2nd time around...

Guest: Italgirl (Petaluma)
Date of Stay: 03/22/12 Review Submitted: 03/26/12

This was our second visit to this wonderful cottage. We have officially decided we will return each year until we can buy our own place and become neighbors! You will have everything you need and then some. The views and sunsets from the deck will keep glued to your perfect seat - you'll forget about the TV and everything else! We watched a pod of whales heading north on our first night. The cottage is ideally located for hiking, beach combing and very fine dining. That is if you can force yourself to leave! Tom and Susan are there if you need them but otherwise you'd never really know that the owners are right next door. They've pretty much thought of everything you might need. The photos really don't do this magical little place justice. Go and experience it for yourself - you'll love it! (Queenies for breakfast is worth drive - and St. Orres for dinner is a not to be missed high end fabulous dining adventure.)

Owner response:Hi you two, We certainly smile when guests love this area and our cottage. We feel the same way, leaving this area to go anywhere is trying and returning is such a joy. We do hope you choose to return, your words speak to that desire. Cheers, Tom and Susan

Another peaceful week

Another peaceful week at your place here. We hiked a couple of trails around the Pt. Arena lighthouse...We also stopped by the Fort Bragg Whale Festival and tasted some yummy chowders... The little cottage here was wonderful - whale watching, saw some deer...and an osprey landed in the tree out front with a 5-inch fish to eat! Can't wait to see what next year brings! Thank you!

Our Spring Break Tradition!

Guest: Matthew E. (Southern california)
Date of Stay: 03/17/12 Review Submitted: 05/04/12

This was our second stay at the Ocean cottage and it was even better than the first. It is big enough so that you can stay a week with all of your stuff and not feel crowded, yet small enough to be cozy. It has all the amenities you need to cook, read, relax and watch the ocean. The town of Gualala is close enough that it is convenient to get groceries (there are TWO grocery stores; a gourmet and regular), but the cottage is located so that you can enjoy the privacy and solitude. There is also a lot of great hiking and birdwatching within a half an hour north or south of the cottage. We hope to stay here next spring break!

Fabulous!

Guest: Theresa and Rodge
Date of Stay: 03/05/12 Review Submitted: 03/31/12

Tom and Susan, As we read through everyone's comments, I kept seeing the word "wonderful", but for me and Rodge FABULOUS better describes the cottage and our stay here. We could not get enough of the ocean view from the hot tub or the deck and we were constantly in or on both! Everything we needed was here. We used the time to escape and reconnect with each other. Staying at your cottage has done more than we anticipated. Fresh air, waves crashing on the rocks..added up to Paradise...!

Tom and Susan, We thought we couldn't find an affordable oceanfront retreat...so lucky to find your cottage! It was everything we could have wanted and more! So close to the beaches - we went to Bowling Ball Beach and had such a great time. Coming "home" to the cottage and having a glass of wine on the deck overlooking the ocean was magical! We loved the art supplies and did a lot of work while we were here. Thank you!

The Edge of the WORLD

Guest: TOOTHY (Martinez CA)
Date of Stay: 11/28/11 Review Submitted: 12/01/11

Closest place to Heaven on Earth I've ever been. If you love the ocean, this is the place to stay! The cottage is immaculate.....modern and comfortable. My husband, dog, and I never wanted to leave the cottage, and we did not have to because of the full kitchen. Tom the owner was very laid back and enjoyed sharing his slice of heaven with us. We woke up the first night unable to sleep from excitement..we were like two KIDS! ...At night we would slip down to the hot tub....under a blanket of stars...The hot tub is positioned so you look out on the ocean like an endless pool....The moonlight shining off the waves was like a dream.....The cottage is stocked with all sorts of art supplies....in that environment the creative juices flow!! Please take my word...this cottage is MAGICAL inside and out. We will be back ASAP!!!! I'm sad to be home....WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!

Owner response:Your smiles from ear to ear while we talked warmed every piece of why we share this lovely place. Thank you for sharing your emotions both here on the website but also in our guest book. And, those personalized dolls you left for us are soooooo cool. They now live in a family rocking chair in our house. See you soon, we hope. Tom and Susan

A weekend in paradise...

Guest: Emily B. (Sacramento, CA)
Date of Stay: 09/24/11 Review Submitted: 09/28/11

My boyfriend and I just spent a relaxing weekend at the Ocean Cottage to celebrate my birthday. It was everything promised and more. We sat on the balcony for hours admiring the crashing waves through the trees, watched shooting stars from the hot tub, and played fetch with our dog at the nearby off-leash beach. The rental is directly next door to the landlord's property, but Tom was a friendly and unobtrusive host. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a romantic, carefree retreat. We will definitely be back!

