Fuszhizome-an Machiya Residence Inn
The townhouse can accommodate up to 4 people, making it perfect for couples, families, and trips with a small group or friends.
The roof and latticed bay windows are the first images to catch the eye. The koshido or latticed door opens to unveil the miseniwa or entrance way, which leads to the hashiriniwa or long external hallway. The earthen floors that line the hallway connects the front entrance with the old Japanese style kitchen. The rooms of the machiya are divided into three areas- the misenoma, nakanoma, and okunoma. These rooms lead to the tsuboniwa or Japanese garden. Although compact in size, all of the attributes of a Kyoto machiya have been meticulously restored to make you feel as though you stepped back in time.
In the olden times, the misenoma was the area of the house, where guests were officially greeted. During those days, the machiya acted as both a workplace and home. This room was used for business transactions, hence the word mise means “store.” The wooden doors of the misenoma entranceway open to reveal the traditional Japanese ajiro or wickerwork ceiling, and Japanese alcove. Here you can enjoy the interplay of shadow and light from the world beyond the lattice door.
Daidokoro or kitchen:
The tori-niwa breezeway hallway and earthen floors recreate the design of a traditional kyoto machiya. In this hallway is the kitchen which utilizes components of a deconstructed Japanese-style chest of drawers. The Hibukuro or high ceiling of the kitchen once served as a chimney. The historic walls remind visitors of the soot stains that once lined the walls from the hot air and smoke that wafted from the kitchen. Now, rays of light penetrate from the high skylight windows stirring the imagination. To stay warm in the cold months, the earthen floors are fully equipped with a heating system for your comfort.
The nakanoma traditionally served as a kitchen, dining, and living room. Located in the heart of the home, it was the busiest room with members of the family arranging food on the tatami mats. The room has been restored to bring back memories of this simple, joyful time.
The okunoma is a quiet, serene area to relax. Natural light and a gentle breeze pour in from the adjacent tsuboniwa garden. The modern Japanese-style sofa makes the cozy okunoma a perfect place to reminisce over memories of your trip over a cup of hot green tea or coffee. In the back is a fully equipped bathroom with sink, toilet, washer, dryer, and bathtub overlooking the quaint tsuboniwa garden.
Second Floor Western Bedroom :
The high ceiling showcases the large and sturdy beam that has held up the house for years. The wooden floors have been lacquered using the fuku-urushi method, where lacquer is rubbed on to the wood, and excess urushi, or lacquer, is wiped off (fuku). This process is painstakingly repeated a number of times so that the natural wood grains stand out. Even in this small area, the traditional techniques of Japanese architecture that date back to ancient times are on full display. We have selected some of the finest bedding for the twin beds to make your stay as comfortable as possible. To create a larger space, simply open the door to the adjacent Japanese room. The view of the kitchen from the hibukuro or high ceiling is something that you can only experience at a genuine machiya.
