Owner response: It is always good to receive a review from a guest who traveled from Europe and see what they think of our accommodations. Lake Burton and the Northeastern Georgia Mountains. We think it is all special but it's ours and love is sometimes blind. These folks were delightful guests.

7/30/11. My husband and I just spent the last week with our three grandchildren, ages 6,8, and 11 in this very lovely and comfortable home. We had a very enjoyable time swimming, canoeing, fishing, and cooking out at the house. Our meals were greatly enjoyed on the screened porch overlooking the water. We loved the close proximity of the house to the water. My grandson and I made plans in the evening to wake up early and take the canoe out while the water was was calm. We had lots of nice conversation paddling around the cove. There are many other actinides to do in the area. We rented a pontoon boat for the day at LaPrades Marina which is great way to tour the entire lake. We also hiked at Tallulah Falls State Park which has beautiful waterfalls, and an interpretive center with a great wildlife exhibit. The GA Mountain Railway is about an hour and half away in Blue Ridge which was a full day of sight seeing through the area country side. It was fun, but would highly recommend a spring or fall trip to avoid the hot temperatures. I would certainly recommend this home to family and friends. Being an interior designer myself, the heading for this home listing caught my eye, and we found the pictures and description of the house were just as we found it. It was clean, beautifully furnished, and very comfortable. The antiques and artwork certainly added charm and character. I love a home that reflects the interests and activities of the family. It was perfect for our family.Recommended for: Girls getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, families with teenagers.
Owner response: What a delightful family to have as guest in our Lake Burton home. We had many conversations as well as email exchanges and from their review it seems that they took full advantage of our location to enjoy many of the activities and adventures that our beautiful Lake Burton and Northeast Georgia Mountains have to offer.

Last fall as a treat for my International visitor, I selected this property for an introduction to the beautiful North Georgia mountains and the the peaceful waters of Lake Burton. I couldn't have made a better choice! We enjoyed the very comfortable home, the property, the view, the amenities, and the surrounding communities tremendously. My visitor, who only had three weeks to spend in Georgia, went away with nothing but kind words and a positive impression of the wonders of this part of the state and raving about the warm and inviting home and how at home she felt in it. Thanks for the incomparable experience. Can't wait to visit it again.Recommended for: Girls getaway, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Lil and her visitor from Down Under were perfect guests. Our maid service said you could hardly tell anyone had been there. they left the house if perfect order.

My family and I just recently returned from a 9-day vacation at this lovely home on Lake Burton. The Lake House was everything we had hoped it would be with the beauty, charm and character of a true lake experience but the conveniences of today's living. There were a total of six people in our party arriving and departing at various times. Ages ranged from 23-78! We did not have any children present but the lake house would nicely accommodate young families. Our host Bob could not have been nicer in responding to our many inquiries for our highly anticipated vacation. Upon our Labor Day weekend arrival, the lake was a buzz with water activities. It was fun to watch from both the stone patio and the lovely screened porch at water's edge while still being able to enjoy the calm waters of the cove. Facing west, sunset from the porch was always our favorite time of day. After that, the hammock was the venue of choice for stargazing into the black night sky. Accommodations were perfect. There are two bedrooms and a bath on the first floor with the master suite and bath on the second. We barely used the dining and living rooms but enjoyed looking at the many antiques and original artwork. The kitchen was as well equipped as my own at home although most of the meals were prepared on the gas grill and enjoyed on the porch overlooking the lake. The house was equipped with lots of water toys, rafts, noodles, etc. for swimming fun for both children and adults. The lake water was clear and a wonderful yet a refreshing temperature. The canoe provided a peaceful tour of the cove and neighboring properties. Our vacation was thoughly enjoyed especially due to our lovely accommodations. I would make one recommendation to the owners and that would be to add some additional chairs and lounges for outdoor seating and sunbathing comfort. Without any hesitation, I highly recommend this lovely property for a very special time!Recommended for: Girls getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, families with teenagers.
Owner response: I became good friends over the phone with the person handling the rental for this family. We even traded names of some unrelated resources in the process. Although we have not in person, we plan to in the future. Getting to know the people who are interested in possibly renting our vacation cottage helps me determine if their expectations can be met by our location, amenities, sleeping accommodations and overall comfort. It is more important that I meet or exceed people’s expectations than to just rent the cottage. It makes the relationship comfortable enough to share suggestions on improvements like Jane did in her review. Every year we plan for additions and improvements. Waterfront lounges, side tables and several other additions will be part of this winters efforts to upgrade our vacation cottage for our guests and ourselves.

We just returned from an amazing 3 days at the Allen Cottage on Lake Burton. We have two children ages 7 and 8 and we all had a ball. We rented a boat and went tubing, fished off the dock at the cottage, had dinner at the boat marina, went on a local hike and visited the town of Clayton. The house is in the perfect location and has the best lake access. The walk to the lake is less then 10 giant steps no hill or steps. We took our grandparent and they sat on the screened in porch and just loved the view of the lake. The house is very comfortable and clean. Thank you for the perfect weekend. We will be back soon.Recommended for: Girls getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Our several phone conversations help match the needs of this family with our Lake Cottage and to confirm that their expectations could be met for " the perfect weekend". Oh yes, the weather also cooperated. Lovely people who took very good care of the Cottage and we look forward to their return.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1982
About the owner: My background is in architecture, graphic design and marketing services. I am semi-retired but still consult. My wife Keri was once an active partner and ran our Interior Design Studio but now writes and teaches in full time ministry. Our firm helped shape many landmark projects mostly here in the Southeast but also in other major markets within the United States and a few here and there in Europe and the Middle East. Our cottage is not a reflection of our commercial real estate work but more a reflection of our desire to have a comfortable yet tasteful and simple place for relaxation and...a place for the kids to play and enjoy themselves while they make memories for later... and happily we get to watch. I love to draw and paint so if you stay at the cottage you will find several originals on the walls. Most of which are of Lake Burton and the beautiful mahogany boats that live here.
Why the Owner Chose Lake Burton:
Lake Burton is one of the most beautiful lakes in the region. The water is clear and the water level hasn't varied 6' all summer.
On first sight Lake Burton reminded me of the lakes in the Ozarks where I used to fish with my Grandpa more than a half century ago. My grandchildren and now my Great-grandson are set to have a lifetime of memories too.
We just started sharing our cottage in 2006 when we listed it with VRBO but we have owned it for over 30 years. With the most recent renovation completed in the summer of 2006, it remains our family's favorite place in the world.
We have been fortunate to share our cottage with some of the most wonderful people and by the way they take care of our cottage I assume they must love it as much as we do.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
After our first two years at Lake Burton we looked all over the lake trying to find just the right house and location. After two years of looking we decided we already had everything we were looking for. So we decided to renovate, expand and stay where we were. We made it fit our family. We had an almost flat piece property safely tucked back in a cove with a wonderful view. We found out the combination was hard to find on Lake Burton.
Our location is close to Atlanta and only a 15 minute drive from Clayton. The Free boat ramp provided by Georgia Power is just a short walk from the cottage. And... most importantly we are tucked away and distant from major boat and the water ski traffic.