Owner response:Hi, Thank you for the wonderful review. We would want to stay in our own cottage after reading your words! Hope to see you again, Tom and Susan

Nice Cottage but....

Guest: Tom S.
Date of Stay: 08/15/11 Review Submitted: 08/20/11

Tom and Susan have a very nice cottage with lots of thoughtful touches. However there are a few important items left out from the listing. First the view from the deck of the ocean is great. However look to the left about 60 feet away to see the side of the owner's house. It is not secluded and in fact the cottage is the upstairs of a garage. Second the picture showing the chairs on the deck is a real picture. However it was taken from inside the building to make the deck look big. In fact the deck is a walkway approximately 3' wide. If one person is sitting in a chair, he has to stand up to allow someone to pass by- it's tight. Third there isn't any ocean access within an easy walk. The oceanfront land is all private and posted so you can't get closer than the road. We felt these items should have been mentioned by the owner. Finally (and this is not a fault of the property or owners) Gualala is a long trip to any tourist stops like Sonoma, Napa, SF etc. A trip to Napa and back is essentially a full day's drive (4 hrs each way with construction on 1) so this is not a spot to use as a home base for doing anything else in Northern California. Overall this is a great place to watch the ocean and the cabin is nice but remote. However we felt the listing should be more honest with the property's drawbacks.

Owner response:Tom and his wife had obviously not read our listing before booking. They seemed surprised that we were so far from San Francisco (2-1/2 hours) and his wife said she had hoped to make a day trip from Gualala to Monterey, which is clearly not practical given that Monterey is approximately 4-1/2 hours from Gualala! Clearly, our cottage was not in an area practical for them to stay and visit all that they hoped to in three days. To say that the cottage is not a place to stay when one wants to visit areas in Northern California is not accurate, but perhaps because these guests had not done their homework before coming to California they are unaware of that fact. Additionally, the guests wanted to cancel two of their three nights, in August, because they had not researched beforehand.. We immediately opened those two nights on our calendar in the hope that we might be able to rent them out so the guests would not be charged for them. Perhaps this added to their desire to write an inaccurate review Indeed, Tom’s wife told Tom that she intended to write a good review! In fact, let us quote from the review she left in our guestbook: “As a Hoosier the sight and sound of the ocean was amasing [sic.] We enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub w/ a bottle of local wine. It is a memory I will not soon forget. My husband and I had a wonderful time here. Thank you.” Our listing makes clear that our deck is small, but it is large enough for two normal-sized persons to sit outside and also contains a grill in the corner; it is not the size of a walkway and has not been complained about by any other guests. Anyone calling to ask us questions is provided accurate answers. We have never told our guests that we have immediate ocean access by foot; we have incredible ocean views, but the ocean is below the cliffs and therefore it is not accessible by foot. There is a beautiful beach about a mile away and another in the opposite direction about a mile and a half away; that has not been a problem for the large numbers of guests our cottage attracts. One need only to read our reviews to see that this has been the most negative review we have received out of hundreds.

That the Ocean Cottage is set in a spot of unmatched beauty, that its openness and free-flowing design prompts both creative and contemplative pursuits, that the place is wonderfully appointed and equipped to a "T" (did I mention spotlessly clean) are all testaments your guests have made many times. What we have found here is somehow an extension of the mesmerizing seascape and the remarkable hospitality you two, and many others we have met here, personify. The particularly engaging grocer at the Elk Market used the word "magical" when asked to describe the vibe in his village, mysteriously deserted at lunchtime the week after July 4th. "Sometime this afternoon, folks will show up and you won't be able to get close to the cash register." The place, he said is "magical". And so is the Ocean Cottage. Designed, stocked and managed by artists actively engaged in serious, gorgeous artworks, the cottage seems centered in a mysterious vortex of energy the land, sea and sky co-create. You have given your guests a perch on which the magic of these rocky coves can do what needs to be done in the lives of your guests. If we stop, look and listen and let the magic settle. Maybe that's it. The Cottage is a lookout point, a listening base. A place to breathe... Thanks for everything...

Date of Stay: 05/07/11 Review Submitted: 05/27/11

The view and amenities at this cottage are unmatched at this price. Dont even try to find a cheaper place. Has all the kitchen stuff you need, short of food of course. The bed was very comfortable and cozy. The hot tub is a little bit of a jaunt from the cottage door - not a big deal, it was just a bit chilly when we stayed. Balcony is private, and give you some great endless views. The owners are very accommodating. We had the chance to meet them, and they gave us some great tips to some local beaches, etc.

