La Roche d'Enchaille is a barn conversion located between the medieval market towns of Ligueil and Descartes; ideally positioned for exploring the Loire Valley and its Châteaux. Set in to a hillside with a wood behind, La Roche d'Enchaille enjoys uninterrupted views of the surrounding rolling farmland and woodlands. The accommodation is a careful restoration and conversion of the farm to the Châteaux de Cussay, this dates back to 1268 when the first record of the châteaux can be traced as being sold to Guy the Doyen of St Martin. The main West-facing wall is formed from the original châteaux ramparts and vestiges of these are present through out the grounds as well as entrances to caves and tunnels. The locals swear there is a tunnel linking La Roche d’Enchaille with the Church in the centre of Cussay some 5 km away. The châteaux had several roles during its long history, including operating as a mint striking coinage back in the 16th century and more recently as a “Relais de Post'.

We stayed in this lovely property for 1 week in September 2011 with our 2 young children. The property was very comfortable, with everything we could possibly need thoughtfully considered by the owners. The property was immaculately clean and the location, amongst the fields, was idyllic. Our hosts Garth and Elizabeth made us all feel very welcome and we appreciated them being on hand to answer our questions about the local area. We found the local area very charming. We enjoyed many day trips to local villages and markets. We enjoyed our stay here and would love to return some time in the future.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

The gite is located in a really beautiful location that takes your breath away, if you're lucky you'll spot deer, owls and foxes in the fields that surround it. It is extremely well furnished and equipped- especially the kitchen including every sort of cooking utensil, pots and pans even down to French Country cook books!! There is a games room to keep the kids (whatever age happy) bikes to borrow, extremely fast internet connection. The owners really have gone the extra mile to make your stay as comfortable and homely as possible as well as stylish whilst keeping the old charm of the building - with beautiful old beams and windows. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful from the welcome basket of essentials such as bread, milk, coffee, tea etc, down to suggesting local markets, château's and good local restaurants. They have an adorable dog Buster who definitely deserves a mention as he welcomed us home everyday with a waggy tail and made us miss our dog slightly less. We have already booked to return in the spring and could not recommend La Roche d'Enchaille highly enough. Thank you Garth and Liz for a completely stress free week in your beautiful Gite looking forward to being back in 2012Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

We had the most amazing holiday at La Roche d'Enchaille. Having seen the photos on the website, we were expecting great things, but we couldn't quite believe how lovely everything was when we arrived: the house was spotless, the rooms were light, airy and beautifully decorated, and every detail had been thought of. Garth and Lizzy were really lovely and gave us lots of information about the local area and places to visit. We also fell in love with their dog, Buster, and our two-year-old daughter still talks about him now, almost three months after our holiday! The house was really geared up for children. When we arrived, there was a stair gate at the top of the stairs, and a beautiful cot made up in one of the rooms. Our daughter's eyes lit up when we walked onto the landing (more like a room in itself!) for the first time, as there was a wonderful children's area set up with books and toys, including a huge basket full of soft toys, which kept her amused for ages! Loches - about a 20 minute drive away - was a lovely town with shops, restaurants and its own chateau. Within a 30 - 50 minute drive there were loads of other places to visit, including the chateaux at Blois and Amboise. We also had a day in Tours and the shopping there was fantastic! We've spent lots of time in France and stayed in lots of different places, and this was by far the best. We had a lovely, lovely time and just can't wait to go back!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, families with young children, families with teenagers.

We rented this property for a month and had a wonderful time. The gite exceeded our expectations: it was spacious, comfortable, spotlessly clean, and well appointed with good attention to detail and style. We have prior experience of vacation rentals in England, Scotland, Italy and Spain, and this was the best. It is better than advertised and highly recommended. The owners, Garth and Liz, are expatriate Brits who are committed to building their own business in France. They are not hobbyists; they are professionals who genuinely want their customers to have a good experience, and actively seek feedback on how they can do even better. They are friendly, but not intrusive, and are always available to help in any way they can. We enjoyed getting to know them and hearing about their experience of living in France. The location, Cussay, is a good touring center. Most of the Loire Valley, from Blois to Angers, is easily drivable and we visited all the main attractions on a series of day-trips. The surrounding countryside is gorgeous and unspoiled with lots of interesting mediaeval towns, notably Loches. There are plenty of bars, cafes, and restaurants with good food at all price points, and the local people were both welcoming and tolerant of our bad French. We found the Thomas Cook guidebook “Drive Around the Loire Valley” to be very useful in planning our various excursions. There are convenient supermarkets in Ligueil and Descartes with a wide range of local produce and wine. We particularly enjoyed the Chinon and Bourgueil wines, and there is a good selection available at reasonable prices. Also in the Ligueil supermarket try the unpasteurized “Le p’tit Brignonnais” (Camembert-style) cheese made by “Fromagerie Maurice” and the “Chinon” pate. A highlight of our trip was the weekly pilgrimage to the Sunday morning market in Descartes. In addition to the usual range of fresh produce there were two vendors selling spit-roasted chickens and ducks, potatoes basted in chicken fat, paella, couscous and choucroute. One stall was set up at the top of the market square and the other one was part way down on the right hand side. Try the paella from the guy at the top and the potatoes, duck legs and couscous from the guy on the right. Whether you are an avid tourist, like us, or just want to hang out with the kids, go for walks and relax you will not be disappointed with this gite. We are seriously contemplating a return visit.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+, families with teenagers.

