Private Homes house description
'Sansei Hale' (Third Generation House) was built in 2005. It is a luxury vacation rental home overlooking the beautiful private Waikomo Stream as it meets the ocean in Turtle Cove, Poipu. It has three bedrooms (2 kings and 1 twin set) and three full bathrooms in a stunning, private setting. Both king beds are 'Select-Comfort Dual Control.' All bedrooms, living and dining have remote controlled AC units and ceiling fans throughout. The home has easy ground access to the large downstairs area that encompasses one bedroom/bath, living room, kitchen, dining area, and a spacious covered lanai with ocean and river views. Barbecue on the lanai, watch the stream roll into the Pacific Ocean, and enjoy the starry nights while falling asleep to the wonderful sounds of the stream and ocean.
The fully-equipped kitchen features granite countertops, with a center island and bar stools. The dining area, which seats six, is open to a living room featuring an entertainment center, 42' flat screen TV with TIVO, DVD player, and CD sound system. Slate floors and island-style furnishings complement the setting. The grounds are lush with tropical flowers and trees and cooled by the ocean trade winds. Steps take you to the stream below and to Turtle Cove, true to its name each evening.
The second floor has an ocean viewing deck, 2 bedrooms/2 baths and a bonus room with a queen sofa bed. The cathedral-ceiling bonus room also has a wet bar with mini-refrigerator and microwave. The entire home can accommodate seven people, with two king-size beds, two twins, and a sofa sleeper. The sleeping areas allow for space, comfort, and privacy for a wonderful island experience for couples and/or the entire family.
World famous Poipu Beach Park, the National Botanical Gardens and Spouting Horn are about a mile down the coast. Baby Beach is one block away. Koloa Landing, an excellent snorkeling and shore scuba diving spot, is just off the shore of the river mouth which is adjacent to the house. It is also known as Turtle Cove as turtles gather there throughout the year as their sleeping spot. Tennis, Golf (including Poipu Bay, home of the PGA Grand Slam), and excellent surfing are within minutes. Fine dining abounds, ranging from elegant to casual, garden settings to oceanfront.
We hope you come to visit our Sansei Hale and experience the local Hawaiian island escape.

Sansei Hale was the perfect spot for a perfect vacation. We spent a week there with another couple and what a wonderful time we all had. The two master suites, upstairs and downstairs, gave us plenty of space and privacy and the kitchen was so well equipped and roomy enough for all to pitch in. The house is decorated so beautifully. The colors inside and out are breathtaking and the view from the decks is amazing. It rained on and off but that only added to our fun. Kauai is gorgeous whether it's sunny or rainy.

Manager response: Thank you for sharing your comments with us! It is truly helpful when guests describe some of the amenities that are not obvious in photos---like space and privacy. Also, we just reupholstered the living room furniture and are thrilled that you noticed and complimented us on the happy colors!! Mahalo for your comments of warm aloha!!
My family of 7 (5 teenagers) enjoyed Paradise at Sansei Hale in Late July 2013. We stayed a week and simply had to tear ourselves away when it was time to leave. The views from the master bedroom are spectacular, as well as views from the family room, and decks. To our family, the stream and cove were truly fantastic! We went out ever night to the cove to watch the turtles, sit on the rocks and take in the view. Such paradise! There's a great deal of information in the previous reviews so I will not re-cap but I do recommend reading them should you decide to visit Sansai Hale as there's many great recommendations here. I hope to return again to this Paradise! While the pictures are excellent, they simply do not do this wonderful home justice! Our stay was perfect. The home is well apportioned, very well laid out, and has all of the comforts of home. We felt blessed to be there. We hope you enjoy it as well. Scott