Owner response:Hi Jeremy and Jennifer, We certainly enjoyed meeting you and sharing our local knowledge. That is one of the pluses for our guests as we usually cross paths and share some stories. Thank you for the lovely review as well. Cheers, Tom and Susan

Wonderful, homey cabin perfect for a couples' getaway. Well-stocked with all the necessary provisions and a breathtaking view. Even surrounded by other homes, still felt very private and restful. Hosts added little extras like fresh flowers, champagne, DVDs, CDs, and a radio to make it feel like home; and also provided just about anything you may need to explore the coast (lots of information, binoculars, picnic gear, etc.) Good to also know that there are two grocery stores in Gualala for provisioning. Can't wait to go back!

Owner response:Thank you for writing a glowing review. We have lots of local information for all our guests and enjoy telling everyone little secrets about this area. We are thrilled you enjoyed your stay and look forward to your return. Cheers, Tom and Susan

Amazing Spot!

Guest: Italgirl (Petaluma)
Date of Stay: 03/24/11 Review Submitted: 03/27/11

Just returned from 3 nights at this wonderful cottage. The pictures can not do this magical little spot justice. The views from the cottage are wide and ever changing. Even a rainy weekend could not dampen the views - they were just in more shades of grey than one would think possible! The cottage itself is perfect for two people. The space is inviting and comfortable with everything you need. We made most of our meals in the fully equipped kitchen, sitting at the breakfast bar just staring out into the ocean. The bed is comfy with yet another spectacular view. The bathroom has everything you need and the outdoor hot tub was a wonderful way to start and finish the day - wonderful views... Tom and Susan have filled the space with great touches and provide lots of good information for enjoying the cottage and the area to the fullest. I never got the chance to meet them but it was nice to know they were only a phone call away if we needed anything. Our dog enjoyed his stay as well. He was thoughtfully provided his own towels for drying off and sheets that allowed him to get up on the furniture with us! The location of the cottage allows for great hiking and day trips to the north or south. If that's not your thing - there's lots to do and see in all the little towns up and down highway one from antiquing, to art studios, lighthouses to great restaurants. Try Pizzas and Cream in Gualala - very casual but truly great pizza! And if you want to do nothing but stay in and relax, I can't imagine a better place. The cottage is private and all the art supplies might just inspire your creativity. Or you could just sit and stare at the ocean - whatever you do, you are sure to enjoy your stay...

Owner response:Hi Italgirl, As you know already, I really appreciate the detailed notes you wrote in our guestbook and now here online. It is really special for Susan and me to know how much fun and relaxation guests have during their stay. It brings a smile to us as you have already booked the same time for 2012 ! See you then. Tom

Great place to watch the storms roll in

Guest: Matthew E. (Southern california)
Date of Stay: 03/18/11 Review Submitted: 03/28/11

This is a fantastic little cottage. We stayed for six nights and had a great time even though a couple of really rough storms blew in and we lost power one night. It was no big deal since the heat and stove are gas and Tom and Susan have provided a lantern and flashlights. We moved the partition so we could watch the sea and sky right from the bed. The kitchen is fully equipped. I really liked the mini oven/toaster/convection oven. Tom and Susan have also put a great book together with all sorts of local information about restaurants, parks, shops and instructions about how to find and operate things in the cottage. Tom was very helpful when the power went out and was a great source of information about local road conditions. The cottage is close to some great hiking including Gualala Regional Park and Salt Point State Park. We would have done more but the weather was a little rough. So we stayed in, drank tea, sat by the fireplace read and watched the storms roll in! We will make plans to stay here again.

Owner response:You two were 'treated' to one of the most powerful storms I have witnessed in my years here. Thank you for taking it all in stride. There are times when the locals that live up on the ridge and cannot see the storming ocean rent places with an ocean bluff view just to see the huge waves and horizontal rain. This series of storms was more powerful than usual and we are glad to see the sunshine arrive this week. Thank you for your lovely review and we hope to see you again. Cheers, Tom and Susan

Amazing weekend getaway

Guest: jabmad (Concord ca)
Date of Stay: 01/01/11 Review Submitted: 01/13/11

I recently had the opportunity to stay at the Cottage a few days to relax and recharge. The cottage itself was far beyond my expectations, there's nothing worse than staying somewhere that has been half cleaned, far from this place as it was spotless. The small attention to detail such as robes and other amenities make your stay feel like a luxurious, rustic home away from home. I was lucky enough to have the weather cooperate with me in the dead of winter, so the I was able to take in all of the ocean's breath taking views. Sadly I'm a California native and have never been up north to explore the coast, do yourself a favor and spend some time here! I will be back soon, thank you Tom and Susan for making it possible.