My friends and I spent an amazing week at this property in Sep 2010. We found the accommodation extremely spacious, clean, bright and totally relaxing, it was exactly what we were looking for. The game room and outside patios were an added bonus. Well have recommended the property to friends of ours and will no doubt be back. It was nice and quite, but not too far from various chateaus and a few different towns, a great location.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

A wonderful farmhouse. Beautifully renovated barn with lovely views of the countryside. Very central to lots of sweet villages and close to the chateaus. Great for kids with storybooks, soft toys and games room. Hosts were extra nice, with lots of little touches like fresh flowers and fresh bread. We absolutely loved staying at this property - it was spotless and beautifully renovated. Lots of space and gorgeous views all round. Loches was lovely and we had a few lovely drives to the chateaux. Garth his family were lovely and unobtrusive during our stay. Would highly recommend - perfect for couples, singles and families. Highly recommend and we would definitely stay here again should we revisit this part of France.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers.

It is winter in Birmingham - cold, damp, a sharp wind and even some snow with all the chaos that causes in the UK - as I think back to the wonderful holiday we had in La Roche d'Enchaille last August. We have spent the last six years holidaying in The Loire and we have stayed at some really excellent properties but La Roche has been the best. There was plenty of space for six adults - three good bedrooms - one ensuite - and a bathroom upstairs and a very large living area downstairs with excellent cooking facilities. The adjoining barn has been converted into a spacious sports area, with table tennis, darts and large screen TV. The weather was really hot but there are two sitting areas - with parasols - on each side of the property to catch the morning and evening sun. At the rear of the property we all enjoyed relaxing in the evening with a glass (or two) of wine and some food from the barbecue, and later enjoying the exceptional sunsets. Living in Birmingham we all much appreciated the peace and tranquillity. Garth and his family always seemed to be on hand to offer advice and help when we needed it and their friendly support was much appreciated. Loches is quite close and we always like going there but we also much enjoyed Ligueil - it is a typical small medieval town that grew on us during our stay. La Roche is just a little south of the main tourist area of The Loire but the distances and the traffic are not really a problem, especially compared with Birmingham. We would certainly recommend La Roche to friends, so much so that we intend to return ourselves in the future.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers.

This place is every bit as good as the web site says. It is beautifully restored in French country style, spotlessly clean and very spacious. The kitchen is fantastically well equipped and also has a gas bbq which we used every night bar one. The terrace faces west so we sat out every evening and watched the sun set- gorgeous. The immediate area is very rural which for us was great and the locals were very friendly and helpful. Only an hour to the big Loire chateaux though there are lots of smaller ones nearby. Great market in nearby Loches. Owners were really helpful and friendly and on hand but never intrusive. Recommend to anyone 10 out of 10.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

La Roche d'Enchaille turned out to be even lovelier than we had hoped from the information provided. Extremely spacious, sensitively restored and spotlessly clean, we very much enjoyed our week there in August. The owners were very discrete but always helpful when approached (gite is not overlooked at all). Our whole family (parents plus teenagers) made daily use of the table tennis table, boules pitch and bicycles (be sure to cycle to the boulangerie before 9 am if you want croissants though!). Great selection of books to read, including children's picture books. We entertained two other families for lunch very comfortably and were glad of the gas barbecue. Easy reach of two supermarkets and many delightful places such as Loches (medieval walled citadel) and of course the chateaux. Quite happy to stay put though, watching the sun set over the fields of sunflowers from the vantage point of the stone balcony. We would love to return and have already recommended the property to our friends.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers.