Manager response: Dear Scott, Thank you so much for taking the time to do a review on Sansei Hale. You comments are so valuable in conveying the warmth & aloha that is very much a part of the home --- and it is far more than we can share in photos on our website. Mahalo for your kind words and lovely memories of your stay at Sansei Hale. We hope you will return again to make more island memories. Aloha!
Our stay in Kauai and Sansei Hale was both adventurous and relaxing. We along with another family enjoyed 9 fabulous days and nights in this well designed home located in a spectacular setting. The house was everything as advertised; very spacious and very clean. The cascading stream behind the home leading to turtle cove made for a nice sleeping aid as well as a spectaular backdrop for many family photos. The home itself is thoughtfully designed to accomadate both adults and children with the bedrooms spread out to provide everyone with privacy. The view of the ocean from the upstairs master balcony is breath taking. The kitchen offers all the ammentities and the appliances are all new and very functional. This home simply makes you feel AT HOME (excpet you're actually in one of the prettiest places on earth)! Comfortable beds, A/C, ceiling fans, flat screen TV's and a washer and dryer for light packers! The shopping center located just a few hundred yards (short 5 minute walk) offers a wide variety of shopping and restaurants. Our kids enjoyed the short walk each evening for some Lappert's ice cream and shave ice. Pizzetta's in nearby Koloa Town is a fun family Italian restaurant that also serves terrific seafood (try the Ono Piccatta). The Beachhouse restaurant, just a 3 minute drive, did not disappoint. Take a camera with you for some great photo ops before you sit down to eat. Keoki's down the street is also recommended. We however, found more enjoyment in having dinner at Sansei Hale and eating our meals out on the lanai listening to the peaceful stream. The beaches in Poipu are all scenic and close by. We especially like Shipwreck's beach over by the Hyatt. We also spent a few beach days by the Sheraton (a 5 minute drive) but this beach is small and tends to get crowded on weekends. To visit Kauai and not venture out to see some of the islands' and worlds' most scenic beaches would be a mistake in my opinion. Must see beaches are Tunnels beach (great snorkeling) over past Hanalei and Secret's beach also on the north shore (before you get to Princeville). But without a doubt my favorite beach is Polihale beach on the western side of the island past Waimea and the missle base. The water and the views of the nearby NaPali Coast are stunning! Better to visit in summer (safer). Catain Andy's NaPali Coast excursion is a must! Do the full day trip and request Captain Matt for your trip. We've done this trip 3 times. Spectacular!

Being that you are a frequent visitor to Kauai, your comments are especially helpful to our readers because you mentioned the great places to enjoy,..beyond the usual tourist spots. You have shared some of the hidden gems of Kauai! We also appreciate your positive comments about Sansei Hale, the level of accomodations, and the true Kauai experience that our home and location offers. We love it for that reason, and it is heartwarming to know that others find the same aloha at Sansei Hale. Mahalo from our family to yours! .
Sensei Hale- fabulous home in a fabulous location
Sensei Hale- fabulous home in a fabulous location
Our family came from Vancouver and Toronto, Canada to be together for Christmas and New Years. Most of our time was spent here on the South Beach. This home is a lovely retreat- walking distance to several lovely beaches, and a short drive to many more. e enjoyed the snorkeling at Lawa'i Beach- next to the Beach House restaurant. We even swam with a sea turtle. The house is situated on a lovely stream and we were able to watch the sea turtles come in to rest every night from a spot at the end of the road .There is a great barbecue on the lanai and we enjoyed many dinners listening to the water and enjoying the flood lit view at night. Beds are all super comfy and kitchen is well equipped. House is large enough for all guests to have privacy and not feel cramped. Has a/c which wouldn't be needed except at night, as we recommend closing the windows, to lessen the noise of the roosters crowing at all hours! (And I thought that they only crowed at dawn- was I wrong! ) Some must do's- snorkeling at Lawa'i Beach, ice cream at Lafferty's, fish tacos from Da Cracks, Waimea canyon, Napali coast either by catamarans or helicopter. If the surf is high, helicopter is your only choice. The Taro chips at Hanapepe, as well as the art shops there. All in all a fabulous spot. Only thing missing is an IPod dock. Would definitely recommend this home.