Owner response:Hi Jabari, Susan and I very much appreciate the wonderful and detailed review you posted for our cottage. We know time is precious so taking some time to write and post is something special. We do hope to see you in the future. I think we are about to experience a lovely sunset tonight as there are some clouds but also gorgeous sunshine; one never knows what to expect. Cheers, Tom and Susan

Thank you again for letting us stay in your lovely cottage ! After 14 months in Singapore~ what an incredible place to come home to ! The majority of this trip was spent exploring the beaches & coves to the north, including a long, empty & serene stroll down Manchester Beach. Arriving back at the cottage around sunset, taking in the views, a little wine, some dinner - you can't be more comfortable and at peace. We look forward to coming back up here again soon !

View from the deck is great, spent 3 days watching dolphins feeding and breaching right out front between the two trees. 11am at high tide seems to be their time. Saw 50 or more on Friday. We have rented many places on the coast but this has one of the better views. At 11:30 Sat. morning a whale was just offshore.

Your place has everything you need for a memorable short vacation. Hope to be back! Again thank you. P.S. We are glad our son told us about your place.

We've had a full week here and it seems like only an hour ago when I noted the halfway mark of the trip. The ocean is completely mesmerizing. Coming from land-locked Denver makes the contrast even greater. We have been struck by the lush gardens and abundance of wildflowers on the trails we've hiked. Hiking has been our primary activity, as far south as the Korturn Trail from Wright's Beach to the Saddle overlooking Goat Rock and as far north as the Mendocino Headlands. ......... Another highlight was getting to see 3 whales from the Point Arena lighthouse area. Thanks for all the delightful amenities within the cottage and the wealth of information provided. This is a beautiful spot and we are glad your are sharing it!

Thank you for sharing the peace and serenity of this place in so many ways: - a fully appointed "cottage" that would easily make a home, all in good order, every detail resolved from trash to cooking to beauty of art and photos - the additional hospitality of chilled wine to greet us - the clear directions and warm greeting on arrival, the availability throughout our stay to answer questions - including Dave the Dog and local birds in your care and feedings, and making room for other dogs for guests who have them - the willingness to share this beautiful, beautiful place and to do all the work and maintenance that makes that sharing possible Thank you again - we hope to come back ! Pam The ocean, the hawks, pelicans, and even whales one day - you certainly know how to make your guests feel so special ~ thank you for sharing the beautiful cottage and for making us feel so welcome and cared for. Marie

It is generous and good of you to share your lovely hideaway with perfect strangers - an act of trust which has obviously enriched the lives of hundreds of people. Thank you for everything - the birds and surf and blue skies, great and peaceful sleep (terrific mattress!) and your kindness & helpfulness in fixing the TV and telling us about the trails. We tried to notice everything - the fresh sweetpeas..... but i'm sure we missed some of the myriad tiny touches of art and care. Thank you again.

What an adorable retreat!! Everything the internet site says is true ... except that your actual place is better than the site photos & descriptions. Abraham, Oris, and I fit perfectly into your heaven. We especially loved the "off leash" beach at mm 3.10.... So many pluses to our stay here. The nest supplied everything a love female & her 2 male puppies could ask for. It was NICE to feel comfortable having 2 dogs. Thank you. Tom, thank you for your help explaining the controls of the TV. I felt I could ask you about anything almost and you really wouldn't mind. Thanks. Back to Davis.

Thank you for your hospitality. Your cabin is awesome and the view is magnificent. Thanks too for letting us know about the whales out there. (I offer guests the option of me calling them when I see whales spouting.) Had you not called us we would have missed that baby whale breeching. We definitely hope to return soon.

Awesome whale spotting! Sitting in the hot tub, the view is immense. While we spotted many spouts from the deck, it was in mid-afternoon when a whale decided to give us a good show and periscoped no less than 7 times right in front of us. Simply incredible! Ocean Bluff Cottage is my favorite place and I've rented all up the North Coast from Mendocino to Stinson. While I'd like to keep it secret, it just wouldn't be fair to Tom and Susan. This is more like an ocean loft than a studio, big and roomy. So grab your sweety, leave the kids at home and have a blast. This is truly a rare find!
