Mas de Cabrieres is a grand village house in an unspoilt Provence village - Cabrieres d'Avignon, 5 minutes from Gordes.
The house was built from the 16th century onwards by the wealthiest family in the village, which is reflected in the proportions of the rooms and the surprisingly large walled garden.
The style of the house is old Provencal, dating between the 1500s and 1700s, but very comfortable after a renovation in 1990.
There are 6 bedrooms, 4 in the main house and 2 in a second house across the garden. The house sleeps a maximum of 12. The bedrooms are a generous size and all have two single beds which can be brought together to make a 180cm-wide bed (6ft 6in).
DOWNSTAIRS: A living room with comfortable sofas around the fireplace and satellite TV, and through an arch the dining room. The kitchen is equipped with all the expected appliances: electric oven, 4 gas rings, dishwasher, fridge (plus second fridge and freezer in utility room), toaster, kettle, coffee machine. The hallway has a WC.
UPSTAIRS:
Very large master bedroom with en suite bathroom - bathtub and separate shower, 2 basins, WC.
Bedrooms 2, 3 and 4 share a bathroom facility consisting of large bathroom with bathtub, separate shower room, and separate WC.
SECOND HOUSE:
Two bedrooms, sharing a bathroom with shower, basin and WC.
OUTSIDE:
Outside the kitchen is a dining table and seating for 12 under the shade of a towering plane tree. The garden is beautifuly kept, with lawn and pool area, flower beds, an old olive tree. The garden is about 600 square metres (6400 sq ft).
The pool is 9m x 4m (30x13ft) and alarmed in line with French pool regulations. Pool towels are supplied.
THE LOCATION:
Cabrieres d'Avignon is a 'real', lived-in village, unspoilt, peaceful and quiet. The buildings are all in honey-coloured stone, and the village has a good restaurant, an excellent baker, a butcher and grocery store. All are within a 2-minute walk of the house.
The better known villages of the Luberon - Gordes, Menerbes, Bonnieux, Roussillon, Lacoste, Isle sur la Sorgue, Fontaine de Vaucluse, etc. - are within 15 minutes of Cabrieres. Avignon is 40 minutes away, and a little further are Aix en Provence, Nimes, Arles, St Remy, Marseille, and Orange. The Cote d'Azur is 2 hours away.
If you have not heard of the Luberon, you may have read about it in Peter Mayle's 'A Year in Provence', which he wrote in nearby Menerbes, or seen it in the Russell Crowe movie 'A Good Year', which was filmed all around here.
The Luberon natural park is on your doorstep, and this is great hiking and cycling country.
If you love food and wine, this is a terrific base for the markets that take place in a different village each day of the week, and for the vineyards all around where you can buy wine by the bottle or more.