Manager response: Thank you so much for taking the time to do a review on Sansei Hale in Poipu. We are so pleased that you had an enjoyable family reunion on the island and at our home. Ahh yes, the lights on the stream at night...a touch of quiet, calm, magical Kauai. And then the roosters...we,too, close the doors on the roosters at night and use the AC!! We are delighted that you took home good memories. Mahalo!
It was the first visit to Kauai for all 6 of us and while the island itself is beautiful, staying at Sansei Hale made it an unforgettable vacation. The photos alone do not do it justice; you need to see for yourself the spectacular view from the lanai and hear the sounds of the stream, birds, and roosters (yes, you will come to love them). The location is perfect. We visited the sea turtles daily, enjoyed nearby Baby Beach, Spouting Horn, and quick drives to Koloa Town. Although very near a new shopping center and the Poipu resort area, when you are in the house it feels like you are in a serene non-commercial tropical setting. The house itself is very clean, large, and nicely decorated. Each bedroom is situated to give maximum privacy to the occupants. The 2nd floor area is quite spacious. I love the story of the history of the property posted on the wall...be sure to read it...very interesting! Oh, and I don't want to forget to mention the avocados (huge), mangoes (delicious), pomelos (gigantic), starfruit and bananas growing in the yard. If this sounds like paradise...it is!!!

Manager response: Thank you for your wonderful review. We are so glad that Sansei Hale provided the accomodations that worked well for your group....and that you enjoyed reading about the colorful history of our home. We particularly appreciate the observation that we are a quaint little slice of old/new Hawaii within the midst of lovely Poipu resort area. I had forgotten the goodies in the yard this time of year! Yes, YUMMY!!!!! Much aloha!
This was the best VRBO experience we've had. The house is absolutely fabulous. The sound of the creek running over the rocks was soothing & peaceful. We ate all our meals on the large table outdoors on the lanai. The view from the balcony in the upstairs master bedroom is wonderful. The house had many extras. Be sure to read the history of the house which is framed and hung on the wall of the upstairs bonus room.

Once again Frank and I want to thank you for making your lovely home in Kauai for us to rent-through your generous donation to the Knights. We had a super time with our family celebrating the high school graduation of a very special grandaughter who"ll be at San Jose State this fall. We all loved our time in your place. It felt like home--so comfy--so beautifully decorated and set up perfectly for our family. What great memories AND we found and loved Baby Beach! All the best...Vi & Frank

About: Aloha from Garen and Susan McCune, owners of Sansei Hale! Sansei Hale, is our Hawaiiana HOME where you will relax—enjoy the privacy of the stream AND the ocean, watch the fish and rare birds in the stream just below the deck, see the turtles in the cove, and soak up the genuine aloha that is truly Kauai. Susan was born and raised on this very spot, surrounded by avocados, mangos, bananas, star fruit, pamello—all of which are still here. Susan’s playground was Baby Beach, Kukuiula Landing, Poipu Beach and Koloa Town…also all still here! Garen, the consummate adventurer, knows the island’s hiking, diving, exploring. Both of us would love to share our wealth of information to enhance your Kauai experience. GLM Custom Homes is the McCune family business in Granite Bay, CA. A custom home builder of 30 years, Garen designed and constructed Sansei Hale on our Miyahara family property in 2005. The McCune children, Jason and Tricia, celebrated both their weddings at Sansei Hale, overlooking Waikomo Stream and Turtle Cove. Several guests to our home have also chosen our home to celebrate their own weddings and anniversaries. “Sansei is the number 3 in Japanese, and “hale” means “home” in Hawaiian. Susan is the third generation of Hawaii’s Japanese immigrants that settled in Koloa Town…hence, with honor and love we call our home, Sansei Hale, “third generation home.” Today, a blended family of Hapas (racially mixed), we embrace our cosmopolitan/Hawaiian heritage, particularly our Kauai culture. With warm aloha, we welcome you to share our piece of paradise and call it “home” too as you enjoy the truly local experience of Sansei Hale. Once you do, we hope you will return again and again as many of our guests do! Come share our island paradise!
