Beach walking, shrimp, and frolicking with your pets on the beach are great during our mild winter, glorious Spring Break and Summer.
Spring and Fall a best for the screened sleeping porches.
Sleeps 10
Our 'Dune House' is a 2-story, PET FRIENDLY, Creole design with two 40ft south facing 1st and 2nd story screened porches facing the dune and one 40ft covered front porch. One of our sleeping porch photos was chosen by WebShots as the Featured Photo of the Day in August 2008.
Alton Brown of Food Network and Good Eats dropped by to visit at Dune house while appearing in 'Seafood, Science and Celebrity' in March of 2011.
The home is designed for year round living on a rare barrier island. Directly abutting the grand mother dune the property is waterfront with a 300 yard dune and beach buffer before the emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico. This designated natural section of dune and beach are part of an area the (DIPOA) Property Owners Association plans to never allow to be developed.
Just to the east and accessible over the dune or a stroll along Orleans Dr is the Isle Dauphine Golf Club, a links style 18 hole gulf-front golf course which is great for walking.

SUMMER 2011 on DAUPHIN ISLAND FILLED UP FAST so Book Early for 2012
-------------- -------------------- --------------------
Not your usual Dauphin Island rental home. The location and setting is more like an Hilton Head or Edisto Island cottage. The 'Dune House's' setting is more lush with maritime pine forest on the east and west. Rare flora, fauna and birds are found along the mother dune to the south. The Isle Dauphine Golf Club is less than 300 yds from the front door with restaurant, pool, tennis, golf and beach amenities.
There are no roads between the home and the beach, just virgin dune and coastal vegetation. Sleep on the screened porches and harken back to the rhythms of the old south. Harken back to when one experienced the rhythms of nature, awakening to the myriad bird calls of this slice of paradise named the 'Birdiest Small Town In America'. In the evening sit on the porch or top the dune with a beach blanket to watch the sunset and wait for the stars to sprinkle across the sky. A naturally relaxing and invigorating experience awaits the family. Bring iPhone or the Droid star field app to really appreciate our starlit sky's.
-------------- -------------------- --------------------
Our cottage is located on the south side/Gulfside of the island, on two levels and within steps of the dune line. The decor is island eclectic with Gulf inspired colors, large flat screen TV in the living room and dvd units in each bedroom.
A charging station iPod adaptor is provided.
'Dune House' is a non-smoking, PET FRIENDLY home. You can enjoy many hours of sunbathing and playing on the beautiful sands of the Gulf of Mexico, or playing some sand volleyball while staying at our home. Come and enjoy the pristine white sand that we are famous for underneath your feet. There is a community pool located at the Isle Dauphine golf course and daily and weekly privileges are available at a reasonable rate.
Take the NEWLY paved island long bike path to the fishing pier, West End jet ski rentals, ice cream/pizza , seafood shops and restaurants, the marina, deep sea fishing, boat rental, small plane airport, golf course, tour the historic fort or The Estuarium or just sightseeing.
-------------- -------------------- --------------------
No traffic on the beach side of this home, just sand between you and the beach. No traffic jams and no traffic lights on this quaint & unknown fishing village on the Gulf of Mexico. We also offer porch, yard and beach seating for your family plus a charcoal grill. Several delicious seafood restaurants are available along with pizza or you can always cook at home in this kitchen outfitted for the home cook by the owners who are 'Food Network' producers of series such as 'Good Eats' and 'Feasting On Waves' with Alton Brown and 'Cooking Thin'.
Visit the Gulf Front Audubon bird santuary for a closeup visit with the resident alligator.
Prior owners included a Judge (who built the home), an artist whose work still graces the home and the current owners who are a TV producer/director of photography for Food Network series and island Realtor.
Linens/towels are provided for your convenience. In nearby Mobile are varied shopping and restaurant venues, a Fresh Market and other historic activities.
If in the Mobile area because of relocating for Thyssen Krump or EADS/Airbus you have no better base for exploring the area.
Electronics: Alarm Clock, Big Screen TV (HD), Cable TV, CD Player, DVD Player, Home Theater, Internet Access, WiFi, Stereo, Telephone, TV, VCR
Transportation: Parking room for most boats, island shuttle passes home.
Other: Local community pool available with daily or weekly fee. Public golf available at the Gulf front Isle Dauphine Golf Club.

My wife and Kids and I, along with My wife's sister and her family stayed at the Dune house, and loved it. It is much bigger than the pictures show! There is room for everyone to spread out, relax, and enjoy a beach vacation. We all loved Dauphin Island because of the "small town feel". Everyone there was friendly. We even got some Speckled Trout from a man that was cleaning them at the marina right after he caught them. The kids all loved the beach and the nice pool right down the street. I would recommend this house to anyone. It's absolutely wonderful!! The only downside was that it's quite a hike to the beach, but it's a great tradeoff for stargazing at night on top of the dune. This is the type of place where memories are made and never forgotten. I can't say enough how much we enjoyed staying here!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, pet owners, families with young children.
Owner response: We are so glad you had fun at our "Dune House"! It seems you came to dauphin Island for all the "right" reasons, relaxation, to get away, family time, seafood and pool time. Gene, at the Isle Dauphine Cabana pool, said he enjoyed having you stop in. I hope you can come back to our "paradise" very soon!. Marion

On 6/4/10 we brought 9 family members together for a week who have not spent more than a holiday meal as a group in nearly 20 years. Ages ranged from 5 to 67, and every one of us was able to do the things we wanted. The house is laid out perfectly to allow everyone to sit together for meals or games, but also to allow anyone to find a quiet corner (or hammock) for alone time. Sunsets on the dunes are beautiful, and the Isle Dauphine Golf Club just up the street is a wonderful architectural relic of the 50s with a round saltwater swimming pool that served us just fine while the tar balls washed up on the beach. The grill at the pool serves great fried pickles, too! The house has all the modern amenities without losing the rustic feel. It is not a sterile beach house like those you'd find at Gulf Shores or Destin (not that I mind those either!). This place makes you feel like you're in a neighborhood and part of the local color. Members of our clan took advantage of many of the interesting activities around Mobile and the Alabama Gulf coast, including the Gardens, Alligator Alley, Fort Gaines and a ferry ride to Fort Morgan, Alligator Alley, the USS Alabama, and the Aeronautic museum in Pensacola. The walk to the beach through the dunes is long when it's 94 degrees and 150% humidity, but really neat if you're into the flora and fauna of the island. The beach you get to is actually on the bay, but the sand spit is a few hundred feet across the water from you and the public beach on the gulf is maybe 1/4 mile to the right. The public beach is lovely and takes about 2 minutes to reach by car, but if we'd gone when it was a little cooler that would have been a great walk. Strongly recommend taking multiple vehicles for large groups so folks can go their own ways. The house has the best-equipped kitchen I've ever expereinced at a rental, and books galore. The upstairs bathrooms are renovated and have the biggest soaking tubs I've ever seen. My 5 year old was able to practice the flutter kick in ours! Drawbacks (from my perspective) were few. There are beds for 12 people all sleeping with someone else - one is a fold out couch in the loft indoors, and one is on the sleeping porch. It was a little hard to nail down heat settings on the glass-top range, and the mother dune blocks the breeze. However, there are LOTS of fans and we were never uncomfortable in the house or on the porches. We hope to return someday!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, pet owners, girls getaway.
Owner response: Melinda, thank you for the great review and suggestions for activities! The glasstop cooktop has been replaces and there is also a new washer & dryer. I have added Queen trundle to the second upstairs master, added a bunkbed to the downstairs bedroom and a large flatscreen to the kids room downstairs. The kitchen has been reconfigured with more room and a satellite island/cutting board with seating for 4 in the kitchen. A coffee grinder was added as well. The dining area seats 12 comfortably and a separate game table is set up. Not sure if the Dish HD was in place when you came but that is also active with a DVR. Hope you can come back in 2012! Marion

I can sit on the back porch all day! It's so quiet and peaceful, and walking distance to the stores, golf course and restaurants. Dune House is very spacious and comfortable with a fabulous gourmet kitchen. A couple of pounds of Skinner's fresh-off-the-boat shrimp, a bottle of wine, what more could you want?Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 5/6

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: I wear multiple hats on the island including working with Buyers and Sellers as a Realtor with ACP Real Estate. A specialist in buying/selling coastal real estate, building from the ground up as I have with several of my homes, modular/system construction, a earth centric and green guided focus, I love combining my love for Dauphin Island with a desire to protect and guide it's inevitable growth with initiatives which preserve it's rare lifestyle and mix of socio-economic residents. During the BP oil spill I was appointed by the Alabama Governor as 1 of 6 Commissioners on the Alabama Coastal Development Commission and served as a founding member of the regions Tourism Development Council to represent both Dauphin Island and Bayou La Batre. Other businesses I am involved with add to the opportunities to spread the word about Dauphin Island nationally to other folks who can appreciate it's laid back, lost in time, fishing village/1960's beach village vibe. One of these other businesses is ideaWercs, inc. (which can be found on YouTube) which keeps me in the entertainment business furnishing the Producer and Director of Photography to the hit Food Network series 'Good Eats'.
Why the Owner Chose Dauphin Island:
What do we want in a beach vacation?
We want a non-commercial, uncrowded beach, local seafood, historic connection, moderately easy access and nice folks.
These requirements and so much more were found on Dauphin Island.
DI has no chain restaurants, miles of uncrowded and many times deserted beaches, local shrimpers who live on the island, Fort Gaines, and easy 5.5 mile drive from Atlanta with only 30 minutes non-interstate, plus some of the nicest folks you will find anywhere living on the island. We love the diverse terrain on the island, the pet friendly beaches and the designation as the MOST BIRDIEST SMALL TOWN IN AMERICA for 3 years running!
The island has some of the most reasonable rental prices of any Gulf of Mexico beachtown plus being so easy to travel to.
Also, for great seafood, just next door is the Seafood Capital of Alabama, Bayou La Batre, the location of 'Big Shrimpin' '.
So, as you can see Dauphin Island is our idea of Paradise.
We call it an ex-pats escape inside the USA. Come check us out!
